Wed Mar 2000:49Pablo Lopez Posting Poor Spring Numbers
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez has not looked like the ace-tier fantasy option fantasy managers are hoping for this spring. The 28-year-old has gone 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched. While this is not encouraging for fantasy managers, they should remember that spring samples are small and that established players like Lopez may use the time to work on aspects of their game without concern for results. Lopez should still be considered a high-end fantasy option, as he had a solid 3.66 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 29.2% strikeout rate in 32 starts and 194 IP in 2023.

Wed Feb 2818:42Pablo Lopez, Jhoan Duran Beat Up Wednesday
Minnesota Twins Opening Day starter Pablo Lopez and closer Jhoan Duran were beat up in the team's 12-3 Grapefruit League loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. In total, Twins pitchers allowed 17 hits. Lopez, who struck out two and gave up three hits in his two innings of work, surrendered a two-run homer to infielder Ramon Urias. Fantasy managers should take spring results with a grain of salt. Duran, a 26-year-old Dominican reliever, saved a career-high 27 games for the Twins in 2023 and has been excellent in his two seasons in Minnesota, sporting a 2.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 35 saves, 41 walks and 173 K's in 130 relief innings. He's also one of the league's hardest throwers, as he led baseball with 473 pitches thrown at or above 100 mph. Not only does Duran strike out a lot of hitters, but he also keeps the ball on the ground. He is RotoBaller's fourth-ranked fantasy closer.

Wed Jan 1720:26Twins Say Pablo Lopez Will Be Opening Day Starter
Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli announced on the radio on Wednesday that right-hander Pablo Lopez will be the team's Opening Day starter in 2024. It's a pretty early announcement, but it speaks to the confidence the Twins have in Lopez, who made his first All-Star team in 2023 and went 11-8 with a 3.66 ERA (3.33 FIP) and 1.15 WHIP while walking 48 and striking out a career-high 234 batters in 32 starts covering a career-high 194 innings in his first year in Minnesota. The 32-year-old has now made 64 starts in the last two seasons, but he's still never gone over 200 innings in his six years in the big leagues and is still somewhat of an injury concern. Adding a sweeper to his repertoire led to a career-high 29.2% strikeout rate. Assuming he can stay healthy all year again, Lopez is a fine target as a high-end No. 2 fantasy starter.

Wed Oct 11 202319:23Pablo Lopez Named Game 5 Starter
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez has been named the starter for a potential Game 5 against the Houston Astros. No surprise here, but the Twins need to avoid elimination during Wednesday's game in order for there to be a Game 5. The 27-year-old threw seven shutout innings during the Game 2 victory over Houston. Lopez has allowed only one run over his 12 2/3 innings of work during the postseason.

Mon Oct 9 202303:10Pablo Lopez Turns In Stellar Performance
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez was dominant on Sunday, tossing seven sparkling innings to lead the Twins to a crucial 6-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the ALDS. Lopez didn't allow a run over the seven frames, striking out seven while allowing six hits and a walk. This makes two excellent starts for the righty in these playoffs, with the first coming against the Blue Jays in the Wild Card series. Between the two starts, he has allowed just one run in 13 IP. The Twins could not have asked for a better performance out of their key off-season addition.

Fri Oct 6 202318:34Pablo Lopez Gets Game 2, Sonny Gray To Start Game 3
Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli announced on Friday that right-hander Pablo Lopez will start Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros on Sunday, while right-hander Sonny Gray will get the ball for Game 3 on Tuesday. Gray got the win in Game 2 of the wild-card series against the Blue Jays on Wednesday by throwing five shutout innings with two walks and six K's. He picked up two no-decisions against Houston in the regular season and allowed only four earned runs while striking out 16 in 13 innings against them. Lopez bounced back in the Game 1 start in the wild-card series on Tuesday after a rough finish to the regular season, picking up the win while giving up an earned run in 5 2/3 frames with three strikeouts. The 27-year-old did not face the Astros in the regular season this year.

Thu Sep 28 202312:56Pablo Lopez To Start Game 1 Of Wild-Card Series
Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said the team will use right-hander Pablo Lopez for Game 1 of the wild-card series next week, with right-hander Sonny Gray getting the ball in Game 2. The Twins' opponent hasn't been finalized, but it's likely to be one of either the Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros or Seattle Mariners. Lopez has been solid for the Twins all year, going 11-8 with a 3.66 ERA (3.33 FIP), 1.15 WHIP, 48 walks and a career-high 234 strikeouts in 32 starts covering a career-high 194 innings pitched in his first year in Minnesota as a first-time All-Star. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.68 ERA with 38 strikeouts and only five walks in his five starts (29 1/3 frames) down the stretch in five September starts.

Sun Sep 10 202321:50Pablo Lopez Looks Excellent On Sunday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez was fantastic on the mound during Sunday's game against the New York Mets. The right-hander allowed two hits over eight shutout frames during Sunday's loss. Lopez set a new season-high for himself with 14 strikeouts during this contest. Sadly, Lopez didn't get any run support and has to settle for the no-decision. Since the beginning of August, Lopez holds a 1.62 ERA with a 53/10 K/BB ratio across eight starts. His next outing will come against the Chicago White Sox.

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez turned in a decent start Tuesday but took the loss in a 4-2 game against the Guardians. Lopez pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits (including a solo home run) and three walks with five strikeouts. The 27-year-old has had an inconsistent season, mixing outstanding appearances with disappointing ones. He is now 9-7 with a 3.72 ERA and a 10.71 K/9 rate in 27 starts. He will have the opportunity to redeem himself in his next start at the Guardians.

Sat Aug 12 202310:19Pablo Lopez Faces Familiar Foe On Saturday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez takes the ball for Saturday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies. With 14 quality starts in 2023, the right-hander represents a big reason why the Twins lead MLB in this category (59) as a team. Lopez has plenty of experience meeting with the Phillies from his days in the NL East, and the 27-year-old holds a strong 1.95 ERA in 27.2 innings (five starts) against them since 2020. After a seven-run debacle on July 15, Lopez has improved for a 1.80 ERA with 28 strikeouts across his last 25 frames (four starts) and aims to stay sharp on Saturday.

Tue Jul 25 202314:32Pablo Lopez Looking To Build On Improved Outing Tuesday
Minnesota Twins pitcher Pablo Lopez will look to build on a strong outing from his last time out Tuesday night against the Seattle Mariners. He wasn't completely dominant last week against this same Mariners club in Seattle but surrendered just two earned runs across five innings of work while punching out seven. Of course, that outing was of the bounce-back variety as the right-hander was touched up for seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks while serving up a pair of long balls against a weak Oakland A's offense in his previous start. Lopez has had an up-and-down campaign that has resulted in a 4.22 ERA in 20 starts but a 3.39 SIERA and career-high 30.2% K% suggest that he has been better than his surface ERA shows.

Thu Jul 6 202312:50Pablo Lopez Tosses Complete-Game Shutout
Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez was at his best on Wednesday night in the team's 5-0 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals. Lopez threw his first career complete-game shutout by holding the Royals scoreless over nine innings of work while giving up four hits, walking none and striking out a season-high and career-high 12 hitters. The 27-year-old hurler's stellar outing lowered his season ERA to 3.89 (3.18 FIP), and he also sports a 1.09 WHIP, 30 walks and 138 strikeouts in 111 innings over 18 starts in his first year with the Twins. Lopez has now fanned 28 hitters and walked only four in 21 innings in his last three starts, and he's picked up quality starts in five of his last six outings. Fantasy managers will be hoping that he can maintain this momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Thu Jun 1 202314:51Pablo Lopez In Search Of Consistency Moving Forward
Minnesota Twins pitcher Pablo Lopez is in search of more consistency as he takes on the rival Cleveland Guardians Thursday night. Lopez came out of the gate hot this season, allowing two earned runs or less in each of his first four starts. However, he's now allowed a minimum of four earned runs in four of his last seven. At the same time, he's yielded two earned runs or fewer in two of his last four starts. Rather than riding this rollercoaster, Lopez will be looking to lower his 4.11 ERA toward his 3.41 SIERA while continuing to rack up the strikeouts with a 30% K% on the campaign. He'll look to begin a crucial series against the Guardians with his fourth win of the season Thursday.

Thu May 4 202318:44Pablo Lopez Bounces Back In Stellar Outing
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez had a little trouble last time out but bounced back nicely on Thursday against the White Sox. Lopez struck out eight over seven innings, allowing seven baserunners and two runs. The righty had given up 11 runs over his last 10 innings against some poor offenses, so this outing was nice to see, as he lowered his era to 3.77. Lopez is still a great pitching option for managers, even after his two poor performances, and hopefully, this start will be a sign of things to come.

Fri Apr 28 202321:18Pablo Lopez Struggles On Friday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez allowed six runs on eight hits over six innings in an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Lopez struck out seven and walked one while earning the win. The veteran hurler got off to a decent enough start, allowing two runs over his first five innings, but he allowed two runs in the sixth and another two in the seventh inning before departing. Lopez notched 11 swinging strikes in the start, which goes down as his worst since joining the Twins. He will look to bounce back in his next outing, which will be Thursday against the Chicago White Sox.

Fri Apr 21 202311:59Twins Finalize Extension With Pablo Lopez
The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that they have finalized a four-year, $73.5 million contract extension with starting pitcher Pablo Lopez. He will remain with the organization through the 2027 season after Minnesota acquired him from the Miami Marlins in the winter in a deal that sent 2022 American League batting champion Luis Arraez to the Fish. Lopez has fit in quite nicely in Minnesota already, as the 27-year-old right-hander has a 1.73 ERA (2.72 FIP), 0.81 WHIP, six walks and a league-leading 33 strikeouts in 26 innings already in his first four starts with the team. He's in a much better situation in fantasy with the move from the tough National League East division to the weaker American League Central.

Mon Apr 17 202312:01Pablo Lopez, Twins Closing In On Four-Year Extension
The Minnesota Twins and starting pitcher Pablo Lopez are closing in on a four-year, $73.5 million contract extension on Monday, according to sources. An agreement is expected to be finalized soon. Before the extension, Lopez was set to reach free agency after the 2024 season. The Twins acquired Lopez in the offseason in a trade with the Miami Marlins that sent 2022 American League batting champion Luis Arraez to the Marlins. The 27-year-old Lopez has gotten off to a great start with the Twins, going 1-1 with a stingy 1.73 ERA (2.71 FIP), 0.81 WHIP and career-high 33.7 percent strikeout rate in his first four starts covering 26 innings pitched. A new slider and increased velocity on his fastball have led to more strikeouts so far.

Sun Apr 16 202317:25Pablo Lopez Strikes Out Seven On Sunday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings in a 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. Lopez struck out seven and walked one in what ended up as a loss for the veteran hurler. Lopez was excellent on Sunday, notching 13 swinging strikes on 103 pitches, but he couldn't quite outduel Yankees starter Gerrit Cole. Lopez has been fantastic through his first four starts of 2023, posting a 1-1 record, 1.73 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts over 26 innings of work. He draws a plus matchup against the Washington Nationals next time through the rotation.

Thu Mar 30 202321:33Pablo Lopez Picks Up Win In Minnesota Debut
Minnesota Twins left-hander Pablo Lopez threw 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball in a 2-0 Opening Day win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Lopez struck out eight, walked three, and picked up the win in his first start for the Twins. The veteran southpaw proved to be difficult for the Royals to make contact against as he finished with 17 swinging strikes on 85 total pitches. Minnesota has to be pleased with the early returns after they acquired Lopez from the Miami Marlins for Luis Arraez in the offseason. Lopez could finish as a top fantasy starting pitcher if he is able to stay healthy this season.

Fri Jan 20 202317:15Twins Land Pablo Lopez And Two Prospects
The Minnesota Twins acquired right-hander Pablo Lopez and prospects Jose Salas and Byron Chourio from the Miami Marlins on Friday in exchange for All-Star second baseman Luiz Arraez, according to sources. Lopez went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA (3.71 FIP), 1.17 WHIP and 23.6 percent strikeout rate in 180 innings over a career-high 32 starts in his fifth MLB season with the Marlins. The 26-year-old will be under Twins control for the next two seasons and heads to another favorite pitcher's park in a rather weak division as well. Neither Salas nor Chourio were listed on Miami's list of top-30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline. Salas is the more intriguing of the two. The 19-year-old switch-hitting shortstop only made it to High-A in 2022, but he could rise quickly in Minnesota's system.
