Nunez signed a minor league deal with the Pirates on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
A career minor-league player, the 26-year-old Nunez spent 2014 in the Braves' farm system at Double-A Mississippi, where he slashed .301/.353/.373 over 96 games. The Dominican native will compete for a reserve infield spot in the Pirates' organization, but is unlikely to crack the Opening Day roster.
Tue Nov 5 201315:36Tigers release INF Gustavo Nunez
Tigers released INF Gustavo Nunez.
The 25-year-old couldn't hack his way out of a rose garden this year, batting .194 with four RBIs in 61 games at Triple-A Toledo. Nunez's calling card, of course, is his glove, which some consider to be the best in Detroit's organization. Nunez spent the 2012 season on the disabled list with the Pirates, who plucked him in the Rule 5 draft. He was returned to Detroit last winter, but is now free to sign with any team. Don't be surprised if he surfaces on a big league bench next season as glove-first, -second and -third utility player.

INF Gustavo Nunez has been returned to the Tigers.
Nunez was a Rule 5 pick of the Pirates last offseason but missed all of the year while recovering from right ankle surgery. He was then claimed off waivers by the D'Backs in October, but they've opted not to keep him around. The 24-year-old will return to the minors for the Tigers.

Gustavo Nunez (ankle) began a rehab assignment with the Pirates' Gulf Coast League team Monday.
A Rule 5 pick, Nunez has been out all season while recovering from right ankle surgery. "We're just happy to finally get him on the field," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Nunez must be on the Pirates' active roster for 90 days in order to be kept, though that number can carry over to next season.

Thu Dec 8 201111:01Gustavo Nunez taken by Bucs in Rule 5 draft
Pirates selected SS Gustavo Nunez from the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft.
Nunez is very good with the glove, but it's a stretch to think he'll ever be of much use with the bat. The 23-year-old batted just .276/.333/.386 with five homers, 26 RBI and 18 steals (while being caught 13 times) between High- and Double-A in 2011. The Bucs will try to keep him around as a utility infielder.
