LHP Wei-Yin Chen, 31, was a bust last season after the Marlins signed him to a five-year, $80 million contract. He got his money, but he did not give the Marlins value in return. His 4.96 ERA was a career worst, and the same can be said for his five wins, his hits per nine innings (9.8) and his homers per nine innings (1.6). Chen threw his fastball at an average speed of 90.7 mph, which was also his career low. With four more years on his contract, the Marlins badly need him to throw with a bit more velocity and revert back to the form that saw him post a 16-6 record and a 3.54 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles in 2014.
Mon May 18 201520:30Bruce Chen: Announces Retirement
Chen announced his retirement via his personal Twitter on Monday.
After being designated for assignment by Cleveland over the weekend, Chen elected to hang up his cleats rather than attempt to catch on with another team. This marks the end of a career that spanned 17 seasons, over which he accumulated a 4.62 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 1,140 strikeouts in 1,532 innings.
Sat May 16 201516:35Chen designated for assignment Saturday by Indians
Chen was designated for assignment Saturday by the Indians.
Chen lasted just 2.1 innings in his second start for the Indians following a disappointing first outing, and that will be it for him in the majors at this point. At age 38, there's not much opportunity left at the major league level, but the veteran has the option to look elsewhere rather than accept an assignment to the minors.

Chen allowed three runs on seven hits over just 2.1 innings in his start Friday.
Chen hasn't done anything in his two starts to warrant a rotation spot once T.J. House returns from the DL and may get removed from the rotation even before House returns.
Wed May 13 201512:25Bruce Chen: Will Start On Friday
Chen will receive second start for the Indians on Friday against the Rangers, Paul Hoyes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group reports.
Chen was roughed up in his first start with the Indians, allowing six runs on 10 hits and a walk over just four innings last Saturday. However, the Indians are in desperation mode following the injury to T.J. House, and will send the veteran back out Saturday as he looks for a better outing the second time around.

Chen got rocked in his first start with the Indians on Saturday, coughing up six runs on 10 hits and a walk in just four innings, striking out three.
Torii Hunter greeted Chen with a solo home run in the second at-bat of the game, and it was downhill from there. The Indians haven't yet announced whether Chen will get a another chance in their rotation as they try to plug the hole left by TJ House's shoulder injury.

Chen was officially called up by the Indians in anticipation of his start against Minnesota on Saturday.
Anthony Swarzak was designated for assignment to make room for Chen, who earned a promotion by posting a 1.74 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 23:3 K:BB in five starts for Triple-A Columbus to begin the year. Last season with Kansas City, Chen was knocked around to the tune of a 7.45 ERA in 48.1 innings, but he figures to hold down a starting job at least until T.J. House (shoulder) returns if he's even serviceable at the back of the Cleveland rotation.
Wed May 6 201517:12Chen will be added to major league roster and get start Saturday...
Chen will be added to the major league roster and get the start Saturday against the Twins, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
With T.J. House on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, the Indians will turn to Chen after his brilliant start in the minors as he's posted a 1.74 ERA with a 23:3 K:BB walk ratio in five starts with Triple-A Columbus. The 38-year-old is not currently on the 40-man roster, so the club will need to make a corresponding move to make room for him by Saturday.
Tue May 5 201512:13Chen may be candidate to start Saturday's game against Twins
Chen may be a candidate to start Saturday's game against the Twins, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
With T.J. House (shoulder) on the disabled list, the Indians will likely turn to Chen, Shaun Marcum or Zach McAllister. Chen owns a 6.7 K/9 through five starts (31.0 innings) for Triple-A Columbus this season, but a sterling BB/9 mark (0.9/9) has helped him to a 2-1 record and 1.74 ERA.
Tue Mar 24 201519:26Chen informed Tuesday that he will not make Opening Day roster
Chen was informed Tuesday that he will not make the Opening Day roster, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.
He will be able to remain in big league camp with the team until spring training is over, and then he will presumably report to Triple-A, where he will serve as organizational rotation depth.

Chen allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in his start Saturday.
Chen is looking to land a spot at the back of the rotation this spring but has been outpitched by the other contenders to this point. He'll need a strong kick in the final weeks of spring if he wants to grab a spot in the rotation when the season starts.

Chen tossed a pair of hitless innings in his first appearance of the spring Thursday.
Chen's in camp looking to win the fifth starter spot in a competition that includes Zach McAllister, Josh Tomlin, Danny Salazar and T.J. House so he'll need to pitch himself into the rotation picture this spring.
Mon Feb 16 201522:46Chen agreed to minor league deal with Indians on Monday
Chen agreed to a minor league deal with the Indians on Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
Chen made seven starts for the Royals in 2014 and ended up on the mound in six other appearances. Finishing the year with an ERA of 7.45 on 48.1 innings pitched, the 37-year-old will likely struggle to see time in the majors during the 2015 campaign.
Fri Aug 29 201419:02Chen designated for assignment Friday
Chen was designated for assignment Friday.
Chen struggled in his last relief outing, allowing six earned runs in just one inning of work. The horrid inning raised his ERA to 7.45 on the season, a number that is too high to overlook at the major league level. He will now have to decide whether to accept his assignment or look for work with another club.
Sun Jul 27 201419:14Chen tagged for six runs in loss to Indians
Bruce Chen allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings in Sunday's loss to the Indians.
Chen took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning but proceeded to allow six runs over the next two-plus innings of work. Jason Vargas continues to inch closer to being activated, meaning Chen's days in the rotation are limited. He owns a 6.42 ERA and 1.67 WHIP on the year.

Wed Jul 23 201400:11Chen holds White Sox to one run in victory
Bruce Chen held the White Sox to one run over five innings in a win Tuesday.
Chen's only mistake was a home run by Adam Dunn, but the left-hander limited the Sox to four hits and no runs over the rest of his time on the mound. It was his first win since April 19 and just his second win overall. Chen has filled in admirably in Jason Vargas' absence, but with Vargas nearing a return Chen will soon fade back into fantasy irrelevance.

Tue Jun 24 201416:27Royals activate Bruce Chen from 60-day DL
Royals activated LHP Bruce Chen from the 60-day disabled list.
Chen has been out since late April because of a back injury and did not pitch well on his minor league rehab assignment. The left-hander carries no fantasy value and he might not be in the majors for very long.

Bruce Chen (back) is expected to need two more rehab starts before being activated from the disabled list.
Chen allowed two runs on eight hits over three innings in his first rehab outing with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday. He's being stretched out as a starter, but there's no guarantee he'll return as a member of the rotation.
