Sat Apr 2012:21Marlins Limiting Max Meyer's Workload
The Miami Marlins recently optioned No. 3 prospect Max Meyer to Triple-A Jacksonville despite the fact that he had been the team's most consistent starter three turns through the rotation to begin the year. But Meyer missed 19 months due to Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, so his workload in 2024 was always going to be monitored closely. The most innings he's thrown in his professional career was 111 three years ago. Manager Skip Schumaker said Meyer won't be shut down, but he'll pitch once a week in three-inning stints for Jacksonville so he can be available to the Fish in the second half of the season. "There's not an exact date or timeline," Schumaker said of Meyer's return. The 25-year-old has a bright future in the big leagues, but his ceiling is capped significantly for fantasy managers in 2024.

Mon Apr 1514:37Max Meyer Optioned To Minors
Miami Marlins pitcher Max Meyer was optioned to the minors before the team's matchup against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. With A.J. Puk (illness) being scratched from his start earlier in the day, the Marlins decided to call up Edward Cabrera to take his spot. However, his promotion has resulted in Miami sending down Meyer -- who has been the team's best pitcher in the early going. The right-hander has given up just four earned runs across 17 innings pitched (2.12 ERA) through three starts. He is also coming off the best outing of his career, allowing only one earned run across six strong innings against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. However, with the 25-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery, it appears the team is taking a careful approach with their young pitcher. Despite his option to the minors, he is a player you should be looking to stash in fantasy, given his upside.

Sat Mar 2312:13Max Meyer Makes Opening Day Roster
Miami Marlins right-hander Max Meyer has made the team's Opening Day roster and has the inside track to begin the season in the team's starting rotation as their fifth starter, according to a source. If Meyer is indeed in the rotation, he would likely make his first start on April 1 in an excellent matchup against the Los Angeles Angels. The 25-year-old earned a roster spot out of camp by throwing seven scoreless Grapefruit League innings with five strikeouts and only one walk in spring training. He's getting the opportunity with Eury Perez (elbow), Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) all starting the year on the shelf, so as soon as one of them is ready to make their 2024 debut, Meyer could be the one to get booted from Miami's rotation.

Sun Mar 1712:51Max Meyer An Option For Opening Day Rotation
Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said that he isn't ruling out right-hander Max Meyer for the team's Opening Day starting rotation given all the starting pitcher injuries in spring training. "I think everyone's on the table," Schumaker said. Bryan Hoeing, who was projected to be a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen, is also a candidate for the season-opening rotation. The 25-year-old Meyer was sent to minor-league camp earlier this week, but the Fish could call him back with Eury Perez (elbow), Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) all ailing with Opening Day coming up quickly in the rearview mirror. Meyer is the team's top pitching prospect and has thrown seven scoreless innings in Grapefruit League action, making him an intriguing stash candidate in deep-mixed leagues. However, his 2024 upside will be limited after he missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery.

Tue Mar 1216:26Marlins Option Max Meyer To Triple-A
The Miami Marlins optioned right-hander Max Meyer to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday. It's not what Meyers had hoped for, but the 25-year-old figures to be in the big-league starting rotation at some point in 2024. He looked good in spring training, throwing seven shutout innings, and the Fish could need him in April with both Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) dealing with arm injuries this spring. Meyer had Tommy John surgery early in 2022 after making his MLB debut, which forced him to miss all of last season. There's plenty of fantasy intrigue here if Meyer is healthy, including a potential relief role down the road if starting doesn't work out, but his fantasy ceiling will be limited in 2024 while he's on an innings limit.

Thu Feb 1522:45Max Meyer Expected To Be An Option To Start
Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said that right-hander Max Meyer (elbow) is expected to be an option to start in 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2022. The 24-year-old was ready to throw off a mound last July but did not pitch at all in 2023. He allowed five earned runs while walking two and striking out six in his first two major-league starts in 2022 before going under the knife. When healthy, Meyer should be yet another one of Miami's intriguing young starting arms. His fastball-slider combination has the potential to miss plenty of bats, so he's worth stashing in deep fantasy leagues to begin the season, even if he doesn't win a rotation job out of spring training. Given the fact that he missed all of last year, Meyer will most certainly be on a strict innings limit in his return to the big leagues.

Mon Jul 10 202309:44Max Meyer Throws Bullpen Session
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer (elbow) was able to throw a 15-pitch bullpen session last week. The 24-year-old is not expected to pitch this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last July. Meyer is the team's No. 2 prospect, so the team is obviously going to take a cautious approach with their prized right-hander. Meyer made two starts for the Marlins last season, but mainly pitched in Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jacksonville. The hope is that Meyer will be ready by the beginning of next season. The fact he was able to throw this week is a step in the right direction.

Tue Jun 27 202312:30Max Meyer Could Pitch In Arizona Fall League
Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer (elbow) could be available to pitch in the Arizona Fall League later this year. Meyer, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, had Tommy John surgery last August, but he could be ready to resume pitching this fall in October through November. The 24-year-old right-hander made his major-league debut for the Fish in 2022 and allowed five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out six in six innings over two starts. He had a 3.69 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 19 walks and 69 strikeouts in 61 innings over 13 starts in the minors for Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jacksonville. Meyer has the strength and athleticism to remain a starter in the big leagues, and his wipeout slider is his biggest weapon.

Thu Jan 19 202313:19Max Meyer To Start Throwing Soon
Miami Marlins right-hander Max Meyer (elbow) said that he will "start getting ready to throw here soon in a couple weeks." Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery last August after making his first two major-league starts in 2022. A return late in the 2023 season can't be ruled out, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect the 23-year-old to do much this year while recovering from elbow reconstruction. He is the team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and has a bright future ahead of him once his elbow injury is fully in the rearview mirror. Meyer's physique isn't exactly intimidating on the mound, but he has a nasty slider and has shown better command in recent seasons. He's a fine dynasty/keeper league stash for now.

Thu Jul 28 202212:00Max Meyer To Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles in the near future after his MRI exam on Monday showed a tear in his UCL. Meyer was making just his second major league start when he was forced to leave the game with right elbow discomfort, and now he'll miss the rest of this season and most of 2023. It's a big blow for the team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, after he gave up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two in six innings in his first two MLB starts this year. In 13 starts with Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jacksonville this year, Meyer had a 3.69 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 69 strikeouts and 19 walks in 61 innings pitched.

Sun Jul 24 202213:15Max Meyer Placed On The 15-Day IL
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain. Meyer lasted just 2/3 of an inning in Saturday's start against Pittsburgh before leaving early with the elbow issue. He missed nearly a month in Triple-A earlier this season while dealing with elbow nerve irritation so it's troubling that the same injury has popped up again. Miami will play this cautiously so fantasy managers should expect the 23-year-old to be out for a while.

Fri Jul 15 202200:01Max Meyer Will Make MLB Debut Saturday
The Miami Marlins are calling up starting pitcher Max Meyer to make his MLB debut for Saturday's contest versus the Phillies. Despite battling through an elbow injury in May, the 23-year-old has started 12 games at Triple-A this season, compiling a 3.72 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 65 K through 58 IP. Meyer was the third overall selection of the 2020 draft and is currently ranked the fifth-best pitching prospect in baseball according to MLB.com. Fantasy managers will want to scoop up the right-hander for pitching depth in the second half of the season, but may want to give him a start or two on the bench until he find his reigns at the big-league level.

Sat Jun 11 202211:11Max Meyer Throws Simulated Game Saturday
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer (elbow) threw a 30-pitch simulated game in Florida on Saturday morning, and it was his first time facing hitters since May 17. He was sitting in the 94-95 mph range and hit 97 mph on his final pitch. The team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, should be close to facing hitters in a game setting. Before his injury, Meyer had a 4.54 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 44 strikeouts and 14 walks in 39 2/3 innings over eight starts for Triple-A Jacksonville. The 23-year-old needs to refine his command before he gets to the next level, but with good health, he should make it to Miami's starting rotation at some point this season. Meyer has a nasty slider with a ton of horizontal break and repeats his fluid delivery well.

Thu May 26 202208:48Max Meyer To Throw Off Flat Ground
Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer (elbow) will throw off of flat ground Thursday. The talented right-hander was placed on the injured list last week with right ulnar nerve irritation. The 23-year-old got off to a sizzling start for Triple-A Jacksonville, but struggled in his last couple of starts. Those struggles could be contributed to his health. For the season, Meyer is 2-2 with a 4.54 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings. Pending health, Meyer should make his debut at some point in 2022 and will be worth rostering in all formats.

Thu May 19 202214:23Max Meyer Goes On Minor League Injured List
Miami Marlins right-hander Max Meyer landed on the minor league injured list on Thursday with ulnar nerve irritation, according to a source. He will miss at least one start and then be re-evaluated, and the Marlins don't think it's a serious injury. The team's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, had two poor outings for Triple-A Jacksonville recently, and it could be related to his injury. Overall, the 23-year-old hurler has allowed 20 earned runs on 32 hits while walking 14 and striking out 44 in 39 2/3 innings over eight starts for Jacksonville. As long as this doesn't end up being a serious injury, Meyer is a realistic option to join Miami's starting rotation later this year. Meyer will need to refine his command to have success in the majors, but there's a lot to like long term.

Wed Apr 13 202211:04Max Meyer Dominates In Second Start
Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer shined through five innings in a lights out performance for the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Tuesday. In his outing, Meyer faced the minimum of 15 batters and was perfect with eight strikeouts. He is now 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA, two hits allowed and 13 strikeouts in just nine innings over two starts. Although he doesn't possess the prototypical pitcher profile at just six feet tall, Meyer's work speaks for itself. With good secondary pitches to compliment a fastball that can reach 100 mph, the third pick in the 2020 MLB draft has a true shot at rising to the show in short time. The biggest obstacle for Meyer is the fact that the Marlins have a good starting rotation and have no reason to rush the right-hander to the big leagues. However, Meyer can always force the Marlins hand and that's something that could happen at some point throughout the 2022 campaign. He should be on the radars of managers in all formats at the moment.

Mon Mar 21 202216:49Max Meyer Throws Four Spectacular Innings
Miami Marlins rookie pitcher Max Meyer was outstanding in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the New York Mets. The 23-year-old started the third inning and ended up pitching four perfect innings while striking out five. He was dominant in all four innings and, at least based on this one performance, looks more than ready for at least a bullpen role on the Marlins roster. Rumors have swirled about him being showcased in advance of a trade for a center fielder, but regardless of what uniform he's wearing when he makes his debut, Meyer will be worth rostering in most formats once he's up on the big league club.

Wed Sep 22 202121:02Max Meyer To Finish The Year At Triple-A
Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer will be promoted from Double-A to Triple-A to finish out the 2021 season. Meyer is MLB Pipeline's No. 31 overall prospect and he was exceptional at Double-A Pensacola this year. Over 20 starts, he posted a 2.41 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP while averaging 10.1 K/9. The 22-year-old could find himself making his MLB debut next year if he continues to progress well. The Marlins have a ton of pitching options across their organization, but few have as high upside as Meyer, who was selected third overall by the team in the 2020 MLB Draft.
