Thu Mar 1416:31Brewers Won't Name A Defined Closer To Fill In For Devin Williams
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams (back) is expected to miss around three months due to stress fractures in his back. General manager Matt Arnold said he would leave the decision up to manager Pat Murphy and his staff as to who will be the team's closer while Williams is sidelined. Abner Uribe, as well as Joel Payamps and Trevor Megill, seem to be the most obvious replacements for save chances, though none of the trio has had much big-league closing experience. Murphy said he has no intentions of naming one defined closer unless one naturally emerges during the season. While Uribe has the most natural stuff to be a closer, Payamps should also be in the mix, and this could end up being a total committee approach. Payamps feels like the best speculation for fantasy managers scrounging for saves late in deep-mixed drafts.

Wed Mar 1322:41Devin Williams Expected To Miss Three Months With Stress Fractures
Milwaukee Brewers star closer Devin Williams (back) has two stress fractures in his back and is expected to miss around three months, according to sources. Williams pitched through back soreness last September, but it returned this spring. He will rehab and is expected to return by midseason. The top fantasy closer will now miss at least half the season, which will obviously cause his stock to drop considerably for those who have yet to draft for the 2024 season. The 29-year-old right-hander saved 36 games for the Brew Crew in 40 chances last year while also posting an elite 1.53 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 87 strikeouts and 28 walks in 58 2/3 innings pitched. It's a massive blow to the back end of Milwaukee's bullpen before the start of the season. Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps and Abner Uribe could all be options for saves in Milwaukee with Williams hurt.

Sun Mar 1018:01Devin Williams Headed For Second Opinion On Back
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Devin Williams is headed for a second opinion on his ailing back. The club's closer will see a spine specialist this week but the club isn't overly concerned about the issue as they are being cautious with the issue. The 29-year-old took over full-time closing duties in the 2023 season, working to an eye-popping 1.53 ERA alongside a 25.5% K-BB% across 58 2/3 frames a season ago. The righty had previously served as the Brewers' setup man for Josh Hader before the latter was dealt to the San Diego Padres prior to the trade deadline in the 2022 season. He recorded 36 saves last season for the division-winning Brewers and is a high-end closer ahead of the 2024 campaign. If healthy, he is worth an investment at his 47.59 ADP as one of the better strikeout artists at the closer position while Joel Payamps or Trevor Megill should be in line for save opportunities if Williams misses some time to begin the season.

Wed Mar 609:18Devin Williams Hit Hard
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams got rocked in a relief appearance against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. The All-Star closer entered in the bottom of the fourth inning and only lasted 1/3 of an inning. In his outing, he gave up two hits, four runs, two walks and one strikeout. It was just his second outing in the Cactus League this spring, following a scoreless inning in his first game. There isn't too much to read into with this outing as it can be chalked up as an off game. Nonetheless, Williams remains one of the top closers in the game and managers shouldn't hesitate to make him one of the first relievers off the boards in upcoming drafts.

Fri Feb 200:48Brewers Entertaining Possible Devin Williams Trade
The Milwaukee Brewers "have entertained the possibility" of trading star closer Devin Williams, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This news comes on the heels of a big night for the Brewers as they traded starter Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles. Milwaukee has already parted with Burnes and Brandon Woodruff this offseason, so moving on from Williams would be quite significant. A Williams trade would presumably signal a rebuild of sorts for the Brewers, though such a path would counter some of the moves they've made this offseason, like signing Rhys Hoskins. Nevertheless, it's no secret that the Brewers could fetch quite the haul for Williams, who accrued a phenomenal 1.53 ERA and 13.35 K/9 while locking down 38 saves in 2023. He figures to be an All-Star-caliber closer for several years to come.

Thu Jan 1123:07Brewers Avoid Arbitration With Devin Williams
The Milwaukee Brewers and right-handed reliever Devin Williams agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal to avoid salary arbitration on Thursday. The deal includes a team option for the 2025 season. Williams' 2024 salary will likely come out to around $7 million. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander should be the first closer off the board in fantasy drafts in 2024 after he posted an excellent 1.53 ERA (2.66 FIP), 0.92 WHIP, a career-high 36 saves, 28 walks and 87 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings over 61 appearances out of the bullpen. The two-time All-Star will be Milwaukee's locked-in closer heading into the 2024 season and has one of the nastiest changeups in the game.

Wed Nov 29 202319:09Devin Williams Wins NL Reliever Of The Year Award
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was named the 2023 Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year. It's the second time Williams has won the award after back-to-back lights-out seasons coming out of Milwaukee's bullpen. He had only 15 saves in 2022 but was the Brew Crew's unquestioned closer this year. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander finished his fifth major-league season with an 8-3 record, 1.53 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 87 strikeouts and career-high 36 saves in 58 2/3 innings over 61 appearances in relief. Williams has proven the last two years that he is an elite fantasy closer with his swing-and-miss stuff.

He is a top-five closer and will be drafted that way next year.

Wed Aug 2 202317:44Devin Williams Blows Save Opportunity Versus Nationals
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams allowed two unearned runs and was charged with a blown save and a loss in the ninth inning against the Nationals on Wednesday. The inning began with a costly error by Carlos Santana. Unfortunately, the game concluded with another error, this time by Andruw Monasterio, the third baseman, whose throw to home plate went off-target during a routine force play. This costly mistake allowed the tying and winning runs to score. Williams now has a 5-3 record, a 1.52 ERA and 27 saves in 41/1 frames thrown. The 28-year-old has blown three saves this season.

Sun Jul 9 202319:49Devin Williams Hits 20-Save Mark
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Devin Williams was asked to protect a 1-0 lead versus the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. The right-hander needed only 15 pitches to retire the side in order. The All-Star closer wraps up his first half with an outstanding 1.89 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 45/18 K/BB. After this, Williams hit the 20-save mark on the season with only two blown saves so far. The 28-year-old should remain one of the best closers in baseball.

Tue Jul 4 202300:30Devin Williams Converts 18th Save Monday
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was able to pick up his 18th save of the season in Monday's 8-6 comeback win over the Cubs. Williams came in to pitch the top of the ninth up by two. He got the first out on a groundout, allowed a double, got the second out on another groundout, allowed a walk, and ended the game with a strikeout. The 28-year-old All-Star has notched eight saves in his last nine outings and now has a 1.47 ERA and 11.74 K/9 rate on the season, although his 4.99 BB/9 rate leaves something to be desired. Despite the walks, Williams should continue to serve as a middle-to-high-end fantasy option as long as the Brewers continue to play well.

Fri Jun 30 202301:15Devin Williams Earns Shaky Save Thursday
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams wasn't at his best but held onto a one-run lead to earn his 16th save of the season, and third in the last four days, in a 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Williams walked two and allowed a single to load the bases up before striking out Starling Marte to end the game. The master of the Airbender now has a sparkling 1.57 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 38 strikeouts in 28 IP. He now has a solid seven saves in June, a month where the Brewers have played better. If that continues, he should be an elite fantasy option for the rest of the season.

Tue Jun 27 202300:15Devin Williams Earns 14th Save Of Season Monday
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams picked up his 14th save of the season in Monday's 2-1 win over the Mets. Williams came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth up by one and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with no strikeouts. The 28-year-old has quietly had a solid season overall, converting all but one save opportunity with a 1.69 ERA, 11.81 K/9 rate, and 4.73 BB/9 rate. The Brewers haven't performed quite as well as expected, which has limited Williams' opportunities to provide elite fantasy value, but he should continue to be a strong option.

Wed Jun 21 202300:05Devin Williams Converts 13th Save Tuesday

The 28-year-old has now converted all but one of his save opportunities with a 1.82 ERA, 12.77 K/9 rate, and 5.11 BB/9 rate. He should continue to be a middle-to-high-end fantasy closer, although fantasy managers probably wish he would get a few more opportunities to provide value.

Wed Jun 14 202300:48Devin Williams Blows Save, Takes Loss Tuesday
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams turned in his first dud of the season in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Twins. Williams came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth up by two. He allowed a leadoff solo home run, walked a hitter, and then allowed a game-tying RBI single before allowing the game-winning two-run home run. It was a complete disaster for the 28-year-old, but it was his first blown save of the season compared to 10 converted saves. He has pitched well overall with a 2.08 ERA, a 12.46 K/9 rate, and a 4.57 BB/9 rate. The walks are a bit of an issue, but the real issue has been Williams' relative lack of save opportunities overall this season. He remains a high-end closer, but his fantasy value has been limited due to a lack of opportunity to this point.

Wed May 31 202322:11Devin Williams Picks Up Ninth Save
Milwaukee Brewers All-Star closer Devin Williams recorded his ninth save of the season in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Williams surrendered a leadoff double in that ninth to Daulton Varsho but retired the next three batters in order to seal the win. The 28-year-old has been one of the most electric relievers in the game as demonstrated by his 0.51 ERA through 17 2/3 innings. He has made 17 appearances while striking out 22 batters with just seven walks. Williams owns a 34.9% strikeout rate, 11.1% walk rate, and a .125 opponent average. Despite the struggles of the Brewers' offense, the pitching staff has kept them in contention, and Williams has been a big part of their success on the mound.

Mon May 22 202302:46Devin Williams Shuts Down Rays To Earn Seventh Save
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Devin Williams secured a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays with a multi-inning save on Sunday. Williams entered the game with two outs in the eight and runners at second and first. He walked a batter, but got out of the inning unscathed. He pitched around another walk in the ninth to lock down the win. Saves have been hard to come by for Williams, who picked up just his second of May in this one. It has nothing to do with his performance, though, as he has pitched to an immaculate 0.59 ERA and 0.85 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 15 IP. The righty should continue to be an elite closing option all season, and the save chances will come eventually.
