Thu Jan 19 202313:11Marlins Designate Daniel Castano For Assignment
The Miami Marlins designated left-hander Daniel Castano for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Johnny Cueto. The 2022 season was a tough one for Castano, as he suffered a concussion and also had a small labrum tear in his left shoulder in September. He ended up making just 10 appearances (seven starts) for the Fish, allowing 20 runs (16 earned) on 42 hits (five homers) while walking nine and striking out 20 in 35 2/3 innings pitched. Because there's a good chance he won't be ready for the start of spring training, he could go unclaimed on waivers, at which point he'd be free to sign with any MLB club. Castano has a 3.89 ERA (4.86 FIP) and 1.42 WHIP in three big-league seasons with Miami.

Thu Jul 28 202218:15Daniel Castano Dodges A Bullet
A CT scan came back normal on Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (concussion) on Thursday after he was hit in the forehead by a 104 mph comebacker in his outing against the Cincinnati Reds. Castano got the start and allowed an earned run on two hits in just two-thirds of an inning before departing the contest. The 27-year-old southpaw was diagnosed with a mild concussion and forehead contusion, but it could have been much worse. Although he may not be out for an extended period of time, there's still a good chance he'll go on the seven-day injured list. Coming into the day, Castano was 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and nine walks in 35 innings over nine outings (six starts).

Thu Jul 28 202216:26Daniel Castano Hit In The Head By A Comebacker
Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (forehead) was involved in a scary incident during Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. He was hit in his head by a comebacker off the bat of Reds infielder Donovan Solano. The hit was clocked off Solano's bat at 104.3 mph. Castano was removed from the game and he was able to walk off the field under his own power. As he walked off, a massive bruise on his forehead was on full display. The initial evaluation from the team was that he suffered a mild concussion and a forehead contusion. He will still be evaluated further and we should have more updates on his status later.

Fri Apr 23 202101:30Padres edge Dodgers 3-2 to open key NL West series
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurickson Profar singled and scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and the San Diego Padres opened the second series of the season in Southern California’s lively baseball rivalry with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night. Trent Grisham homered and had two hits for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid as they opened a four-game series at chilly Chavez Ravine with the Dodgers’ first home loss of the season. Los Angeles took two of three in San Diego last weekend, but the Padres answered with timely hits, strong pitching and a fantastic inning-ending double play in the eighth, capping yet another well-played matchup between two stacked rosters. AJ Pollock and Sheldon Neuse hit back-to-back homers leading off the seventh for the major league-leading Dodgers, who have lost three of four after a 13-2 start to the season. With several key hitters injured, Los Angeles has scored just 10 runs in its last five games. Profar and Victor Caratini... [More]
Mon Mar 29 202100:25Mad Bum gets opener for D-backs; Kluber is Yanks' No. 2
The Arizona Diamondbacks are ready to open the season in familiar fashion: with Mad Bum on the mound. Madison Bumgarner was tabbed by manager Torey Lovullo to make his second straight opening day start for the Diamondbacks on Thursday at San Diego. The 31-year-old four-time All-Star struggled last season — his first in Arizona — going 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three spring starts, including allowing six earned runs against Cincinnati on Friday. But Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract before last season, will still lead off a Diamondbacks rotation that includes Merrill Kelly, Caleb Smith, Taylor Widener and Luke Weaver. This will be the seventh opening day start in Bumgarner's career after doing so five times with San Francisco. The Yankees also are setting their rotation, announcing Sunday that Corey Kluber will follow ace Gerrit Cole against Toronto. Kluber, who signed a one-year, $11 million contract with New York, has thrown one inning in... [More]

Mon Mar 1 202116:57Alcantara leads young staff that should be Marlins' strength
MIAMI (AP) — At 25, Sandy Alcantara says he's old enough to be the Miami Marlins' ace. The Marlins agree. Alcantara has pitched less than 300 innings and has a career record of 11-19, but Miami is counting on him to lead a parade of talented young starting pitchers who are considered the team's strength. “That’s what the Marlins are looking for from me, and that's what I want,” said the Dominican right-hander, who pitched two scoreless innings against the Mets in his first spring training start Monday. “There are a lot of young guys behind me. I have to show them they can be like me. “It doesn’t matter how young I am. I have experience. I've been in the big leagues for four years now.” On Miami's staff, that's a lot. The other right-handers expected to help make up the rotation include Pablo López, Elieser Hernández and Sixto Sánchez. Four pitchers are contending for the last spot — left-hander Trevor Rogers and Daniel Castano, and right-handers Nick Neidert and Braxton Garrett. Among the... [More]
Sun Sep 27 202020:06Cardinals top Brewers, both reach postseason on final day
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Harrison Bader tripled and homered to help the St. Louis Cardinals clinch a postseason berth on the final day of the regular season with a 5-2 win over Milwaukee, and the Brewers also earned a playoff spot Sunday via help on the West Coast moments later. St. Louis (30-28) will be the fifth seed in the NL and open a three-game wild-card series at San Diego on Wednesday. By winning, the Cardinals avoided having to travel to Detroit for two makeup games Monday. The Brewers (29-31) locked up the eighth seed and a third consecutive postseason berth after the Padres beat San Francisco 5-4 in a game that ended about 15 minutes later. The Giants finished with an identical record as the Brewers but lost out on a tiebreaker due to an inferior intradivision record. Milwaukee will face the top-seeded Dodgers in Los Angeles in a three-game series that also starts Wednesday. The Brewers haven’t had a winning record at any point this season. Milwaukee and Houston will be the first teams... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Miami outfielder Starling Marte and right-hander José Ureña left Sundays' regular-season finale against the New York Yankees after getting hurt in the early innings. Marte was hit on the front of his helmet by Clarke Schmidt’s 94 mph fastball in the second inning. The pitch knocked off the helmet. Marte stayed down for a few minutes and was replaced by Lewis Brinson. Ureña, a candidate for Miami’s postseason bullpen, was hit on his pitching hand by a 103.9 mph line drive from AL batting leader DJ LeMahieu with one out in the third. Ureña crumpled over in pain, stayed down in front of the mound before exiting the game. He was replaced by Daniel Castano. Miami acquired Marte from Arizona on Aug. 31. He is hitting .245 with four homers and 13 RBI in 28 games with the Marlins. Ureña was among 18 Marlins sidelined with COVID-19 early this season.
