Tue Apr 2312:14Josiah Gray Playing Catch
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow, forearm) played catch up to 60 feet for two days in a row late last week, according to manager Dave Martinez. Gray was put on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) after an MRI exam showed a right elbow/forearm flexor strain before his scheduled April 9 start against the San Francisco Giants. He is 0-2 on the year with a 14.04 ERA in two starts, so he may have already been dropped in a lot of fantasy leagues after he landed on the IL. The 26-year-old is without a clear timetable to return and has plenty of steps to go through before the Nationals will seriously consider activating him from the IL and throwing him back into their starting rotation.

Sat Apr 2000:44Josiah Gray Increasing Throwing Distance
Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said before Friday's game versus the Houston Astros that starting pitcher Josiah Gray (elbow/forearm) was able to increase his throwing distance up to 60 feet on Thursday and Friday. Gray has been on the 15-day injured list since April 9 due to a right elbow/forearm flexor strain, and while he's eligible to come off the IL after the weekend, fantasy managers should not expect Gray to be available before May. The Nats could opt to send him on a brief minor-league rehab assignment before returning him to the big-league roster, as it's fair to expect a cautious approach after the 26-year-old former top prospect allowed 13 runs in his first 8 1/3 innings of the year before going down. Rookie left-hander Mitchell Parker is occupying Washington's rotation for now, but he won't be a recommended streamer in a tough matchup for Sunday's scheduled start against Houston.

Tue Apr 919:50No Structural Damage For Josiah Gray
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) said his elbow/forearm strain is muscular after his MRI exam showed no structural damage to his elbow ligament. Gray spoke up quickly after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow in his last start and is hoping that helped this from being a more serious injury. The 26-year-old will miss at least the next two weeks after being put on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. It's been a tough start for Gray in 2024 after he made his first All-Star team in 2023, as he's currently sporting a 14.04 ERA with nine strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings over his first two starts this year. Joan Adon was recalled from Triple-A and will take Gray's spot in the starting rotation for now and start against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

Tue Apr 916:04Josiah Gray Placed On 15-Day Injured List
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) on Tuesday with a right-elbow/forearm flexor strain and recalled pitcher Joan Adon from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. Fantasy baseball managers in shallower mixed leagues that have Gray rostered will probably waste no time dumping him to the waiver wire after he's started the 2024 campaign by surrendering 13 earned runs on 15 hits (two home runs) while walking five and striking out nine in 8 1/3 innings over his first two starts of the year. The 26-year-old could also be in danger of missing serious time given the nature of his arm injury. Adon will make the start on Tuesday in San Francisco against the Giants.

Mon Apr 822:12Josiah Gray Tries To Rebound In San Francisco
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray will try to shake off a disastrous start to his season when he heads to the mound to face the San Francisco Giants and young left-hander Kyle Harrison in Tuesday's road start. Gray was the focal point alongside catcher Keibert Ruiz of the 2021 trade that sent Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers, earning an All-Star nod in 2023 after serving up more home runs (38) than anyone else in 2022. But 2024 has been a different story for Gray, who not only surrendered 12 runs in 16 1/3 innings in spring training, but he's also sacrificed 13 runs in his first 8 1/3 frames of the regular season. Over 20 innings (three starts) in his Nationals career against the Giants, however, the 26-year-old right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 10 strikeouts. Treat Gray as a sneaky fantasy option for DFS tournaments in a pitcher-friendly environment.

Sun Mar 1712:17Josiah Gray Named Nationals Opening Day Starter
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray has been named the team's Opening Day starter on March 28 in Cincinnati versus the Reds. It won't be an easy assignment in a hitter's park against an emerging Reds lineup with plenty of dangerous hitters in it. The 26-year-old Gray is coming off his first career All-Star season in 2023 in which he went 8-13 with a career-best 3.91 ERA (4.93 FIP) and 1.46 WHIP with 80 walks and 143 strikeouts in 159 innings pitched over a career-high 30 starts. While Gray shouldn't be on the fantasy radar in 12-team mixed fantasy leagues, he has the ability to be a useful matchup-based streamer in deeper leagues, but his Opening Day matchup against Cincy won't be one of those. Left Patrick Corbin is set to pitch the second game for the Nats in Cincinnati.

Mon Sep 11 202314:28Josiah Gray To Make His Next Start Thursday
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray will make his next start on Thursday on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates after having his last turn in the starting rotation skipped. Thursday's start will be his first since Sept. 3. The 25-year-old has struggled since the beginning of August, allowing 22 earned runs on 24 hits (four home runs) while walking 21 and striking out 20 in 23 1/3 innings in six starts, so it was a good time for the Nats to skip him in the rotation. Hopefully the time off in the last week will do him well in a plus matchup against Pittsburgh. In 27 starts for the Nats this year, Gray has gone 7-11 with a 4.13 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in his 141 2/3 innings of work.

Fri Jul 28 202308:49Josiah Gray Goes Six Scoreless Innings Thursday
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray kept the New York Mets at bay on Thursday, allowing no runs on just two hits over six innings of work. However, he walked three to just four strikeouts, and his club ultimately lost 2-1. Gray's in the midst of his best campaign in the big leagues, posting a 3.27 ERA with seven victories, but owns a meager 19.9% strikeout rate to go along with a 10.5% walk rate and 1.41 WHIP. Fantasy managers can roster the 25-year-old in deeper formats, but his value is quite limited in standard leagues.

Fri Jul 14 202309:06Josiah Gray Making Next Start On Sunday
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray will make his first start after the break on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Bobby Blanco of MASN. The third-year player made his first career All-Star game this season after posting a 3.41 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 21.1% strikeout rate with a 6-7 record across 18 first-half starts. Regression is likely coming for Gray, who owns a 4.79 FIP, so fantasy managers in shallower leagues can continue to leave him on the waiver wire, especially with his meager strikeout numbers.

Wed May 17 202300:12Josiah Gray Turns In Quality Start Tuesday
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray put forth another solid effort in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Marlins. Gray pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts. The 25-year-old is putting together a season that fantasy managers have long hoped for, going 3-5 with a 2.73 ERA, 7.69 K/9 rate, and 3.76 BB/9 rate. The strikeouts have been a bit down and the walks have still been high, but Gray has managed to avoid the long ball, which has historically been an issue for him. He still has room for improvement but should have another opportunity to put up another good start in his next matchup against the Tigers.

Fri May 5 202312:42Josiah Gray Taking On The Diamondbacks Friday
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray is toeing the rubber in Friday's contest with Merrill Kelly and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The third-year player has given fantasy managers solid results so far through six starts, pitching to a 2.67 ERA with a pair of victories, but owns a 1.28 WHIP with just a 22.0% strikeout rate and 9.2% walk rate. If Gray's 4.72 xFIP is any indication, the former top-100 prospect has some regression coming. The 25-year-old still has the talent to be a significant fantasy pitcher, but right now, owners should only start him in favorable matchups.

Tue Mar 28 202312:00Josiah Gray To Make Season Debut Saturday
Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray will start the second game of the season on Saturday against the division-rival Atlanta Braves. Gray will look to continue pitching well after allowing only three runs (one earned) on 13 hits while walking two and striking out 14 in five starts over 16 1/3 innings in Grapefruit League play this spring. Fantasy managers in DFS will probably be looking to avoid Gray in a tough matchup against the Braves, but he's worth rostering in all fantasy leagues. The 25-year-old won't see many wins with the rebuilding Nats, but he could take a significant step forward in his second full season as a starter in the big leagues after having a 5.02 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 154 strikeouts in 148 2/3 innings in 2022.

Thu Sep 29 202200:03Josiah Gray Solid In Win Wednesday
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray was impressive Wednesday, limiting the red-hot Atlanta Braves to one run on two hits and two walks in six innings, as the Nationals would go on to win 3-2 in 10 innings. Gray struck out two batters and took a no-decision. Gray had given up at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts. With a 5.02 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 148 2/3 innings, it hasn't been the season the Nationals hoped for Gray. He figures to be off the fantasy radar heading into 2023, especially given the sorry state of the Nationals roster relative to the rest of the division.

Tue Aug 23 202211:32Nationals Monitoring Josiah Gray's Workload
The Washington Nationals are closely monitoring starting pitcher Josiah Gray's workload down the stretch. Gray threw 70 2/3 innings in his rookie season last year after debuting on July 20 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also tossed 15 2/3 frames in the minors in 2021. The 24-year-old right-hander entered his last start over the weekend ranked fourth in innings thrown by a second-year starter. His innings count stood at 123 1/3 after his start Saturday, an increase of nearly 40 total frames from last year. The Nats have considered the possibility of skipping Gray to address the increase in workload. Gray has gone 7-8 this year with a 4.67 ERA (5.65 FIP), 1.31 WHIP and 140 strikeouts in his 23 starts. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should be prepared for him to be skipped a few times down the stretch.

Sun Jun 19 202206:39Josiah Gray Tosses Six Scoreless Innings On Saturday
Washington Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray allowed one hit and three walks while striking out four across six scoreless innings in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He did not factor into the decision. The 24-year-old wasn't efficient and needed 117 pitches to reach six innings on Saturday, only landing 66 for strikes. He has pitched well over his last four starts, posting a 0.82 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 22:11 K: BB across 22 innings. Gray owns a 3.95 ERA, 1,26 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts over 68 1/3 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers should add Gray in all league formats while he's pitching well, and he can be used as a streamer in his next start Friday on the road against the Texas Rangers.

Wed Apr 13 202222:40Josiah Gray Dazzles In Win Against Atlanta
Washington Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray (1-1) allowed only one hit and three walks while striking out five across five scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves. The 24-year-old rebounded against the defending champs after being blasted for four runs by the New York Mets in his previous start. The right-hander limited the Braves to one hit and fired 50-of-82 pitches for strikes. He owns a 4.00 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts over nine innings in 2022. Gray has a ton of upside and should be rostered in all league formats. His next scheduled start is Monday at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sun Oct 3 202101:06Josiah Gray Closes Season With Solid Outing
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray made his final start of the year against the Red Sox Saturday, and he pitched well, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out seven batters and took a no-decision. Gray has now gone three consecutive starts without allowing more than three earned runs, and he's only allowed one home run in those three outings. That's a huge improvement after he allowed 18 homers over his first 11 appearances of the year. Gray is worth a late-round pick in 2022 drafts on upside alone.

Tue Sep 28 202111:44Josiah Gray Wins Second Career Game
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray earned the second win of his season and his career Monday, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Gray has now won two consecutive starts and has thrown at least five innings in three straight. Most importantly, he has not allowed a home run in either of his last two starts after giving up 16 in the 11 games preceding those. He's not a fantasy play this year, but there's plenty of future value.

Thu Sep 23 202112:49Josiah Gray Earns First Career Win
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray earned the first win of his young career Wednesday, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits and a walk against the Miami Marlins. He struck out eight batters. Gray has shown plenty of potential this year, but this start comes on the heels of four straight with at least five earned runs allowed. With a 5.92 ERA in 59 1/3 innings, he's impossible to trust in a fantasy playoff matchup.

Sat Sep 18 202100:04Josiah Gray Allows Five Runs Yet Again Friday
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray had another tough start against the Colorado Rockies Friday, giving up five runs on three hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters. Gray was fortunate to leave the game in position for a win, but the bullpen immediately gave up the lead. Gray now has a 6.24 ERA for the season without a win and should not be a factor in fantasy for the rest of the year.
