Sun Jun 3 201216:50Magglio Ordonez officially retires
Magglio Ordonez retired.
Mags was honored in a ceremony prior to Sunday's series finale against the Yankees. The 38-year-old said in February that he was only interested in signing a major league contract, but he failed to draw much interest after hitting just .252/.303/.331 with five home runs and 32 RBI last season and re-fracturing his right ankle during the ALCS. One of the best right-handed hitters of his generation, Ordonez finished his career with .309/.369/.502 lifetime batting line to go along with 2,156 hits, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI.

Magglio Ordonez will announce his retirement Sunday at Comerica Park.
The Tigers will honor him in a ceremony prior to Sunday's series finale against the Yankees. The 38-year-old hinted at retirement earlier this spring, so the decision doesn't come as a big surprise. One of the best right-handed hitters of his generation, Ordonez will end his career with .309/.369/.502 lifetime batting line to go along with 2,156 hits, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI.

Mon Mar 26 201219:59Magglio Ordonez leaning toward retirement
Magglio Ordonez indicated on his Twitter account Monday that he is leaning toward retirement.
"Estoy muy search de mi retiro," was Ordonez's message, which translates to, "I am very close to my retirement." The 38-year-old said in February that he was only interested in signing a major league contract, but he failed to draw much interest after hitting just .252/.303/.331 with five home runs and 32 RBI last season and re-fracturing his right ankle during the ALCS. Ordonez owns a .309/.369/.502 lifetime batting line to go along with 2,156 hits, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI.

Wed Feb 15 201217:03Ordonez not interested in minor league deal
Magglio Ordonez said Wednesday that he is not interested in signing a minor league contract.
That could change if Ordonez is unable to attract a major league contract offer by the start of spring training. He's drawn interest from the A's, but it's doubtful they'll offer him a guaranteed roster spot. Ordonez, 38, batted just .252/.303/.331 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 92 regular-season games last season for the Tigers.

Sat Feb 4 201215:27Atheltics interested in Magglio Ordonez
MLB Network's Peter Gammons reports the Athletics are evaluating Magglio Ordonez for a spring tryout.
Ordonez has reportedly made "consistent progress" in his recovery from ankle surgery and expects to play in 2012 despite being active for just 92 games last season. If he signs with the Athletics, it would only be on a minor league contract.

Sun Jan 22 201214:35Market for Ordonez to pick up soon?
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com anticipates that the market for Magglio Ordonez (ankle) will pick up once he's cleared for full activity, which could happen in two weeks.
Morosi had a report on Maggs earlier this month that detailed the veteran's "consistent progress" in his recovery from right ankle surgery. Ordonez, who will turn 38 next week, fully intends to play in 2012 despite an injury-plagued, disappointing 2011 season. It remains to be seen if he'll be able to net a guaranteed deal or if he'll have to settle for a minor league contract.

Fri Jan 13 201213:43Magglio Ordonez making consistent progress
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Magglio Ordonez has made "consistent progress" in his recovery from right ankle surgery and still intends to play in 2012.
Ordonez no longer requires the use of a walking boot and has started taking swings in a batting cage. "He's hitting the ball hard," said Radhi Muhammad, founder and head performance coach at 440 Fitness in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Ordonez is training. "The bat sounds good." Muhammad also added that Maggs would have formal workouts for teams around the start of spring training. He likely wouldn't need more than a few weeks to be ready for the season, but it's obviously a big question whether Ordonez could stay healthy and produce in 2012.

Sun Nov 6 201123:35Ordonez and Guillen plan to return in 2012
Tiger free agents Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen both plan on playing in 2012.
Guillen confided his plans to MLB.com and also mentioned that he had spoken to Ordonez, who told him he also planned to continue his career. Ordonez underwent surgery on his fractured right ankle last week, but apparently plans to rehab the injury in hopes of securing another contract. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has said that Guillen is unlikely to return next season and Detroit's front office is also reportedly ready to move on from Ordonez. Guillen posted an anemic .232/.265/.368 line in 102 plate appearances this past year while earning $13 million. The 37-year-old Ordonez batted just .252/.303/.331 during 92 regular-season games. Mags has produced a .309/.369/.502 line, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI in 7,742 plate appearances over 15 seasons between the White Sox and Tigers.

Tue Nov 1 201115:05Tigers unlikely to re-sign Magglio Ordonez
The Tigers are unlikely to re-sign Magglio Ordonez.
Ordonez told reporters near the end of the Tigers' postseason run that he is hoping to continue his career. But the Detroit front office is ready to move on from the 37-year-old outfielder, who batted just .252/.303/.331 during 92 regular-season games.

Sun Oct 16 201110:36Leyland not sure where Maggs was
Magglio Ordonez (ankle) did not accompany the Tigers on the flight to Texas for Game 6 of the ALCS, and manager Jim Leyland isn't sure why.
"I don't know where he is," Leyland said. "He didn't come on the plane." It sounds like Leyland was expecting Ordonez to show up, only the outfielder didn't. It's a little bizarre but probably just a miscommunication between Maggs and the team. Ordonez's postseason ended after he re-broke his right ankle early on in the ALCS. The 37-year-old is expected to continue his career.

Wed Oct 12 201119:23Report: Ordonez not ready to retire just yet
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Magglio Ordonez wants to continue playing and the "initial belief" is that the re-break of his right ankle won't force him to retire.
The 37-year-old outfielder never totally recovered from breaking his ankle late last year, and he broke it again last week, ending his season. Ordonez is likely to require offseason surgery, and given his .255/.303/.331 batting line this season, he's unlikely to receive much interest on the open market. It sounds like he's not ready to hang up his cleats yet, though.

Mon Oct 10 201115:31Magglio Ordonez likely needs ankle surgery
Magglio Ordonez is likely to require surgery to repair his broken right ankle.
Ordonez was removed from the Tigers' ALCS roster on Monday morning. He could officially retire if the surgery threatens his ability to play in 2012. The 37-year-old outfielder has a .309/.369/.502 career batting line, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI in 7,742 total plate appearances.

Sun Oct 9 201121:20OF Ordonez (broken ankle) to get examined
Magglio Ordonez (broken ankle) will be examined by a doctor before deciding on retirement.
Ordonez re-broke his right ankle and was removed from the ALCS roster on Sunday. He's done for the year. The 37-year-old has produced a .309/.369/.502 line, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBI in 7,742 plate appearances over 15 seasons between the White Sox and Tigers.

Sun Oct 9 201116:44Report: OF Ordonez breaks right ankle again
Magglio Ordonez broke his right ankle again, reports Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.
Ordonez was removed from the ALCS roster earlier in the day. The 37-year-old is done for the season and quite possibly will call it a career. He talked about retirement during the regular season and his latest setback with the problematic right ankle could cement his decision. If Maggs is indeed done, he will finish his 15-year career spread between the White Sox and Tigers with a .309/.369/.502 slash line, 294 homers and 1,236 RBI in 7,742 plate appearances.

Sun Oct 9 201115:54Ordonez (ankle) removed from ALCS roster
Magglio Ordonez has been removed from the ALCS roster due to ongoing issues with his surgically-repaired right ankle.
It's a tough blow for a Tigers team that's already without Delmon Young. Manager Jim Leyland said the ankle is "killing" Maggs. Ordonez had surgery on the ankle late last year, and he hasn't been able to totally shake the soreness since. The 37-year-old will be ineligible to play in a potential World Series berth for the Tigers. He admitted to considering retirement earlier this season, so it's certainly possible that he's taken his last MLB at-bat. The Tigers have not announced who will replace Maggs on the ALCS roster.

Sun Oct 2 201121:46Ordonez considered retiring during season
Magglio Ordonez considered retiring earlier this season.
"I almost hung it up," Ordonez said. Ordonez missed a full month over the summer with right ankle weakness and his bat went silent when he returned. The same ankle required surgery when he broke it in July 2010. "When I was playing, I didn't enjoy the game," Ordonez said. The 37-year-old talked it over with his family and decided to keep playing. He was hitting .224 on August 12. Since that time, he's hit .365 in 21 games. Ordonez went 3-for-3 with a run scored during Sunday's Game Two victory over the Yankees.

Thu Sep 1 201117:15Magglio Ordonez homers, doubles twice
Magglio Ordonez homered, doubled twice, knocked in three runs and stole a base Thursday against the Royals.
Taking advantage of Brennan Boesch's injury, Ordonez has put together a little seven-game hitting streak, though he didn't have an extra-base hit during the streak until collecting three today. The Tigers will almost certainly give him another start Friday against left-hander John Danks to see if he can keep it going.

Mon Aug 15 201116:13Ordonez headed to the bench in Detroit
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that Delmon Young, Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch will be his regular outfield moving forward.
Ordonez is in the starting lineup Monday, but he'll move into a part-time role once Boesch (thumb) is ready to return. The 37-year-old is batting just .223/.280/.295 with four home runs and 23 RBI over 289 plate appearances this season and is no longer relevant in most fantasy leagues.

Mon Aug 15 201109:14Ordonez goes 0-for-5, continues struggles
Magglio Ordonez went 0-for-5 in Sunday's loss and is now 6-for-39 in the month of August.
Ordonez is batting just .223/.280/.295 with four home runs and 23 RBI in 73 games this season. He's going to start losing playing time if the struggles persist. "We've got a nice complement of players, so I think we're fine," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "Magglio's throwing in his hits. I think there's certain type pitchers I'll rest him against, and certain type of pitchers I'll play him against."

Wed Jul 20 201122:34Maggs has three-hit night
Magglio Ordonez went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Detroit's loss to the A's on Wednesday.
Maggs has now hit in eight straight games, and is batting .341 in the month of July. If he's wallowing on the waiver wire in your deeper mixed league, he's the definition of a low-risk, high-reward flier.
