Fri Dec 29 202314:47Derek Hill Signs Minors Pact With Rangers
Free-agent outfielder Derek Hill has signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers. The former first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers hasn't been able to maintain a job at the MLB level, as he has just 108 big-league games under his belt. In that time, he has hit .229 with four home runs and 10 stolen bases across 304 trips to the plate. Most recently, he played 13 games for the Washington Nationals in the 2023 season but struggled to a .170 average without a home run and with one steal across 50 trips to the plate. In all likelihood, the 27-year-old will serve as outfield depth at Triple-A for the Rangers in the 2024 campaign.

Wed Jun 21 202314:15Derek Hill Making Season Debut Wednesday
Washington Nationals outfielder Derek Hill is playing his first big-league game of the season Wednesday as he takes on the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Miles Mikolas. A 2014 first-round pick of the Tigers, Hill has been unable to put it together at the MLB level with a .240 average alongside four homers, nine steals, and a .630 OPS across just 254 trips to the plate for his career. However, Hill is raking at Triple-A this season with a .324 BA, eight HR, 10 SB, and a .914 OPS across 204 plate appearances. Known more for his glove, it will be interesting to see if Hill's renewed power/speed combination can translate into the big leagues at age 27.

Wed Nov 16 202213:24Nationals Sign Derek Hill
The Washington Nationals signed outfielder Derek Hill to a minor league deal on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training, according to a source. Hill is a former first-round pick by the Detroit Tigers. He finished last season with the Seattle Mariners after they claimed him off waivers in August. The 26-year-old appeared in 31 games for Detroit in 2022, hitting .229/.270/.289 with one home run, three RBI, eight runs scored and three stolen bases in 92 plate appearances. Hill hasn't been able to get his bat going in three major-league seasons, but he's excellent defensively and will give the rebuilding Nationals some more outfield depth heading into the 2023 season. He's hit just .240/.291/.339 with four long balls, 17 RBI, 30 runs scored and nine steals in 95 games over three seasons with Detroit.

Sat May 7 202212:57Derek Hill Leading Off For Tigers
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill is leading off today vs. Framber Valdez and the Houston Astros. Hill has hit left-handed pitching pretty well to begin the season in limited action as he is 3-for-11 with a double. He was also solid in 2021 as he posted a .767 OPS against lefties. He makes for an interesting DFS and streaming option against Valdez as Valdez has allowed a 4.21 FIP against righties thus far in 2022.

Sat Apr 16 202210:04Derek Hill Begins Rehab Assignment
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill (hamstring) began a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on Friday. He led off and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Friday's rehab outing. The 26-year-old has been sidelined since Spring Training with a right hamstring strain. Hill is expected to be a reserve when he returns to action, but with his ability to rack up stolen bases (swiped 6-of-9 bags in just 49 games), the Tigers outfielder does have appeal in AL-Only leagues.

Wed Sep 22 202112:34Surgery Still Up In The Air For Derek Hill
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill (knee) is set to miss the remainder of the 2021 season due to a knee sprain he sustained this past weekend. However, the team and Hill have yet to decide on whether the young outfielder will undergo knee surgery or not. If they elect to have the surgery done, Hill would miss the start of the 2022 season. The 25-year-old flashed some promise in his first extended run in the majors this year. Over 49 games, he slashed .259/.313/.388 with three home runs, six stolen bases, 14 RBI and 19 runs. He has a chance to compete for a starting job in the Tigers outfield or at least a primary reserve role next year, but the surgery route could enable other candidates to get a leg up on him.

Sun Sep 19 202108:14Derek Hill Carted Off The Field On Saturday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill (leg) was carted off the field during the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He suffered a leg injury after falling to the ground hard while attempting to run out a bunt. He should undergo tests on Sunday, but it seems likely that he'll be headed to the injured list and his season may be over. The 25-year-old rookie has seen a good amount of run in the majors this year. He has appeared in 49 games for the Tigers this year, slashing .259/.313/.388 with three home runs, six stolen bases, 14 RBI and 19 runs.

Wed Sep 1 202109:52Derek Hill Homers In Second Straight Game
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill had a strong day at the plate in Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics. He went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run. It was his second consecutive game with a home run and he now has three home runs over 37 games on the year. Hill has been making most of his starts in center field and if he stays hot, he could start wrestling more playing time away from fellow center field Akil Baddoo going forward. Baddoo slashed just .200/.200/.280 in August. The right-handed Hill is the superior bat against lefties, but he has a decent .241/.343/.345 slash line and two home runs against righties as well.

Tue Aug 31 202107:41Derek Hill Homers In Monday's Loss
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the team's 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday. The 25-year-old has played in 36 games with the Tigers this year and he's slashing .260/.330/.346 with two home runs, six stolen bases, 10 RBI and 15 runs. Hill showed a ton of stolen base potential in the minor leagues. He stole 35 bases over 106 games at High-A in 2018 and he stole 21 bases over 120 games at Double-A in 2019. He has at least a little power potential as well as he has slugged .490 with four home runs over 38 games at Triple-A and Single-A this year. He isn't worth rostering in fantasy leagues at this point, but he has the makings of a player who could warrant a roster spot in rotisserie leagues and head-to-head categories leagues later down the line.

Sat Aug 21 202111:38Derek Hill Activated, Starting On Saturday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill (head) has been activated from the 10-day injured list. He suffered an injury after colliding with teammate Akil Baddoo back on August 10. Hill will cover center field and leadoff versus left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu. Hill only has 87 plate appearances this season, so he hasn't shown exactly what he's capable of doing just yet. He'll be an AL-only asset right now and can be avoided elsewhere for the moment.

Wed Aug 18 202121:20Akil Baddoo, Derek Hill Set For Rehab Assignment Wednesday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Akil Baddoo (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. He was placed on the 7-day concussion list after colliding with Derek Hill in the outfield last week. Hill and Baddoo will both begin their rehab assignments on Wednesday that could last through the weekend. Barring a setback, both Tigers outfielders are expected to be activated early next week. Fantasy managers should continuously monitor the status of both Hill and Baddoo as both have been solid options this season. Baddoo is slashing .267/.333/.467 with 10 homers, 14 steals, 45 RBI, and 44 runs over 93 games. Hill is mainly an option for managers looking for speed as the 25-year-old has swiped six bags in over 28 games.

Wed Aug 11 202100:03Akil Baddoo, Derek Hill Exit After Collision
Detroit Tigers outfielders Akil Baddoo and Derek Hill exited Tuesday's game after colliding with each other in the outfield, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Baddoo and Hill collided hard on the warning track and were down on the ground for a moment before walking off the field under their own power. There's no word yet on the specific injury, although it may just be they were shaken up and sore from the hit. Consider them day-to-day for now and check for updates after the game.

Sun Aug 8 202117:41Derek Hill Launches His First Home Run On Sunday
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill hit the first home run of his MLB career in Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians. Facing Indians starter Zach Plesac in the second inning, Hill launched a three-run home run that would be the biggest hit of the day for the Tigers in a game the team lost 7-5. Hill has seen his second tour of the majors this year. Over 27 games, he's slashing .260/.357/.329 with six stolen bases, eight RBI and 13 runs. He's been primarily hitting ninth in the lineup when he's been starting, but he's someone worth watching going forward as he has clear stolen base upside.

Thu Jul 29 202109:49Derek Hill Tallies Three Hits In Wednesday's Win
Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill had the best offensive game of his career in Wednesday's 17-14 win over the Minnesota Twins. Hill batted second in the order for the first time this year and went 3-for-6 with three singles, two runs and two RBI. The 25-year-old is now slashing .289/.396/.289 with six stolen bases, seven RBI and 10 runs over 19 games this year. He's had great plate discipline with a 17% strikeout rate and a 13.2% walk rate. He showed a little bit of power in the minors, hitting 14 home runs over 120 games at Double-A in 2019, but he's yet to produce any power in the majors. Over 34 games in the MLB over the past two years, he has yet to hit an extra-base hit. He could certainly offer some stolen base upside if he starts to see more playing time going forward, but for now his playing time isn't consistent enough to warrant rostering him in any formats.
