Thu Feb 115:20Matt Vierling, Andy Ibanez, Zach McKinstry To Play Third Base
Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the team is planning for "optionality" at third base in 2024 between Matt Vierling, Andy Ibanez and Zach McKinstry. Prospect Colt Keith, who signed a long-term contract extension last weekend, will play second base and is expected to be an everyday contributor. The 27-year-old Vierling should be the primary third baseman coming out of spring training. The Tigers moved Vierling from the outfield to the hot corner in August of 2023. He's unlikely to be an above-average contributor on offense without hitting for more power. Ibanez, 30, responded to a bad start last year by hitting .294 with 10 homers in his final 87 games. Ibanez, who hits right-handed, and McKinstry set up as natural platoon partners at third base, but McKinstry struggled at the plate in 2023. Prospect Jace Jung could become the team's regular third baseman by the end of the 2024 season.

Mon Jan 821:14Matt Vierling The Current Favorite To Start At Third Base
As of right now, the likely favorite to start at third base on Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers is Matt Vierling, whom the team acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies last offseason. With a weak free-agent market for hitters, the Tigers seem content to let their internal options battle it out while also keeping the runway clear for young hitters like Colt Keith and possibly Jace Jung to make their big-league debuts in 2024. Last year, Detroit's third basemen ranked 28th with a .624 OPS and 27th at minus-0.3 bWAR. Vierling played 35 games at the hot corner in 2023 but had a pedestrian .261 average and 96 OPS+. The Tigers will be hoping he can start elevating and pulling the ball more to dig into more of his power. If the 27-year-old struggles, Detroit has plenty of other options in Andy Ibanez, Zach McKinstry, Nick Maton and ... [More]

Fri Sep 29 202312:32Matt Vierling Has Productive Game Thursday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling was productive in the 7-3 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Thursday, going 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, a run scored and two strikeouts out of the leadoff spot for the Tigers. Vierling has had a penchant for multi-hit games in the month of September, but he's still hitting a mediocre .247 (20-for-81) with two homers, six doubles, a triple, 11 RBI, a stolen base and 18 runs scored in 22 games (21 starts) this month. In his first year in Detroit and third in the big leagues, the 27-year-old is slashing .257/.326/.373 with a career-high nine home runs, 19 doubles, four triples, six stolen bases and 59 runs scored in 517 plate appearances and 131 games.

Wed Aug 9 202314:53Matt Vierling Returns To The Starting Lineup Wednesday
Detroit Tigers utility player Matt Vierling is back in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Minnesota Twins and right-hander Bailey Ober. Vierling didn't appear in Tuesday's 6-0 victory over the Twins but returns on Wednesday to hit out of the three-hole and play third base where he has seen increased time of late. Acquired in a trade with the Phillies this past offseason, the 26-year-old has been solid this season, hitting .267 with seven homers, five stolen bases, and a .711 OPS on the season, good for a 100 wRC+ that grades out as exactly league average. He will carry a five-game hitting streak into Wednesday's action while he's logged three two-hit efforts over his last nine contests.

Wed Jun 21 202312:15Matt Vierling Back In Action Against Royals
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (back) has returned to the starting lineup on Wednesday to take on the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Brady Singer. Vierling had his back spasms flare up on Sunday and missed the last three games as a result, but he is back in the lineup on Wednesday and is starting in center field and hitting seventh in the batting order. The 26-year-old has been decent in his first year in Detroit, hitting .262 (48-for-183) with seven home runs, seven doubles, 19 RBI, four stolen bases and 19 runs scored in 53 games (199 plate appearances) in just his third MLB season. He's been hot so far in June, going 9-for-21 (.429) with three homers, a double and four RBI in seven games played.

Tue Jun 20 202320:37Matt Vierling Day-To-Day
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (back) reported an onset of lower-back spasms on Sunday, June 18, which is why he was out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals. Vierling's availability for baseball activities is considered day-to-day after he missed his third straight start after being scratched from the lineup on Sunday. The 26-year-old could avoid a stint on the injured list, but only if he returns relatively soon. In his first year with the Tigers, Vierling is slashing .262/.318/.415 with a .733 OPS, seven doubles, seven home runs, 19 RBI, four stolen bases and 19 runs scored in 52 games in a part-time role in the outfield. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues will want to check Wednesday's lineup to see if he's back in there.

Tue Jun 20 202309:44Matt Vierling Likely Available Tuesday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (back) is probable for Tuesday's matchup with Daniel Lynch and the Kansas City Royals. The 26-year-old has missed the past two games after suffering back spasms on Sunday. Vierling already missed some action this year with lower back soreness, but it looks like he'll avoid the injured list this time. Over 52 games this year, the former fifth-round pick is slashing .262/.318/.415 with seven bombs, 19 runs, 19 RBI, and four stolen bases. Vierling's decent power-speed combination makes him a solid bench bat in deeper formats.

Mon Jun 12 202315:49Matt Vierling Back In Tigers Lineup
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (back) has returned from the 10-day injured list and is starting in center field and batting sixth in Monday's lineup against Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton. Vierling played in two minor-league rehab games over the weekend with Triple-A Toledo and is now ready to return to a pretty regular outfield role in Detroit. The 26-year-old has produced modest numbers across the board so far in 197 major-league games over three seasons, and he's returning to a .241 average (39-for-162) with six doubles, four home runs, 15 RBI, four stolen bases and 14 runs scored in 175 plate appearances (46 games) in his first year with the Tigers. Mon Jun 12 202312:08Matt Vierling Could Return Monday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (back) was in the team's clubhouse on Sunday and was set to meet with trainers and manager A.J. Hinch before the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. If he checked out fine, he could return from the 10-day injured list on Monday for the start of a series against the Atlanta Braves. The 26-year-old played two minor-league rehab games with Triple-A Toledo over the weekend and looks ready to return to the big-league roster. When he returns, Vierling should play regularly in Detroit's outfielder, although he's not much of a mixed-league asset in fantasy. Over his first 162 at-bats this year, Vierling is hitting a mediocre .241 with six doubles, four home runs, 15 RBI, four steals and 14 runs scored in 46 games played.

Fri Jun 9 202320:20Matt Manning, Matt Vierling Starting Rehab Assignments
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Manning (foot) and outfielder Matt Vierling (back) are both starting minor-league rehab assignments this weekend. Manning will start for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, while Vierling is starting his rehab assignment for Toledo on Friday. Manning will likely need a handful of rehab starts since he's been on the injured list since mid-April with a fractured right foot. But when he's healthy, the 25-year-old right-hander should have a spot waiting for him in Detroit's starting rotation. Barring a setback this weekend, Vierling should rejoin the big-league roster early next week. Manning had a 4.63 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and seven K's in two starts before his injury. Vierling will return to a .241/.297/.352 slash line with four home runs, 15 RBI and four stolen bases.

Tue May 30 202316:00Matt Vierling Placed On 10-Day Injured List
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling has been placed on the 10-day injured list with low back soreness. It's one of a flurry of moves for the Tigers Tuesday afternoon as ace Eduardo Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day IL with a finger injury while infielder Tyler Nevin and pitcher Braden Bristo have been recalled in corresponding moves. Acquired from the Phillies in the offseason, Vierling is hitting .241 with four homers, four stolen bases, and a .649 OPS across 46 appearances on the campaign. His .324 xwOBA exceeds his .288 wOBA so far this season, so it's possible an uptick in production could be on the horizon upon his return to the lineup.

Tue May 16 202315:18Matt Vierling Resting Against Pirates
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling is taking a day off on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Vierling has earned a spot on the Tigers bench by going 4-for-42 (.095) with a homer, two RBI and seven strikeouts in 11 games played so far in the month of May. The slump has dropped his season line to .220/.273/.317 with two home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in 132 plate appearances. Fantasy managers in AL-only leagues may want to follow the Tigers' lead and bench him. Zach McKinstry is getting the start in right field on Tuesday and is hitting leadoff against Pirates right-hander Luis L. Ortiz. In 33 games in his first year in Detroit, McKinstry is hitting .273 (24-for-88) with five doubles, two home runs, six RBI and five stolen bases.

Tue Apr 25 202316:49Matt Vierling Hitting Leadoff Tuesday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling is hitting leadoff Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers and left-hander Eric Lauer. Vierling didn't start Monday's contest but did make a pinch-hitting appearance that resulted in a strikeout. As has consistently been the case to this point in the season, Vierling will start and leadoff against a left-handed starter as he's a .293 career hitter with a .731 OPS against lefties while hitting just .232 with a .634 OPS against same-handed pitching. Vierling doesn't offer a ton of power but does have a pair of steals in 18 appearances after swiping 15 bags across 138 contests between the minors and majors with the Phillies organization in 2022.

Sun Apr 9 202311:09Matt Vierling Sitting Against Red Sox
Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling is not in Sunday's starting lineup against the Boston Red Sox. Vierling has surprisingly already played in seven games for the Tigers in the early going with the team facing a lot of lefties early on, and he's gone 8-for-28 (.286) with a double, home run, three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in 30 plate appearances in his first year in Detroit. The 26-year-old should continue to see regular playing time with Austin Meadows going on the injured list with anxiety. With Vierling out in the series finale against Boston, Akil Baddoo will start in left field and bat leadoff against right-hander Kutter Crawford. Baddoo was just called up with Meadows going on the IL and will have a chance to make an impact right away.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling is starting in right field and leading off in Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Vierling is set to face off against Red Sox southpaw Chris Sale. The 26-year-old is off to a hot start this season, slashing .350/.381/.550 with a home run, three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base over five games. Vierling has collected a hit in three straight games and will look to extend his hitting streak to four against Boston Thursday. Fantasy managers can use Vierling as a streamer while he's wielding a hot bat.

Thu Mar 30 202314:12Matt Vierling Leading Off In Tigers Debut
Detroit Tigers utility player Matt Vierling is leading off for the Tigers on Opening Day in what marks his debut with his new club. Acquired in an off-season trade with the Phillies that sent Tigers closer Gregory Soto to Philadelphia, Vierling hit .246 with six home runs, seven stolen bases, and a .648 OPS across 117 games with the Phillies last season. However, Vierling has displayed a solid combination of pop and speed in his minor-league career and has just 151 career MLB appearances under his belt approaching his age-26 season. As the lone right-handed hitting option the Tigers broke camp with, expect Vierling to regularly hit leadoff against left-handed pitching beginning Thursday against Rays southpaw Shane McClanahan.
