Baltimore Orioles left-hander Bruce Zimmermann underwent successful core-muscle surgery on Thursday at Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, according to the team. The surgery was performed by Dr. Alex Poor. Zimmermann is expected to be ready for spring training next year. The 28-year-old southpaw only made seven relief appearances for the O's in 2023, posting a 4.73 ERA (4.53 FIP), 1.27 WHIP, no walks and 14 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings in his fourth major-league season. In 21 starts (99 2/3 innings) for Triple-A Norfolk on the farm, Zimmermann went 4-7 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 39 walks and 110 strikeouts for the Tides.

The left-handed reliever will be taking the place of Jorge Lopez, who was designated for assignment. It remains to be seen if he will make another start this season, but if he did it would likely be the final game of the season at the Blue Jays.

Zimmermann is not fantasy relevant, but the O's would take any kind of help they could get in their rotation. The 26-year-old had been one of the team's better starters prior to his injury with a 4-4 record and 4.83 ERA.
