Tue Mar 6 201211:55Guillen announces retirement in Mariners camp
Carlos Guillen has announced his retirement.
The news comes as a bit of a shock. Guillen agreed to a minor league contract this past winter with the Mariners and had a good chance of claiming a backup infield job this spring in camp. He finishes with 1,331 career hits, 124 career homers and a .285/.355/.443 career batting line. The 36-year-old played for only the Mariners and Tigers during his 14-year major league career.

Wed Feb 1 201214:51Mariners sign Carlos Guillen to minors deal
Mariners signed INF Carlos Guillen to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite. Guillen, who previously played with Seattle from 1998-2003, batted just .232/.265/.368 with three homers, 13 RBI and a .633 OPS over 102 plate appearances last season with the Tigers. The 36-year-old can't be counted on as an everyday player anymore, but the switch-hitter could be a decent bat off the bench.

Mon Dec 5 201116:26Five teams interested in Carlos Guillen
Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes Los Angeles reports that the Royals, Marlins, Twins, Athletics, and Mariners are interested in free agent infielder Carlos Guillen.
Guillen batted just .232/.265/.368 over 102 plate appearances this past season for the Tigers and probably can't be counted on for an everyday role at this point with his checkered injury past. The 36-year-old could be a low-risk, potentially moderate reward if he did manage to stay healthy, though.

Tue Nov 29 201114:36Miami interested in free agent Carlos Guillen
According to FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi, the Marlins have free agent interest in Carlos Guillen.
Guillen has struggled to stay healthy in recent years and batted just .232/.265/.368 over 102 plate appearances this past season for Detroit. But the Marlins are likely viewing him as a decent high-risk, high-reward option for an infield utility role. The Tigers aren't interested in re-signing him.

Tue Nov 1 201115:02Guillen, Ordonez unlikely to return in 2012
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski acknowledged Tuesday that Carlos Guillen is unlikely to return next season.
Guillen batted just .232/.265/.368 in 102 plate appearances this year while earning $13 million. The Tigers are surely excited to have his contract off the books. Magglio Ordonez is also unlikely to return.

Sun Oct 9 201109:17Carlos Guillen still dealing with calf injury
Danny Worth, and not Carlos Guillen, replaced Delmon Young (oblique) on the Tigers' ALCS roster because Guillen is still not over his right calf injury.
"I think he's going to play all week (in the Florida Instructional League), but that was a non-factor," said manager Jim Leyland. "We were pretty sure he wasn't going to be ready for this series." There might be an outside chance Guillen could be ready for a potential World Series berth, but it's probably safe to rule him out for the year. The injury-prone 36-year-old will be a free agent this offseason.

Wed Sep 28 201121:08Carlos Guillen won't be on ALDS roster
Carlos Guillen (calf) will not be on the Tigers' ALDS roster.
Guillen will travel to Florida to rehab his strained right calf and hopes to feel good enough to join the team for a possible ALCS berth. But, even if he's healthy enough, it's no guarantee he'd be added to the roster. Guillen has already started jogging and will progress with a running program from there.

Mon Sep 26 201117:48Carlos Guillen (calf) likely out for ALDS
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that Carlos Guillen (calf) will likely miss the ALDS.
Guillen hasn't played since straining his right calf while fielding a ground ball on September 18. Things could change if he makes progress this week, but Ramon Santiago and Ryan Raburn figure to get most of the playing time at second base during the ALDS.

Sun Sep 18 201117:44Guillen suffer right calf strain, year over?
Carlos Guillen suffered a right calf strain in the fourth inning and left Sunday's game against the A's.
Jemile Weeks hit a slow grounder back Justin Verlander. Guillen took a few steps in to back up Verlander and came up lame. He was able to walk slowly off the field without assistance. Guillen underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee last year and has been limited to 95 at-bats this season. This was just his third start since he was activated from the DL on September 1. Ryan Raburn and Ramon Santiago will share at-bats at second base, possibly through the post-season if Guillen is done for the year.

Wed Sep 14 201117:29Carlos Guillen homers, knocks in winning run
Carlos Guillen homered in the second and delivered a go-ahead single in the 10th as the Tigers rallied to beat the White Sox 6-5 on Wednesday.
That's 12 in a row from the Tigers, who were down 5-2 in the ninth before coming back and beating the White Sox for the 13th time in 18 games this season. Detroit now has an outside chance of overtaking the Yankees for home-field advantage in the AL. The Tigers are 87-62, while the Bombers are 90-57. Guillen's big game came in just his second start of the month. It's unclear whether he has a realistic chance of entering the postseason as the team's primary second baseman.

Sun Aug 14 201109:27Carlos Guillen lands on DL with wrist injury
Tigers placed 2B Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 13, with a sore left wrist.
Guillen had been with the Tigers for nearly a month, so it was about time for the injury-prone infielder to come down with another ailment. It's not clear when the veteran suffered the injury or how long he'll be out. Will Rhymes has been promoted to take his spot on the roster and should get some starts at second base, along with Ryan Raburn and Ramon Santiago.

Sun Jul 31 201116:00Guillen homers, mars no-hitter
Carlos Guillen hit a solo home run in Detroit's 3-2 win over the Angels on Sunday.
It was no ordinary at-bat, though. With Justin Verlander no-hitting the Angels through seven and the Tigers nursing a 2-0 lead, Guillen crushed a Jered Weaver pitch to deep right with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. He then decided to admire his bomb for a good three or four seconds before flipping his bat. The (unfortunate) display sent Weaver into a meltdown, causing home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt to issue warnings to both teams. Weaver paid no attention, however, and sent a fastball buzzing over Alex Avila's head the very next pitch. He was immediately ejected, leading to a protracted delay as Hisanori Takahashi warmed up. Verlander never really got into a rhythm in the eighth, losing his no-no with two outs and letting two runs cross the plate. He may have some words for Guillen this afternoon.

Sat Jul 30 201101:20Guillen drives in four in win over Angels
Carlos Guillen went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored in a win over the Angels on Friday night.
Victor Martinez also drove in four runs. Guillen had a two-run triple in the sixth, an RBI double in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. He is now batting .295 (13-for-44) with one home run and 10 RBI since returning from the disabled list. He is a pretty poor bet to stay healthy playing second base on a regular basis, but is worth considering as a middle infield option in mixed leagues.
