Thu Feb 1512:19Tyler Wells, Cole Irvin Front-Runners For Final Rotation Spots
The Baltimore Orioles starting rotation on Opening Day is expected to be headlined by right-handers Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez and Dean Kremer, with Tyler Wells and Cole Irvin likely the front-runners for the final two spots. Wells and Irvin could be needed early on due to injuries to Kyle Bradish (elbow) and ... [More]

Fri Jun 9 202314:30Cole Irvin To Start On Saturday
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Cole Irvin will get the nod versus the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. This marks the first time that Irvin as made a start since April 13. He was solid in Triple-A, posting a 3.21 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 22/4 K/BB across seven starts in Norfolk. It's uncertain if the 29-year-old will remain in the rotation long term, but he'll at least make one start. Fantasy managers should consider Irvin a possible streaming option against the Royals struggling offense.

Tue May 16 202312:30Orioles Call Up Cole Irvin
The Baltimore Orioles recalled left-hander Cole Irvin from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday and optioned right-hander Logan Gillaspie to Norfolk after Monday's game in a corresponding move. Irvin got himself demoted quickly to the minor leagues after allowing a whopping 15 runs on 17 hits (two homers surrendered) while walking eight and striking out 13 in 12 2/3 innings over three starts early on. The 29-year-old southpaw righted himself with a 3.19 ERA in five outings at Norfolk, and now he'll return to the big leagues to provide some length for Baltimore's bullpen. Irvin can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes as long as he sticks in relief.

Fri Apr 14 202312:52Orioles Option Cole Irvin
The Baltimore Orioles optioned left-hander Cole Irvin to the minors after another poor outing on Thursday against the Oakland Athletics in which he allowed six runs on five hits (one homer allowed) while walking two and striking out four in four innings pitched. Irvin has really struggled in his first three starts in 2023, allowing 15 earned runs on 17 hits (two homers surrendered) while walking eight and striking out 13 in 12 2/3 frames. The Orioles would like the 29-year-old southpaw to work on some things in the minors before they give him another shot in the major-league starting rotation. Last year for the A's, Irvin went 9-13 with a career-best 3.98 ERA (4.21 FIP), 1.16 WHIP and a career-high 128 strikeouts in 181 innings over 30 starts.

Thu Jan 26 202318:03Orioles Acquire Cole Irvin From A's
The Baltimore Orioles acquired left-hander Cole Irvin and minor-league right-hander Kyle Virbitsky from the Oakland Athletics on Thursday in exchange for infield prospect Darell Hernaiz, according to sources. Irvin, a 28-year-old southpaw, had a career-best 3.98 ERA (4.21 FIP), 1.16 WHIP and 17.3 percent strikeout rate in 30 starts covering 181 innings in his second full season as a starter for the A's in 2022. He doesn't strike out a ton of batters, though, keeping his fantasy upside low, and the move to a much more hitter-friendly home ballpark and the tough American League East division are downgrades for Irvin heading into his fifth MLB season in 2023. Virbitsky, 24, had a 4.63 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with a career-high 140 strikeouts and 30 walks in 126 1/3 innings over 23 outings (22 starts) for Single-A Stockton and High-A Lansing last year.

Thu Aug 25 202211:29Cole Irvin Strikes Out 11 Against Miami
Oakland Athletics left-hander Cole Irvin racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts in a no-decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-innings win over the Miami Marlins. Irvin threw seven shutout innings, allowed only three hits and didn't walk a single batter. The 28-year-old southpaw was virtually untouchable in this one, and in the process he lowered his ERA on the year to 3.16. He also has a 1.03 WHIP, 98 strikeouts and 26 walks in 142 1/3 innings over his 23 starts for the last-place A's. It was Irvin's 13th quality start of the season, making him very attractive in fantasy baseball despite pitching for a bad team.

Sat Aug 20 202212:35Cole Irvin Touched Up By Seattle
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin took his 11th loss of the season Friday after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks to the Seattle Mariners. He struck out two batters. Five of those six runs allowed came off the bat off Seattle third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who took Irvin deep twice. Irvin has now given up five earned runs in consecutive starts, and yet he maintains a solid 3.33 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 22 games started. Being a member of the A's and only having 87 strikeouts in 135 1/3 innings pitched combine to limit his fantasy upside.

Sat Jul 23 202212:20Cole Irvin Goes Seven Strong Innings
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin picked up the win over the Texas Rangers Friday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out eight batters to improve his record to 5-7 on the season. With a 3.08 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 102 1/3 innings, Irvin certainly deserves better than his record, but Oakland simply isn't a good enough team to deliver more wins. Irvin carries much more value in sabermetrically inclined leagues but is worth a look in good matchups in all formats.

Sun May 22 202206:26Cole Irvin Will Start Sunday Vs. The Angels
Oakland Athletics pitcher Cole Irvin (shoulder) will start Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. He missed all of May after being placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder tendinitis. The southpaw allowed one run on five hits while striking out six during a rehab start with Single-A Stockton. He owns a 2.93 WHIP, 1.16 WHIP, and an 18:7 K: BB across 27 2/3 innings for the A's in 2022. Irvin could be on a pitch count with this being his first start since April 30th; fantasy managers should proceed with caution when inserting the 28-year-old into starting lineups for Sunday's slate.

Thu May 5 202221:47Cole Irvin Placed On The 10-Day Injured List
Oakland Athletics pitcher Cole Irvin (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. He is dealing with shoulder tightness and will miss at least the next two weeks. The 28-year-old owns a 2.93 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and an 18:7 K: BB over 27 2/3 innings in 2022. Oakland has yet to officially announce a starter for Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Zach Logue is the favorite to draw the start and be called up ahead of Friday's game. Fantasy managers might want to see how Logue pitches on Friday before considering using the southpaw as a streamer.

Wed May 4 202215:16Cole Irvin's Friday Start Up In The Air
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin (shoulder) felt shoulder soreness and is being evaluated, according to manager Mark Kotsay. Zach Logue is with the team in case the A's need a starter for Friday at the Minnesota Twins. Kotsay said Irvin hasn't been ruled out for his start on Friday, but the team will make a decision on Thursday. Fantasy managers should consider the left-hander to be day-to-day, but make other plans just in case. The 28-year-old has been solid for Oakland in his five starts, posting a 2.93 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, a 15.9% strikeout rate and a 6.2% walk rate in 27 2/3 innings so far in 2022. Logue, also a left-hander, made his MLB debut this year and has thrown only 1 1/3 relief innings, so he won't be a fantasy option if he makes his first big-league start on Friday.

Thu Apr 14 202218:50Cole Irvin Picks Up Win At Rays On Thursday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed three runs across 6 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season Thursday at Tampa Bay. Irvin allowed five hits and didn't allow a walk, though he only picked up two strikeouts. The 28-year-old lefty was solid at times for Oakland last season as he pitched to a 4.24 ERA across 178 1/3 innings, however, a minuscule 16.3% strikeout rate severely limits his upside in fantasy. Irvin is a matchup-dependent streamer in deep leagues, though he does get a favorable draw at home against the Orioles next time out.

Tue Sep 28 202110:10Cole Irvin Struggles In Loss To Mariners On Monday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed five earned runs in just three innings pitched to suffer the loss Monday versus Seattle. Irvin was given a three-run lead in the first inning, but he wasn't sharp in this one, getting knocked out before recording an out in the fourth inning. On the season Irvin has a less-than-stellar 4.18 ERA that should be worse based on his 4.85 xFIP and 4.95 ERA. He doesn't strike anyone out as his 16.2% strikeout rate is the third-lowest among all qualified starters. Irvin is not a recommended start in his last outing of the year versus Houston.

Thu Sep 23 202110:08Cole Irvin Allows Three Runs In Loss To Mariners
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed three runs across five innings to take the loss on Wednesday versus Seattle. Irvin was not effective in this one as he allowed seven hits and three walks while only picking up three strikeouts. The left-hander has his moments this season, but he's not much of a fantasy option as his 16% strikeout rate is the second-lowest among all qualified starters making him a high-risk fantasy option if he's not going deep into games. Irvin is not a recommended start in fantasy next time out in a rematch with these Mariners.

Sun Sep 12 202109:47Cole Irvin Whiffs Eight Rangers In No-Decision Saturday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed two runs across seven innings with eight strikeouts against the Rangers on Saturday. Unfortunately for Irvin, the bullpen couldn't hold a four-run lead to secure the win, but it was an encouraging outing from the young lefty. Prior to this outing, Irvin had not completed the fifth inning in three-straight starts as he has struggled along with the rest of the freefalling A's ball club. Despite this strong start, Irvin remains a risky fantasy option as his 16.1% strikeout rate is among the lowest in the Majors. The lack of strikeouts makes him hard to trust in fantasy, even with another good matchup versus the Angels up next.

Sun Sep 5 202115:35Cole Irvin Delivers Shortest Start Of Career On Sunday At Toronto
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin didn't have it on Sunday as he allowed seven earned runs across just 2 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays. Irvin allowed eight hits as he didn't escape the third inning in the shortest start of his career. The 27-year-old lefty got off to a nice start to the season, but he's struggled mightily lately as he's got an 8.14 ERA across his last five starts. If Irvin is not preventing runs then he has little use in fantasy as he won't help with strikeouts; his 15.6% strikeout rate is the second-lowest rate among all qualified starters. Irvin is not a recommended start in fantasy despite a decent matchup with the Rangers next time out.

Mon Aug 30 202113:48Cole Irvin Scheduled To Start On Tuesday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin (hip) is listed as Tuesday's starter versus the Detroit Tigers. After tossing three innings his previous start on Tuesday, Irvin left the game with minor hip discomfort. Irvin has been having a solid season for the Athletics, but his low strikeout upside has limited his value for fantasy managers. The lefty has made 25 starts this year and is 9-12 with 3.68 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings. His matchup on Tuesday is favorable, but most of value should come as a streamer.

Tue Aug 24 202120:52Cole Irvin Exits Tuesday’s Start Early With Hip Injury
Oakland Athletics pitcher Cole Irvin (hip) exited Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners due to a hip issue. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while failing to record a strikeout before exiting after 66 pitches. He was tagged with his 12th loss of the season. The severity of Irvin's injury is unknown at this time, and he's considered day-to-day. The southpaw owns a 3.68 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts over 144 1/3 innings in 2021. Irvin is scheduled to face the Detroit Tigers early next week if he can make his start. Stay tuned for more updates.

Thu Aug 19 202118:25Cole Irvin Battles For Ninth Win On Thursday At Chicago
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin wasn't at his best on Thursday afternoon, but he battled through six innings to earn his ninth win of the season. Irvin had traffic on the bases all day as he surrendered seven hits and four walks, but he limited a good White Sox lineup to just three runs and was picked up by his offense to earn the victory. Irvin only had one strikeout on the day and his K-rate for the season is only 16 percent. That severely limits his fantasy upside and Irvin should only be deployed when he has a good matchup. Luckily for fantasy managers, he's facing the Mariners in Oakland next time out.

Sun Aug 8 202110:08Cole Irvin Collects Eighth Win On Saturday Versus Texas
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Cole Irvin allowed two runs across seven strong innings to pick up his eighth win of the season Saturday versus the Rangers. Irvin got in trouble early as he allowed a single and a two-run homer to trail 2-0 only three batters into the game. That was all Texas could muster, however, as the left-hander dominated after that as the A's cruised to victory. Irvin pitches deep into games and provides strong ratios like his 3.45 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, which makes him a solid fantasy contributor despite not picking up many strikeouts. He can be started in fantasy in his next outing, a good matchup at Cleveland.
