Tue Feb 2000:33Jeremy Pena Bringing Quieter Batting Stance To 2024
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena showcased a more efficient batting stance in Monday's live batting practice, per the Athletic's Chandler Rome. The changes include less pre-pitch bat movement and a more subtle front-leg load. Manager Joe Espada expressed his pleasure in Pena's changes, saying he is "hitting the ball in the air more with power". Power was an issue for the 26-year-old last season, as he slashed .263/.324/.381 with 10 home runs, 81 runs scored, 52 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. The batting average improvements were welcome and Pena showed he could hit for some power in his rookie season when he hit 22 HR. His fantasy value could take an uptick in 2024 if he can maintain his BA gains while also adjusting to hit for more power.

Tue Oct 10 202301:13Jeremy Pena Works Out Monday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena was on the field on Monday during the team's off day and took ground balls at the team's workout at Target Field. Pena appeared to hit first base gingerly while running out the final out in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The fact that he was on the field working out a day later suggests that the 26-year-old should be fine to start in Game 3 of the ALDS in Minnesota on Tuesday. In the first two contests against the Twins, Pena has gone 3-for-8 with a double, and a strikeout. In 15 postseason games in his career now, Pena has hit .348 (23-for-66) with four homers, six doubles, eight RBI and 12 runs scored in 69 plate appearances.

Tue Jul 18 202316:39Jeremy Pena Good To Go To Return To Lineup
Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker said that shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) is good to go to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies and right-hander Jake Bird. Pena suffered from cramping in his hamstring on Saturday and didn't play on Sunday, but he's back in there for fantasy managers after the team had an off day on Monday. Fantasy managers are going to want to get Pena back in their starting lineups, especially for a series at hitter-friendly Coors Field this week. The 25-year-old has played in only seven games in the month of July and is hitting 5-for-27 (.185) with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored, so hopefully a trip to Coors Field will get him right offensively.

Sun Jul 16 202316:35Jeremy Pena Out Of The Lineup Sunday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) is out of Sunday's lineup against the Angels. The 25-year-old left Saturday's game due to injury, with skipper Dusty Baker confirming a hamstring issue. Pena, hitting .241 with 10 homers, 33 RBI, 43 runs, and eight stolen bases this season, is hoping to avoid a trip to the IL. But in the meantime, Grae Kessinger will fill the void and face Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson for the first time in his career.

Sun Jul 16 202309:49Jeremy Pena Suffers Hamstring Injury On Saturday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (hamstring) came out of Saturday's eventual 13-12 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels due to a right hamstring injury. The 25-year-old was checked by a trainer during his 10th-inning at-bat, but was able to finish it, striking out. Pena was then spelled defensively at short in the next frame by Grae Kessinger, who ended up committing a key fielding mistake which resulted in a Halos walk-off triumph. Pena should be deemed day-to-day with Astros skipper Dusty Baker hopeful he was forced from this one with cramps. With an off day on Monday, the speedy Pena could possibly be out of Sunday's lineup for the series finale in Anaheim. Fantasy managers will have to check back for another update on his status for that one.

Sun Jul 16 202300:56Jeremy Pena Exits On Saturday Due To Injury
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (undisclosed) was injured in Saturday's loss to the Angels. He played nearly the entire game, accruing one hit in six at-bats while striking out twice. However, Pena was seemingly bothered by something, possibly a leg issue, during his last plate appearance in the top of the 10th inning. The 28-year-old has been banged up a few times this season, so if anything, he may miss a game or two. At any rate, there should be an update on Pena's condition ahead of Sunday's series finale with LA.

Wed Jul 5 202312:12Jeremy Pena Returns To Face Rockies
As expected, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) is back in the team's starting lineup against right-hander Chase Anderson and the visiting Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Pena is starting at shortstop and is batting eighth in the lineup. The 25-year-old developed stiffness in his neck at the end of last week and missed five straight games, but he's back in there now to close out the first half of the 2023 season. He'll be looking to extend his hitting streak to six games now that he's back. During his five-game streak, Pena has gone 6-for-23 (.261) with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Fantasy managers will want to get the second-year shortstop back in their starting lineups in season-long leagues in a solid matchup.

Tue Jul 4 202316:29Jeremy Pena Expected To Return Wednesday
Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker said that shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) should be able to return to the starting lineup on Wednesday against the visiting Colorado Rockies. Pena missed his fifth straight game on the Fourth of July on Tuesday while dealing with neck stiffness, but it hasn't been a serious issue all along. Mauricio Dubon continues to see regular playing time in Houston's lineup between injuries to Pena and second baseman Jose Altuve (undisclosed). Fantasy managers should have Pena available again on Wednesday, when he'll be looking to extend his current hitting streak to a modest six games. During his five-game streak, he's gone 6-for-23 (.261) with a homer, three RBI and four runs scored.

Tue Jul 4 202312:29Jeremy Pena Still Absent Tuesday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) remains out of the lineup on Tuesday against the visiting Colorado Rockies. Pena will miss his fifth straight game due to neck tightness that he developed late last week. At this point, an injured-list stint heading into next week's All-Star break wouldn't be a big surprise. Mauricio Dubon will man the 6 yet again on Tuesday and hit second against Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland. The good news is that the 25-year-old Pena was seen fielding ground balls on Monday, so perhaps he's turning a corner with his injury. Pena remains day-to-day for now. He's currently sporting a .247/.302/.399 slash line on the season with nine home runs, 16 doubles, a triple, 30 RBI, eight stolen bases and 40 runs scored in 76 games in his second major-league season.

Mon Jul 3 202312:00Jeremy Pena Still Out Monday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) remains out of the starting lineup on Monday against the division-rival Texas Rangers. Mauricio Dubon will get the start at the 6 and hit second in the batting order against Rangers left-hander Martin Perez. Pena has now missed the last four games due to neck tightness, and if he's unable to return soon, the Astros are going to have to consider putting him on the injured list heading into the All-Star break. Before waking up with a tight neck at the end of last week, Pena was on a modest five-game hitting streak, going 6-for-23 (.261) with a homer, three RBI and four runs scored. The 25-year-old Dominican is batting .247 (73-for-296) overall with nine homers, 30 RBI, eight steals and 40 runs on the year.

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) is absent from the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Texas Rangers. Sat Jul 1 202313:25Jeremy Pena Sitting Out Again On Saturday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) is not in the lineup on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. Pena sat out Friday's contest as well due to neck stiffness so apparently the issue is still bothering him. Mauricio Dubon is starting at shortstop in his place and batting sixth against Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi. Pena should be considered day-to-day for now. The 25-year-old is slashing .250/.305/.402 with nine home runs, 30 RBI, and eight stolen bases over 296 at-bats on the year.

Fri Jun 30 202318:47Jeremy Pena Out On Friday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (neck) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Texas Rangers. Manager Dusty Baker said Pena woke up with neck stiffness, so they'll hold him out of the game as a precaution. That being said, this appears to be a day-to-day issue, so Pena should avoid a trip to the injured list. Mauricio Dubon is covering shortstop and batting sixth versus right-hander Jon Gray on Friday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups with Pena sidelined.

Thu Jun 15 202316:18Jeremy Pena Back In Lineup Thursday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (illness) is back at shortstop and is hitting sixth in the lineup on Thursday against Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Pena was under the weather and missed the team's last three games, but he'll return for fantasy managers to face the Nationals on Thursday. He has recorded five hits in his last two games and is hitting .256 (10-for-39) with three doubles, no home runs and no RBI so far in nine games in June. The 25-year-old really impressed in his rookie season in 2022 and has for the most part continued to play well this year, but he hasn't homered since May 28. Overall, he's hitting .252 (62-for-246) with 16 doubles, a triple, eight homers, 26 RBI and six stolen bases in 63 games.

Wed Jun 14 202316:05Jeremy Pena Still Out Wednesday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (illness) remains out of the lineup on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. It's the third straight missed game for Pena due to the illness, but fantasy managers should continue to treat him as day-to-day until we know more about his condition. Hopefully, he'll be able to return for the series finale against the Nats on Thursday. Mauricio Dubon will start at the 6 again and hit leadoff on Wednesday against Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray. Dubon has been crucial to the Astros' success in 2023 while filling in at the keystone to begin the year when Jose Altuve was recovering from a fractured thumb, and he's hitting a strong .297 (63-for-212) with 13 doubles, a triple, three homers, 15 RBI and five stolen bases on the year in 52 games.

Tue Jun 13 202316:21Jeremy Pena Out Again Tuesday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena (illness) is out of the starting lineup again on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals. Pena sat out on Sunday with an illness and apparently is still under the weather despite an off day on Monday. Hopefully, he'll be able to return to Wednesday's lineup. The 25-year-old Dominican has contributed modestly across the board for fantasy managers this year, hitting .252 (62-for-246) with 16 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 26 RBI, six stolen bases and 36 runs scored in 268 plate appearances and 63 games in his second major-league season. Mauricio Dubon is starting at shortstop on Tuesday and is batting leadoff against Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin. Dubon will be a nice DFS play while hitting in the top spot in Houston's batting order.

Sun Jun 11 202310:45Jose Altuve And Jeremy Pena Out Of Sunday’s Lineup
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve and shortstop Jeremy Pena are not in Sunday's lineup against the Cleveland Guardians. It appears to a maintenance day for the two infielders with a fairly early 12:40 p.m. first-pitch time. Corey Julks makes for a solid plug-and-play DFS option while functioning as the second batter for this one and hitting .278 with four stolen bases over the last week of action. Expect the Astros lineup to feature the regulars for Tuesday's series opener versus the Washington Nationals. Altuve is slashing .262/.348/.443 with two homers, six RBI, and two stolen bases over 61 at-bats since his May 19 IL activation. Pena is hitting .252 with a .730 OPS and eight big flies, 26 RBI, plus six swipes across 246 at-bats this campaign.

Wed Jun 7 202317:11Jeremy Pena Resting Against Toronto
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is getting a day of rest on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Pena could use a day off after going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to Toronto. It was Pena's second hitless game of the month, but he's otherwise gone 6-for-25 (.240) with a double, two walks and nine strikeouts to begin June in six contests. In his second major-league campaign, the 25-year-old Dominican shortstop is batting .250 (58-for-232) with 14 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 26 RBI, six stolen bases and 35 runs scored in 253 plate appearances and 60 games. Mauricio Dubon is starting at the 6 and hitting leadoff on Wednesday against Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. Dubon has earned plenty of playing time in 2023 by hitting .294 (55-for-187) with two homers, 11 RBI and three steals.

Sun May 28 202310:02Jeremy Pena Enters No. 2 Lineup Spot, Launches Homer
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and a double in a 6-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday. The 25-year-old moved up to the second spot in the lineup for this one and yielded positive results with the promotion. Pena snapped a 21-game homer-less drought after undergoing a power surge to end April. Perhaps this cues the waning moments of the 2022 World Series MVP's fantasy buy-low window, but his Statcast rankings don't support this case. Pena should see his fantasy value bolstered nonetheless if his stay in the two-hole sticks going forward. The speedy infielder is slashing a disappointing .247/.290/.428 following his incredible postseason run.

Sat Apr 8 202311:34Jeremy Pena Batting Sixth On Saturday
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena will hit sixth versus Joe Ryan and the Twins on Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old is batting .171 with six hits, four RBI, and one homer in 35 at-bats this season. However, he's also struck out 10 times. Pena has gone 1-for-2 against Ryan during his career, so a change could be beneficial. Either way, fantasy managers are hoping the move will work in their favor. Chas McCormick will get a crack at the leadoff spot.
