Tue Feb 12 201913:30Toussaint among young candidates for spot in Braves rotation
ATLANTA (AP) — Braves closer Arodys Vizcaino has help for anyone confused by the team's long list of young starting pitchers, including several who had Atlanta auditions in 2018.As Atlanta's pitchers and catchers prepare to report to spring training this week, there are many highly regarded candidates for at least one open spot in the rotation. The list includes Mike Soroka, Touki Toussaint, Kyle Wright, Kolby Allard, Max Fried, Bryse Wilson and Luiz Gohara.Vizcaino sees one starter emerging from the crowd."Touki. Touki," Vizcaino said last month. "He's very good. He impressed me a lot."Vizcaino wouldn't be swayed. Nor would he seek a diplomatic way out when asked about Soroka."I like Touki more," Vizcaino said. And that was that.Vizcaino isn't the only Braves player with high expectations for Toussaint, 22, who was acquired from Arizona in 2015. The Braves agreed to take on Bronson Arroyo's $10 million contract with Toussaint for third baseman Phil Gosselin.Toussaint could make that $10... [More]

Tue Jul 31 201802:34LEADING OFF: Harper, Archer, Beltre could go on deadline day
A look at what's happening around the majors today:DEADLINE DAYTeams have until 4 p.m. EDT to swing a trade without waivers, meaning it could be the last chance for contenders to land some top targets. Could Bryce Harper really be on the move? Will the Rays find a new home for Chris Archer? What about the Rangers and Adrian Beltre? Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier and Rays reliever Sergio Romo could go, too. Meanwhile, there hasn't been any movement from the Mets to trade Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, though Zach Wheeler could still wind up elsewhere.THE CLOSER'S OPENERBefore Roberto Osuna steps onto the mound as Houston's new closer, the Astros want him to stand in the clubhouse and explain himself. The former Blue Jays closer was traded by Toronto to Houston on Monday, but he won't pitch until at least next week as he serves a 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. Osuna was charged with one count of assault... [More]

With the All-Star break complete, fantasy baseball players are digging in and hoping to make a run toward a championship season. With that goal in mind here are a few players that can help strengthen your team as you move on up in the standings:PLAYERS TO PICK UPJAKE BAUERS, OF, Tampa Bay Rays (55 percent owned in CBSSports.com leagues) - Bauer is batting .324 with five HRs and nine RBIs in his last eight games. He has power and is surprisingly good at stealing bases. Bauer will be a regular in the Rays lineup for the rest of the season and depending on your league's rules, he might gain outfield eligibility by season's end.ERVIN SANTANA, SP, Minnesota Twins (48 percent) - Santana spent the first part of the season on the DL and is set to make his season debut July 24. His first start is expected to be against the Blue Jays, who have the ninth worst batting average against right handed pitchers.KIRBY YATES, RP, San Diego Padres (31 percent) - Yates is set to inherit the closer's role now... ATLANTA (AP) — In a July 12 story about the Atlanta Braves, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Anibal Sanchez is among the team's starting pitchers currently on the disabled list. ATLANTA (AP) — As well as things have gone for the Atlanta Braves in the season's first half, lately there are troubling signs that something is not right.Or maybe a lot of things are not right. The Braves have lost six of eight games and this week briefly fell out of the NL East lead for the first time since May 30. They moved back into a first-place tie with Philadelphia with Wednesday night's win over Toronto. Atlanta was off Thursday before Friday night's opener of a home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Braves are looking to regain their momentum entering next week's All-Star break."We've just have to get back to getting the whole thing going," Braves manager Brian Snitker said Wednesday. "We're obviously struggling in a lot of different areas."Snitker was far from panicked. He believes the downturn can be easily explained as a part of the normal flow of a season and said, "I just think teams are going to do that."Even so, Snitker said he has examined all options, including... Fri Jun 8 201812:56FANTASY PLAYS: Players to pick up or stream in baseball
PLAYERS TO PICK UPANDREW HEANEY, SP, Los Angeles Angels (47 percent owned in Yahoo): The Angels aren't treating Heaney with kid gloves after his Tommy John surgery. After his complete game shutout Tuesday night, Heaney has thrown at least six innings in six of his last seven starts. He's traded his higher strikeout rate for a lower walk rate and ERA this season. The Angels six-man rotation makes owning any LA starter frustrating in a weekly league, but Heaney has high upside as a former top pitching prospect.JAKE BAUERS, 1B, Tampa Bay Rays (4 percent) - Bauers got the call Wednesday night, and as deep as first base looked during draft season, it's been dismal so far in 2018. Bauers doesn't do one thing great, but he does a lot to help across the board. As a first baseman with a nice walk rate and the ability to sprinkle in some stolen bases, he's worth a speculative add in 12-team leagues.KYLE BARRACLOUGH, RP, Miami Marlins (48 percent) - The experiment of trying to get as much trade value... Fri May 11 201815:55Column: Baby Braves suddenly baseball's most exciting team
ATLANTA (AP) — For John Schuerholz, this all looks so familiar. The youth. The exuberance. The enormous talent.Back in 1991, Schuerholz took over as general manager of an Atlanta Braves team that was on the cusp of greatness. Hall of Famers-to-be Tom Glavine and John Smoltz had worked through their growing pains. Chipper Jones was beginning his climb through the minors, a first overall pick just getting started out on his road to Cooperstown. Now semi-retired but still a prominent figure around the ballpark (and a Hall of Famer, too), Schuerholz sees another group of youngsters poised for something special. The Baby Braves."It's very similar," Schuerholz said. "Same kind of players, same kind of attitude, same kind of buy-in from the fans, who love this energetic, dynamic, exciting kind of baseball."Indeed, after going through a painful but necessary rebuild that has become the model for baseball success (see: World Series champion Houston Astros ) and a still-fresh-in-everyone's-mind signing...
