ATLANTA (AP) — When the New York Mets finally found out Yoenis Céspedes was OK, they suddenly learned something else: The slugger had opted out of playing the rest of this season.Hours after Céspedes didn’t report to the ballpark without explanation, the Mets discovered in the late innings of Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Atlanta that he wouldn’t be back this year because of coronavirus concerns.“I am very surprised,” first-year manager Luis Rojas said. “Him and I have had conversations regularly about playing time, where he was going to hit in the lineup, building him up in the outfield.”“Nothing like this, so this is definitely a surprise,” he said.Céspedes went 0 for 4 during a 7-1 loss Saturday night in Atlanta. (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Rick Porcello made his first pitch to be part of the club’s starting rotation Saturday, but the Miami Marlins stole a bit of his thunder.Porcello pitched one inning and allowed two hits in the Mets’ spring training opener, allowing one run when Miami’s Monte Harrison swiped a pair of bases and scored on a bloop single. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo has been reinstated from the injured list after missing more than three months with a bulging disk in his neck.The team also activated backup catcher Tomás Nido and called up several players from the minors as major league rosters expanded Sunday. Nido had been on the seven-day injured list with a concussion.Nimmo drew a pinch-hit walk in the eighth inning Sunday night against Philadelphia and came around to score the tying run on a wild pitch. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The New York Mets recalled outfielder Brandon Nimmo from Triple-A Syracuse prior to Sunday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.The 26-year-old former first-round pick has been out since May 21 with a neck injury. He hit .200 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 43 games with the Mets this season and had a homer and six RBIs in 10 rehab appearances at Triple-A.The Mets also recalled right-hander Tyler Bashlor, lefty Daniel Zamora, catcher Tomas Nido and infielder Sam Haggerty. Bashlor is 0-3 with a 7.26 ERA in 18 games, Zamora has a 5.68 ERA in 12 outings and Nido has batted .207 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 13 contests for New York. Haggerty will be making his major-league debut.
