The 27-year-old right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA in 26 appearances with Triple-A Toledo this past season, including a 0.47 ERA in nine outings after the All-Star break. A former respected relief prospect, Weinhardt was about to hit the open market as a six-year minor league free agent. He was flogged to the tune of a 6.39 ERA in 30 career MLB appearances. A change of scenery might do the northpaw well.

Tigers sent RHP Robbie Weinhardt outright to Triple-A Toledo.
Weinhardt successfully cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 25-year-old right-hander made two appearances with the Tigers in April and has an 8.80 ERA and 13/5 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season.

Robbie Weinhardt is expected to get a crack at an Opening Day bullpen spot this spring.
Weinhardt posted a gorgeous 1.62 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across 33-plus innings at Triple-A Toledo last season and has done all the proving he needs to do in the minor leagues. Jose Valverde, Joaquin Benoit, Joel Zumaya, Ryan Perry, Daniel Schlereth and Brad Thomas are near locks for bullpen jobs this year with Detroit. Maybe Weinhardt can squeeze in behind them.

The Tigers will call up RHP Robbie Weinhardt when rosters expand Wednesday.
Weinhardt, 24, posted an ugly 9.17 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings with the Tigers back in July and early August. But the Tigers think he can be much better than that. The right-hander has managed a 1.62 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and a 25/7 K/BB ratio in 33-plus innings this season at Triple-A Toledo.

He'll take the roster spot vacated by Armando Galarraga, who was sent to the minor leagues following Tuesday's game. Weinhardt just returned to the Mud Hens last week after missing a month with a muscle injury in shoulder. The 24-year-old sinkerballer has a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over 22 appearances between Single-A Connecticut and Triple-A Toledo this season. He sits in the low-to-mid 90s with his heater and has averaged 9.5 K/9 over parts of three seasons in the minor leagues.
