Wed Mar 623:38Nick Madrigal Undergoes MRI, Cubs Not Overly Concerned
Chicago Cubs third baseman Nick Madrigal (hamstring) underwent an MRI on Wednesday, manager Craig Counsell told Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. Counsell seemed to downplay the injury, suggesting that Madrigal's MRI was mainly precautionary and that he remains in good shape. It's worth noting that Madrigal spent time on the 60-day injured list last year due to a right hamstring strain, so the Cubs will be a little extra cautious with that in mind. Nevertheless, it doesn't sound like Madrigal is at risk of missing any regular season action.

Wed Feb 2823:20Nick Madrigal In Line For Bench Role
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal provides the Cubs with an elite contact-based bat and can fit as a backup at second and third base. Nico Hoerner is set to be the club's primary second baseman, while manager Craig Counsell has made it clear that he wants to take a long look at Christopher Morel at the corner, given his athleticism and offensive upside. In addition to Madrigal, Patrick Wisdom and Miles Mastrobuoni give the Cubs some other bench options. The 26-year-old Madrigal, a former first-round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2018 out of Oregon State, has hit .280 in his four big-league seasons, but it's come with only four home runs, 67 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 234 games. Madrigal has limited NL-only fantasy upside as a bench/utility option for the Cubbies.

Thu Jan 1114:55Nick Madrigal, Cubs Settle At $1.81 Million
The Chicago Cubs and infielder Nick Madrigal have settled on a one-year, $1.81 million deal to avoid arbitration. The 26-year-old was hampered by a hamstring injury in the 2023 season but reportedly entered the offseason with no physical restrictions. Despite excellent contact skills and bat control, Madrigal's production at the plate has cratered over the last two seasons. He hit a decent .263 in 2023 but slugged just a pair of home runs and walked in only 3.4% of his plate appearances a season ago. He struck out in only 8.2% of his 294 plate appearances but his 83 wRC+ at the plate represented production 17% below the league average after posting a 71 wRC+ in 59 games in 2022. His fantasy baseball value is minimal as a result.

Tue Sep 26 202322:02Nick Madrigal Participates In Baseball Activities Tuesday
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) did some fielding work on Tuesday before his club's game against the Atlanta Braves. The 26-year-old was placed on the injured list on September 19 after suffering a right hamstring strain. Madrigal's likely done for the rest of the regular season, but manager David Ross thinks he could make an appearance in the postseason if Chicago's still playing in October. The former top prospect has disappointed with the Cubs, and he slashed just .263/.311/.352 with two homers, 34 runs, 28 RBI, and 10 steals over 92 games this year.

Sun Sep 17 202319:03Nick Madrigal Out Sunday With Injury
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring issue and will sit out Sunday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks after he left Saturday's contest early, according to MLB.com. The 26-year-old has played in just 151 games over the last two seasons due to a multitude of injuries. Over 92 games this season, Madrigal owns a .263/.311/.352 slash line with two home runs, 34 runs, 28 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. The former first-round pick hasn't lived up to the hype he had as a prospect, and fantasy managers should only roster him in very deep formats. Stay tuned for more updates.

Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) has been activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 26-year-old has been sidelined since early June due to a right hamstring strain. He missed time during his minor league rehab assignment as well due to a back issue. Madrigal will cover third base and bat ninth versus right-hander Adam Wainwright on Saturday. In a corresponding move, infielder Miles Mastrobuoni has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Thu Jul 20 202308:54Nick Madrigal "Ahead Of Schedule"
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) ran and took batting practice prior to Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals, according to MLB.com. Manager David Ross told reporters that the 26-year-old is "ahead of schedule" and is just about ready to begin a rehab assignment, meaning he could return this month. Madrigal has been out of action since straining his right hamstring in early July. Over 53 games before the injury, the former top prospect was slashing .278/.335/.364 with one home run, 23 runs, 17 RBI, and seven steals. He doesn't do enough in standard leagues to justify holding onto unless there's enough room on the injured list.

Tue Jul 4 202314:52Nick Madrigal Goes On Injured List, Patrick Wisdom Activated
The Chicago Cubs placed infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a right-hamstring strain and activated infielder Patrick Wisdom (wrist) from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Cubs also optioned pitcher Hayden Wesneski to Triple-A Iowa selected the contract of pitcher Daniel Palencia and moved reliever Brad Boxberger (forearm) to the 60-day IL. Madrigal will miss the end of the first half of the season after injuring his hamstring on Monday. He's hit a decent .278 (42-for-151) and has seven stolen bases in limited time, but he also has just one homer and 17 RBI. Wisdom has really cooled off from earlier in the year. He has 14 homers in 56 games but is hitting under .200 and has only two hits in his last 33 at-bats over 11 games dating back to May 29.

Mon Jul 3 202316:25Nick Madrigal Removed Early On Monday
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal (hamstring) was forced to exit early during Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Madrigal suffered a hamstring injury when he collided into the wall in foul territory. He exited the game with what the team is calling right hamstring tightness. The assumption is that Madrigal will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the injury. Fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if he lands on the injured list. Although, Madrigal might not miss too many games with the All-Star break right around the corner.

Sat Jun 17 202312:37Nick Madrigal Not In Saturday's Lineup
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal will start on the pine for Saturday's contest against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. It appears to just be a normal day of rest for Madrigal, who has gone 5-for-15 with two RBI in his last five games. The 26-year-old hasn't really panned out in the big leagues after the Chicago White Sox took him fourth overall in the 2018 draft out of Oregon State. He's spent some time in the minors this year and has played in just 41 games for the Cubbies, hitting a mediocre .248 (28-for-113) with three doubles, a triple, no home runs, 11 RBI, three steals and 15 runs scored in 125 trips to the plate. Madrigal is not a mixed-league fantasy asset. Miles Mastrobuoni is starting at the hot corner Saturday and is hitting in the nine-hole against Orioles right-hander Kyle Gibson.

Fri Jun 9 202323:40Cubs Recall Nick Madrigal Friday
The Chicago Cubs recalled infielder Nick Madrigal from Triple-A Iowa on Friday and optioned infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to Iowa in a corresponding move. In his return to the big leagues, the Cubs gave Madrigal the start at second base while putting him in the leadoff spot on Friday against the San Francisco Giants. The 26-year-old tore up Triple-A pitching to the tune of a .488 average in 41 at-bats, but he was hitting a lackluster .247 (23-for-93) with three doubles, a triple, no home runs, nine RBI and 13 runs scored in 34 games. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues should still leave Madrigal to the waiver wire. He's unlikely to be a lineup regular, and he has only two home runs and eight stolen bases in 176 career big-league games.

Thu May 25 202316:14Nick Madrigal Optioned To Triple-A
The Chicago Cubs optioned second baseman Nick Madrigal to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday to make room on the active roster for starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder), who is coming off the injured list to make his season debut on Thursday against the New York Mets. Madrigal will be able to play every day in the minors after serving in more of a bench role at the major-league level of late. The 26-year-old had seen action in 34 games and was hitting .247 (23-for-93) with three doubles, a triple, no home runs, nine RBI, two stolen bases and 13 runs scored for the Cubbies. Unless an injury to one of Chicago's infielders opens up more playing time, Madrigal won't have much fantasy value.

Wed May 10 202318:49Nick Madrigal Leading Off Again Wednesday
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nick Madrigal will hit first again on Wednesday versus the Cardinals, as he did in his last game on Tuesday. With Nico Hoerner still day-to-day with a hamstring injury, Madrigal checks in as an advantageous DFS option at the minimum price on FanDuel. The 26-year-old right-hander does battle against southpaw Jordan Montgomery, and Madrigal is hitting .308 in 26 at-bats opposing lefties this year. Madrigal went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in his previous game. The contact hitter should retain decent streaming value for run-scoring and batting average while Hoerner is sidelined.

Fri Apr 21 202312:35Nick Madrigal Starting At Third Base Friday
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal is getting the start on Friday at third base and is hitting ninth in the batting order against left-hander Julio Urias and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Madrigal hasn't been playing every day for the Cubs yet in 2023, but when he's gotten his chances, he has been hitting. In his first 33 plate appearances over 13 games, the 26-year-old has 10 hits in 31 at-bats (.323) with two doubles, four RBI, two stolen bases and four runs scored. However, despite the nice start, he's a tough sell in DFS lineups in the nine-hole against a tough left-hander in Urias.

Sat Apr 1 202311:32Nick Madrigal In, Patrick Wisdom Out Saturday
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal is making his first start of the 2023 season on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers and right-hander Brandon Woodruff. Madrigal is starting at third base and hitting eighth, while Patrick Wisdom will start on the bench. The Cubs could have a revolving door at the hot corner this year with Madrigal, Wisdom and Edwin Rios, so it could be a frustrating situation for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. Madrigal was limited to just 59 games in 2022 due to various injuries. The 26-year-old former fourth overall pick by the White Sox can hit, though, and he should be able to bounce back with better health. However, limited playing time is likely to limit his fantasy contributions.

Sat Sep 10 202213:49Nick Madrigal Placed On The Injured List
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nick Madrigal (groin) has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain. The 25-year-old infielder left Friday's game against the Giants early with right groin tightness and that's the ailment that's placed him on the IL. He was hampered by a left groin issue earlier this season as well. Injuries have limited Madrigal to just 59 games played this season where he's put together a .249 batting average to go along with a .587 OPS and seven RBI over 209 at-bats. There's a chance he could make it back for the end of the regular season.

Fri Aug 12 202214:24Nick Madrigal Notches Three Hits
Chicago Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal put together a nice performance during Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The 25-year-old has been limited to 38 games this season due to injuries. He looked healthy and ready to play during the second annual Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa. Madrigal went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases in the win over the Cincinnati Reds. Sadly, Madrigal hasn't brought much to the plate this season, but fantasy managers in dynasty formats should hang onto him.

Sun Jul 10 202219:38Nick Madrigal To Be Re-Evaluated
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nick Madrigal (groin) was forced to exit early during Sunday's rehab game. The young infielder will be re-evaluated after experiencing tightness in his groin. He has been sidelined since mid-June due to a left groin strain. The 25-year-old is hopeful to rejoin the Cubs roster at some point during the second half of the season. Madrigal was hitting .222/.263/.250 with no home runs, and two RBI before landing on the injured list.

Tue May 31 202217:00Nick Madrigal Activated Off Injured List Tuesday
The Chicago Cubs have activated second baseman Nick Madrigal (back) from the 10-day injured list. He will be taking the roster spot of outfielder Seiya Suzuki (finger), who landed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday. Madrigal had been on the injured list since May 10 due to back tightness. Prior to the injury, he slashed .203/.250/.241 over 23 games. The 25-year-old has an impressive .293 batting average over 106 MLB games, but it's come along with only four stolen bases and very little power (two homers, .372 slugging percentage), which makes him tough to roster in most fantasy formats. He is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Andrelton Simmons will be covering the keystone for the game.

Thu May 26 202211:12Nick Madrigal To Start Rehab Assignment Saturday
Chicago Cubs second baseman Nick Madrigal (back) will start a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. Madrigal has been out of action since May 10 with back tightness, but he is getting closer to a return. In 23 games before his injury, he was hitting just .203/.250/.241 with no home runs, two RBI, five runs scored and one stolen base in 84 plate appearances. Still, Madrigal is expected to see most of the playing time at the keystone once he's activated from the injured list, which means Andrelton Simmons will see his playing time reduced once Madrigal is back. Simmons isn't much of a fantasy asset to begin with, as he's hitting just .231 with no homers, four RBI and one steal in only nine games.
