Sun Apr 2812:51Alek Thomas Doing Everything But Running Full Speed
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (hamstring) started baserunning activities on April 24, with manager Torey Lovullo saying that Thomas is doing everything except running full speed. The skipper doesn't have a target date for Thomas' return, but he said Thomas is progressing well. The 24-year-old strained his left hamstring when he grounded into a double play on March 31 against the Colorado Rockies and underwent an MRI exam on April 1 that showed a strain that was greater than a Grade 1 strain. It sounds like he's getting close to being able to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. Until Thomas is able to return, Corbin Carroll will continue to operate as the team's center fielder, giving Jake McCarthy and Randal Grichuk more reps in the outfield. Thomas has still yet to show much offensively for fantasy managers, but he's a stud on defense when healthy.

Fri Apr 1218:17Alek Thomas Progressing Well
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (hamstring) recently told reporters that he is progressing well from his injury. The 23-year-old was placed on the injured list roughly two weeks ago due to a hamstring injury. Thomas has been taking at-bats in extended spring training and it appears to be going well. The D-Backs haven't given a timetable on Thomas lately, so fantasy managers will have to be patient. In the meantime, Jake McCarthy will continue seeing increased time in the outfield.

Mon Apr 119:07Diamondbacks Place Alek Thomas On Injured List
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Alek Thomas (left) on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a strained left hamstring and recalled outfielder Jorge Barrosa up from the minor leagues in a corresponding move. Thomas injured his hamstring on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies and will now be forced to miss at least the next 10 days. Jake McCarthy is starting in right field and batting eight in the lineup on Monday against the New York Yankees and right-hander Luis Gil, and he should benefit from most of the extra playing time in Arizona's outfield for however long Thomas is sidelined. Corbin Carroll has shifted over to replace Thomas in center field. Thomas went 3-for-14 (.214) with a homer and four RBI in the first four games of the year before landing on the IL.

Sun Mar 3119:22Alek Thomas Pulled From Sunday's Game
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (hamstring) was forced to leave early during Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Thomas suffered a left hamstring injury while running out a double in the first inning. He remained in the game for a few innings before exiting due to left hamstring tightness. It's uncertain how long he's going to be sidelined. The D-Backs will likely have Thomas undergo further testing before deciding on what to do. If Thomas misses time, Jake McCarthy and Joc Pederson could see more playing time in the outfield.

Wed Mar 613:30Alek Thomas Retools His Swing
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas came to spring training this year with a retooled swing. In his two years in the big leagues, Thomas has been a below-average hitter, and his biggest problem has been loading his weight awkwardly over the outside of his back foot. From a closed position, he had to pull his upper body awkwardly towards first base to reach inside pitches. Thomas and his new hitting coach worked this offseason to create separation in his load and also to give him more balance to stay under control at the plate. In his two major-league seasons, Thomas hasn't hit a ball harder than 111.3 mph, but in an at-bat before spring training against a minor-league pitcher, he hit one 116 mph. The 23-year-old former top prospect is already a strong defender, but cleaning up his hitting mechanics could take him to the next level in 2024 as an all-around player in Arizona.

Mon Feb 2617:32Alek Thomas Dealing With Wrist Soreness
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (wrist) is dealing with wrist soreness that kept him out of the team's Cactus League lineup on Monday. He has been tracking pitches during live batting practice sessions without swinging in the meantime, and manager Torey Lovullo said the concern is minimal and that Thomas could have played on Monday, if needed. It sounds as though the 23-year-old center fielder should be back in spring training action by the end of the week, if not sooner, and he'll be good to go for Opening Day in late March. Thomas struggled at the plate in 125 games for the D-backs last year, slashing .230/.273/.374 with nine home runs, 39 RBI and nine steals and was demoted to the minors in the first half. Unless he improves against left-handers, he probably isn't going to be much of an asset in shallow mixed leagues in 2024.

Fri Oct 27 202316:31Alek Thomas Hitting Seventh In Game 1
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas is in the lineup for Game 1 of the World Series, hitting seventh for the away team. Thomas will likely sit against a left-handed starter, such as Jordan Montgomery or Andrew Heaney, but he will likely start when a righty is on the mound. Thomas is an excellent defensive center fielder, credited with six outs above average this season, but has had his struggles at the plate. The 23-year-old is hitting .212 during the postseason with four home runs.

Sat Oct 21 202313:47Alek Thomas Plays The Hero In Game 4
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit, two-run home run in a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the NLCS on Friday. Thomas started this game on the bench as the Phillies went with southpaw Cristopher Sanchez as their starter. The D-Backs were facing a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning before Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled off Craig Kimbrel to set the stage for Alek Thomas, who replaced Emmanuel Rivera as a pinch-hitter. Thomas then cranked a two-run shot to right-center field and tied the game. Ketel Marte would single and come around to score via a Gabriel Moreno single later in the frame. The series is now tied at two games apiece and heads back to Philadelphia on Saturday. Thomas, who has mostly struggled this postseason, has still delivered some big hits. He's slashing just .192/.241/.538 across 26 at-bats but he does have three home runs and five RBI to go along with that poor batting line.

Fri Oct 20 202319:21Alek Thomas Retreats To The Bench
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas will remain out of the starting lineup ahead of Friday's Game 4 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The D-Backs will stick with their Game 3 lineup here. That means, Thomas will sit out his second straight game against a left-handed starting pitcher. Possibly, Thomas comes off the bench as a pinch-hitter later in the contest. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will patrol the outfield in Game 4.

Thu Oct 19 202313:26Alek Thomas Out Of Game 3 Lineup
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas will take a seat for Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Thursday with the Philadelphia Phillies throwing left-hander Ranger Suarez. Corbin Carroll will start in center field and bat second, while Emmanuel Rivera will play third base and bat in the eight-hole. Evan Longoria is the designated hitter and is batting seventh. The 23-year-old Thomas hits the bench after hitting just .143 in 81 trips to the plate against lefties during the regular season. He's also gone just 4-for-24 (.167) with two homers, three RBI, eight strikeouts and three runs scored in seven postseason games so far this year. Rivera is 2-for-8 in his career against Suarez with two doubles, four RBI and a strikeout.

Sat Sep 9 202312:53Alek Thomas Out Of The Lineup Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas is not in the starting lineup Saturday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs. The 23-year-old started in center field on Friday and went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in his team's narrow 1-0 win but Corbin Carroll will take over center field duties on Saturday afternoon. Although he boasts excellent defense, Thomas has struggled mightily at the dish this season. He's hitting just .238 with eight homers, nine stolen bases, and a .698 OPS across 333 trips to the plate in the big leagues, production that grades out 23% below the league average, as per his 77 wRC+. A poor 4.8% BB% has undoubtedly contributed to his metrics at the plate but Thomas does have a solid combination of power and speed that could potentially put him on the fantasy radar in 2024.

Fri Aug 4 202317:23Alek Thomas Takes A Seat Against Twins
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas will retreat to the bench on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. Thomas is in a bit of a funk in his last five games, getting just one hit in 13 at-bats with six strikeouts, so he'll get a mental day of rest to begin a series in Minnesota. Tommy Pham, Corbin Carroll and Jake McCarthy will be Arizona's starting outfielders from left to right on Friday against Twins right-hander Bailey Ober. In his second major-league season with Arizona in 2023, Thomas is hitting .233/.268/.410 with seven home runs, 13 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI, five stolen bases and 31 runs scored in 75 games and 239 trips to the plate. The 23-year-old will continue to be a part-time player for the Snakes, especially with Pham now in town.

Mon Jun 19 202316:34Alek Thomas Recalled On Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas has been recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday. He returns to the majors following a minor league stint after struggling with the D-Backs to open the season. Thomas slashed .195/.252/.327 with two homers and three steals during his first stint with the D-Backs. The 23-year-old went down to the minors and crushed it. He hit .348 (39-for-112) with three homers and two steals in 26 games at the Triple-A level. Hopefully, Thomas will be able to carry his momentum into the big league level. In a corresponding move, infielder Josh Rojas has been optioned to the minors.

Wed May 17 202313:16Alek Thomas Sent To Triple-A
The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Alek Thomas to Triple-A Reno after Tuesday night's game and recalled right-hander Luis Frias from Reno in a corresponding move. Thomas will go down to the minors to work on things after beginning his second major-league season in poor form at the plate. In 39 games and 123 plate appearances, he has hit just .195 (22-for-113) with five doubles, two triples, two home runs, 10 RBI, three stolen bases, 14 runs scored, eight walks and 27 strikeouts. Making matters worse for the 23-year-old, rookie Dominic Fletcher has been red-hot for the Snakes since being called up at the end of April. Thomas should return to the desert sooner than later, but for now, he'll bid his time in the minors.

Thu Apr 13 202300:36Alek Thomas Registers Two Doubles Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas was 2-for-4 Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Thomas had two doubles in the 7-3 win. The 22-year-old has only three hits in the first 12 games with the Diamondbacks. Fantasy managers will need more from Thomas as the season progresses, as he is carrying a low batting average of .200. However, he has been ok on the base path recording two stolen bases while driving in two runs.

Mon Apr 10 202310:08Alek Thomas Logs RBI Single, Swipes Bag In Sunday's Win
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas went 1-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base in Sunday's 11-6 win over the Dodgers. With runners on first and second, Thomas laced a single off Michael Grove in the bottom of the third inning to give the Diamondbacks the 4-3 lead. The 22-year-old started the season hitless in the first 16 at-bats but went 5-for-9 with a triple, two RBI, and a stole base over the weekend series against Los Angeles. According to Baseball Savant, Thomas' expected batting average (xBA) of .342 is in the 96th percentile. Fantasy managers should look to add Thomas in all league formats while he's wielding a hot bat.

Mon Sep 26 202218:34Alek Thomas Sent To Triple-A, Jake McCarthy Reinstated
The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned rookie outfielder Alek Thomas to Triple-A Reno after Sunday's game and reinstated outfielder Jake McCarthy from the bereavement list in a corresponding move. In his first 113 big-league games, Thomas has struggled with the lumber, hitting .231/.275/.344 with eight home runs, 39 RBI, 45 runs scored, four stolen bases and 74 strikeouts in 381 at-bats. He's been especially bad this month, going 7-for-55 (.127) with no homers, four RBI and nine strikeouts in 18 games. McCarthy was unavailable last weekend but should return to the starting lineup for the start of a series on Tuesday against the Houston Astros. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter has hit a solid .288/.352/.446 with eight homers, 41 RBI, 49 runs and 19 stolen bases in 91 games in his second MLB season.

Wed Jun 29 202220:13Alek Thomas Struggling At The Plate
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Wednesday's 4-0 loss against the San Diego Padres. He's in the midst of a seven-game stretch in which he's slashed .125/.160/.250 with eight punchouts. Thomas is still having a decent rookie season, hitting .253 with six home runs, 16 RBI, 24 runs, and four stolen bases across 46 games. Fantasy managers in shallow leagues can lay off the 22-year-old, but those in deeper leagues who need some speed can take a shot.

Sun Jun 12 202211:38Alek Thomas Will Continue To See Regular At-Bats
Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Alek Thomas, one of the team's most well-regarded prospects, will continue to see regular at-bats, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Meanwhile, Daulton Varsho will play the outfield while getting only occasional starts behind the plate now that Carson Kelly is back from the injured list. Through 30 games entering Saturday, Thomas had held his own, posting a .760 OPS while playing good defense in center field. Varsho was the designated hitter on Saturday, but Lovullo is unsure who will play there when both Varsho and Thomas are in the outfield together. Finding regular at-bats for all six of the team's outfielders will be hard, and Varsho and Thomas figure to be the closest thing to everyday players among a group that also includes David Peralta, Pavin Smith, Jordan Luplow and Jake McCarthy.

Sun May 8 202212:28Diamondbacks Call Up Top Prospect Alek Thomas
The Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect outfielder Alek Thomas from Triple-A Reno on Sunday. He is slashing .277/.362/.495 with four home runs, 14 RBI, 19 runs scored, and three stolen bases over 24 games in Triple-A. The Diamondbacks' second-round pick in 2018 is expected to make his debut on Sunday. The 22-year-old is a mature hitter for his age and should provide fantasy managers power, some speed, and a strong average as long as he's in the big leagues. Thomas should be a priority to add in all league formats as the upside is there for one of Arizona's top prospects.
