The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent right-hander Justin Anderson to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. Anderson made his big-league debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 but hasn't appeared in the majors since 2019. The 31-year-old reliever wasn't good over three minor-league levels with the Kansas City Royals in 2023, posting a 6.87 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 20 walks and 59 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings over 24 appearances (one start) in the Arizona Complex League and with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha. In 111 outings out of the bullpen with the Angels in 2018 and 2019, Anderson allowed 57 runs (54 earned) while walking 32 and striking out 60 in 47 frames. He'll operate as organizational relief depth for the Pale Hose in 2024.

Wed Jan 13 202115:27Rangers sign P Anderson, C Butera to minor league deals
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have signed right-handed pitcher Justin Anderson and veteran catcher Drew Butera to minor league contracts that include invitations to major league spring training. Butera got a one-year deal that will be worth $1 million if he is on the big league roster after he played the past two-plus seasons with Colorado. The 37-year-old catcher has played 541 games for five teams over the past 11 seasons. He caught the final out of Kansas City’s World Series championship in 2015 when he was teammates with new Rangers general manager Chris Young. The 28-year-old Anderson, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery last July, got a two-year minor league deal that would be worth $850,000 in the majors. Anderson’s elbow ligament replacement surgery was performed by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister. He suffered the injury while pitching an intrasquad game for the Los Angeles Angels last summer. Anderson, a Texas native, made 111 career relief appearances for the Angels from 2018-19, going 6-3 with a 4.75 ERA and five saves while averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Dec 7 202015:09Angels acquire closer Raisel Iglesias from Reds in trade
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired closer Raisel Iglesias from the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Noé Ramirez and a player to be named or cash Monday in the first trade of the week of baseball's winter meetings. Iglesias has been the Reds' closer for the past four seasons, racking up 100 saves in 114 opportunities over that stretch with a career 3.15 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Iglesias will make $9,125,000 next season in the final year of his contract. The trade allows the Reds to save money while putting a cornerstone in the Angels’ bullpen, which is being rebuilt by rookie general manager Perry Minasian this offseason. “Bullpen is an area we’d like to improve, and we feel like he’s a positive addition in that area,” Minasian said. “He has a history of pitching late in games, a history of pitching in big games. Not only did he fit from a talent standpoint, but a makeup standpoint. He loves to pitch and loves to compete. He’s not scared of the big moment, and we’re very... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired closer Raisel Iglesias from the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Noé Ramirez and a player to be named or cash. The clubs announced the deal Monday. Iglesias has been the Reds' closer for the past four seasons, racking up 100 saves in 114 opportunities over that stretch with a career 3.15 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He is one of just five major league relievers with at least 100 saves over the past four seasons along with Edwin Diaz, Kenley Jansen, Brad Hand and Alex Colome. The 30-year-old Cuban right-hander is coming off a strong performance in the shortened season. He went 4-3 with a 2.74 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP with eight saves and 31 strikeouts against just five walks. Iglesias had a poor playoff series, capped by allowing a pair of two-run homers in the eighth inning of the Reds' elimination loss to Atlanta in the wild-card round. Ramirez, who turns 31 this month, is a Los Angeles native who was among the Angels’ few effective relievers... [More]

Wed Dec 2 202021:07Angels acquire SS Jos Iglesias from Orioles for 2 prospects
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran shortstop José Iglesias from the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in a trade for minor league right-handers Garrett Stallings and Jean Pinto. Iglesias batted .373 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 39 games with the Orioles last season. He struggled with injuries, but posted the highest average in the majors among players with at least 100 plate appearances. New Angels general manager Perry Minasian expects Iglesias to be an everyday player next season as the long-struggling Angels attempt to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. “We feel really confident that he’s a starting-caliber shortstop that’s going to bring a lot to the table both in the clubhouse and on the field,” Minasian said. “I think he’s really come into his own over the last couple of years. He had an outstanding season for Baltimore. He's an outstanding defender, and he puts the ball in play." The Angels picked the 23-year-old Stallings in the fifth... [More]

The clubs announced the deal Wednesday. Iglesias batted .373 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 39 games with the Orioles last season. He struggled with injuries, but posted the highest average in the majors among players with at least 100 plate appearances. Baltimore exercised its $3.5 million option on Iglesias for 2021 last month. He is joining his fifth big league club after nine seasons spent with Boston, Detroit — where he made the All-Star team in 2015 — Cincinnati and Baltimore. Iglesias' arrival all but confirms the departure of Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who spent the past five seasons playing the position in Anaheim. Los Angeles also could move second baseman David Fletcher full-time to his original position at shortstop, although Iglesias has played only one career game at second... [More]
Fri Oct 30 202016:32Longtime Angels reliever Cam Bedrosian elects free agency
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Reliever Cam Bedrosian has cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent instead of accepting an outright assignment from the Los Angeles Angels. The club announced the decision Friday among several transactions. Bedrosian would have been eligible for arbitration this winter. The right-hander has spent his entire career with the Angels, who drafted him in the first round in 2010. He reached the majors in 2014 and spent seven seasons in Los Angeles' bullpen, recording a 3.70 ERA over 277 2/3 innings. Bedrosian, who has nine career saves, briefly served as the Angels' closer for two stints in 2017. The Angels assigned catcher José Briceño and infielder Elliot Soto outright to Triple-A Salt Lake after they cleared waivers. Los Angeles also announced reliever Jacob Barnes had been claimed off waivers by the New York Mets. The Angels also reinstated right-hander Justin Anderson from the 60-day disabled list. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Jul 17 202023:01MLB's testing sweep brings some success but optics are issue
PHOENIX (AP) — Major League Baseball's COVID-19 testing sweep appears to be having some success even as large swaths of the United States continue to struggle with containing the fast-spreading virus.MLB and the players' union released statistics Friday saying six of 10,548 samples were new positives in the week ending Thursday, a rate of 0.05%. In addition to five players, one staff member tested positive. That's fairly good news for a sport that's trying to begin its abbreviated 60-game schedule next week. But players and coaches are also aware that the optics of baseball's relative testing success — especially in hard-hit states like Arizona, California, Texas and Florida — might not be ideal considering demand for tests has sometimes been higher than the supply for the average person.“If they’ve deemed that players being tested is necessary to provide jobs, opportunity, entertainment, TV, all that’s going on -- if they think that’s really valuable -- then they’ve weighed it’s important... Thu Feb 13 202018:08Bundy welcomes chance to be pitching-poor Angels' workhorse
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Anthony Rendon met many of his new teammates for the first time Thursday during a quick visit to the Los Angeles Angels' clubhouse a few days before their position players' reporting date.Another newcomer with huge importance to the Angels' turnaround hopes is already hard at work in Arizona. While the $245 million third baseman was the Halos' highest-profile offseason addition, right-hander Dylan Bundy is expected to fill a need that's even more pressing for the Angels than offense.Bundy made 89 starts over the last three seasons for the Baltimore Orioles while averaging 167 2-3 innings per year, while only two starters in the last three years have made 30 starts for the Angels. Los Angeles had exactly one pitcher who managed to get through even 100 innings on its injury-riddled staff last season, and the Halos' 5.12 team ERA was 25th among the majors' 30 teams. To avoid overtaxing their bullpen again, the Angels badly needed durable, innings-eating starters.
