Wed Mar 2017:04Ryan Mountcastle Returns To The Lineup
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (neck) returned to the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Wednesday versus the Philadelphia Phillies and started at first base and hit fifth in the batting order. Neck stiffness kept Mountcastle out of the spring lineup since last Friday, but he's back in there on Wednesday and should be fine to play on Opening Day next Thursday against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. The 27-year-old's fantasy arrow is pointing up after hitting .270/.328/.452 with 18 home runs and 68 RBI in 115 games in 2023 despite missing time with vertigo and a shoulder injury. He's never played in more than 145 games in his four seasons in the big leagues, but he did hit 33 homers in 2021 and could be an excellent value pick in fantasy leagues if he can stay healthy in 2024. Mountcastle is RotoBaller's No. 24 ranked first baseman.

Thu Feb 2916:08Ryan Mountcastle Out Sick Thursday
Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (illness) was scratched from Thursday's Grapefruit League lineup against the Pittsburgh Pirates because he was under the weather. Mountcastle is fine and should be back in the lineup in spring training games soon. The 27-year-old right-handed-hitting first baseman missed a month of action in 2023 due to a bout with vertigo, but this illness doesn't appear to be related to that, thankfully. After a rough start last year that was likely a result of his vertigo, Mountcastle started raking and finished by hitting .270/.328/.452 with 18 home runs and 68 RBI for the first-place O's. He has gone hitless through his first six spring at-bats and will look to get going when he returns to the lineup, most likely at some point this weekend.

Thu Feb 2913:28Ryan Mountcastle Scratched On Thursday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle was scratched from the Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday against the Pirates. There was no reason given for why Mountcastle will not play, but we'll update you if it was injury-related. Tyler Nevin ended up taking his place at first base and hit third in the lineup. Mountcastle went on the injured list last year in June due to vertigo and missed a month, but when he returned, he started crushing the ball and finished the regular season with a .270/.328/.452 slash line, 18 home runs, 68 RBI and 64 runs scored in 423 at-bats in his third full major-league season. Mountcastle resides in a great lineup and hitting environment, but there are injury concerns. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 26 fantasy first baseman.

Wed Sep 27 202316:30Ryan Mountcastle Back From Injured List
The Baltimore Orioles activated first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday and optioned outfielder Ryan McKenna to the minors in a corresponding move. Mountcastle didn't immediately return to Baltimore's starting lineup on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals, but he should make his first start on Thursday for the series opener against the Boston Red Sox. The 26-year-old should return to being the O's regular first baseman this weekend and into the postseason after missing just 10 days with a minor left-shoulder injury. In his fourth big-league season in Baltimore, Mountcastle is hitting .269 (111-for-413) with 18 home runs, 20 doubles, a triple, 67 RBI, three stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 111 games.

Tue Sep 26 202318:38Ryan Mountcastle Takes Swings On Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) was able to take batting practice ahead of Tuesday's contest. That is great news as Mountcastle continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury. Orioles' manager Brandon Hyde mentioned that Mountcastle could return from the injured list on Wednesday. However, it seems more likely that he'd return closer to the weekend. Regardless, it sounds like the 26-year-old will be back in action before the end of the month.

Sat Sep 23 202317:06Ryan Mountcastle Hopeful To Return Soon
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) was placed on the injured list on Wednesday, retroactive September 17. This is a tough blow to the O's roster that is heading towards the postseason. Luckily, Orioles' manager Brandon Hyde said on Saturday that he believes Mountcastle's injured list stint will be minimal. Mountcastle was able to take some batting practice on Saturday and field grounders as well. He won't be eligible to return until Wednesday, but will hopefully be back in the lineup soon. In the meantime, Ryan O'Hearn should continue seeing increased playing time at first base.

Wed Sep 20 202316:01Ryan Mountcastle Goes On Injured List
The Baltimore Orioles placed first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with left-shoulder soreness and recalled outfielder Ryan McKenna from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Mountcastle had missed the last seven games, so the injured-list move was backdated to Sunday, meaning he is eligible to return a week from Wednesday on Sept. 27 against the Washington Nationals. The 26-year-old will not be able to help fantasy managers much the rest of the way. Baltimore's primary concern is to have him back healthy for the start of the postseason. In the meantime, expect Ryan O'Hearn to see most of the starts at the cold corner for the O's.

Tue Sep 19 202318:02Ryan Mountcastle Remains Out Of The Lineup
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros. The 26-year-old will now miss his sixth game in a row due to left shoulder discomfort. The Orioles continue to list Mountcastle as day-to-day, so it seems he'll avoid a trip to the injured list. In his absence, Heston Kjerstad will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth versus right-hander Hunter Brown on Tuesday. Fantasy managers will have to check back on Wednesday for another update on Mountcaste's status.

Fri Sep 15 202316:29Ryan Mountcastle Out With Shoulder Injury
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday as they face the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. The good news is that Mountcastle doesn't have any structural damage in his left shoulder and isn't expected to go on the injured list, but he'll miss his second straight game entering the weekend. Ryan O'Hearn is starting at first base and will hit cleanup for the O's, with rookie Heston Kjerstad making his big-league debut as the designated hitter while batting seventh against Rays right-hander Zach Eflin. In his fourth season with Baltimore, Mountcastle is slashing .269/.327/.453 with 18 home runs, 20 doubles, a triple, 67 RBI, three stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 111 games.

Thu Sep 14 202318:43Ryan Mountcastle Feeling Better, Could Pinch-Hit Thursday
Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde says that first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) is not an "injured list candidate" after an MRI revealed no damage on his left shoulder. Better yet, the 26-year-old could even be available off the bench for Thursday's divisional clash with the Tampa Bay Rays, per Hyde. Mountcastle had a sluggish start to the year before heating up in a big way post-All-Star break, but he's back to slumping again. The slugger is hitting .177 (6-for-34) with no extra-base hits in his last 10 games. With Mountcastle just day-to-day, there seems to be a good chance he's back in the fold for Saturday's action.

Thu Sep 14 202315:06Ryan Mountcastle Absent On Thursday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) is not in the starting lineup Thursday versus the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Aaron Civale. The 26-year-old left Wednesday's contest against the Cardinals early and there was some concern about the ailment following the contest as he went for imaging. Losing Mountcastle for a lengthy period would be a notable blow for the playoff-bound Orioles as he has hit .269 with 18 home runs and a .780 OPS on the season while he has hit .324 with a .900 OPS and 151 wRC+ since the All-Star break. Ryan O'Hearn will see reps versus right-handed pitching at first base while Anthony Santander could slide into that spot versus southpaws.

Thu Sep 14 202300:17Ryan Mountcastle Going For Imaging Thursday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) said his left shoulder is feeling "not great" after leaving the game on Wednesday early against the St. Louis Cardinals, and there is some concern about his injury. He's hopeful that it will feel better on Thursday, but he'll undergo imaging tests to make sure after feeling a pop on a swing in the first inning. It doesn't sound great, and it's likely why the Orioles are calling up first base prospect Heston Kjerstad to the big-league roster. We'll have a better timetable on Mountcastle after the results of his imaging come back, but this sounds like an injury that could potentially end the 26-year-old's season. Mountcastle came into Wednesday's contest hitting .269/.325/.453 with 18 home runs, 67 RBI, three steals and 63 runs scored in his 413 at-bats in 2023.

Wed Sep 13 202320:15Ryan Mountcastle Injured Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) left Wednesday's game early against the St. Louis Cardinals with left-shoulder discomfort in the third inning. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Ramon Urias. Before leaving the contest, Mountcastle walked in his only plate appearance. The 26-year-old's injury didn't look very serious, so fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into Thursday's series opener against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays. Mountcastle entered Wednesday's game hitting .269/.325/.453 with 18 home runs, 20 doubles, a triple, 67 RBI, three stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 110 games in his fourth big-league season. Considering he hit 33 bombs in his first full season in 2021, Mountcastle has been somewhat of a disappointment for the first-place O's.

Sat Sep 2 202318:20Ryan Mountcastle Remains Out On Saturday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (illness) remains out of Saturday's starting lineup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This marks the second game in a row that Mountcastle has missed due to an illness. In his absence, Ryan O'Hearn will cover first base and bat cleanup versus right-hander Slade Cecconi on Saturday. O'Hearn doesn't offer much upside with the bat, so he won't be a great streaming option for Saturday's slate. Fantasy managers should consider Mountcastle as day-to-day right now.

Thu Aug 10 202319:06Ryan Mountcastle Picking Up Steam, Homers In Win
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Houston Astros. The 26-year-old mashed a seventh-inning two-run tater to continue his recent hot streak. Mountcastle has looked like a different player in 24 games since returning from a month-long vertigo bout on July 9, hitting a potent .408 (29-for-71) with four homers, seven doubles, and 14 RBI. The slugger returned from the All-Star break with Statcast's largest discrepancy in SLG and xSLG, and it appears some positive regression may finally be coming into fruition. Fantasy managers should keep riding the wave with Mountcastle, and Cedric Mullins' (groin) eventual return to the mix should further enhance his value.

Tue Aug 1 202300:33Ryan Mountcastle Stays Hot, Plates Three Monday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle continued to hit well in Monday's 4-2 win over the Blue Jays, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. The 26-year-old has really picked things up at the plate since returning from the injured list with vertigo, batting .333 with two home runs and six RBI since the All-Star break. Mountcastle has been a solid fantasy contributor over the past couple of seasons, so hopefully he can continue to produce for the final couple of months.

Thu Jul 20 202317:58Ryan Mountcastle Absent From Thursday's Lineup
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is missing from Thursday's lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays. Ryan O'Hearn is DHing and cleaning up while Anthony Santander covers the cold corner and bats third for this one. Mountcastle's playing time has fluctuated lately, alternating starting appearances in each of Baltimore's seven games post-All-Star break. The 26-year-old might need top-prospect Colton Cowser's 3-for-27 slump to prolong for him to regain more consistent playing time. Mountcastle is slashing a career-low .234/.269/.426 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, and two stolen bases in 256 at-bats this season, making him a bit of a fringe hold in shallow leagues at the moment.

Sun Jul 9 202312:27Orioles Reinstate Ryan Mountcastle From Injured List
The Baltimore Orioles reinstated infielder Ryan Mountcastle (illness) from the 10-day injured list on Sunday and optioned left-hander Bruce Zimmermann to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Mountcastle isn't playing in the first-half finale on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, but he's back with the big-league club after missing extended time due to vertigo. The 26-year-old's condition helps explain why he hit just .227 (55-for-242) in the first half of the season, but he also managed 11 home runs, 39 RBI and 34 runs scored in 60 games played. He hit .300 in his final 12 minor-league rehab games with Norfolk, and hopefully he'll be able to turn things around in the second half of the season as a regular for the Orioles.

Wed Jul 5 202300:31Ryan Mountcastle Playing But Struggling At Triple-A
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (vertigo) is batting .209 with one home run, five RBI, and four walks in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk. The 26-year-old has been on the injured list prior to June 13's game, with the move retroactive to June 10. While he has been playing at Triple-A, it remains to be seen when he could rejoin the O's, as vertigo is not as clear as a condition to manage or recover from compared to a bone or muscle injury. Mountcastle hadn't hit for average but was hitting for power with the O's, slashing .227/.264/.421 with 11 HR and 39 RBI in 261 plate appearances. He is worth hanging onto for fantasy managers with IL spots in their leagues.

Tue Jun 20 202312:01Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle To Play In Rehab Game
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins (groin) and infielder Ryan Mountcastle (vertigo) are both expected to be in Triple-A Norfolk's lineup on Tuesday on their minor-league rehab assignments. Mullins is nearing a return to the big leagues after being out since late May with a right-groin strain, and barring a setback in the minors, the 28-year-old should be back with Baltimore by the end of the week. Mullins should be rostered everywhere and will return to a .263/.356/.479 line with eight homers, 39 RBI and 13 steals. Mountcastle is finally symptom-free after dealing with vertigo, and he, too, should rejoin the O's lineup later this week after playing in a few rehab games. The 26-year-old has struggled at the plate this year, hitting .227/.264/.422 in 60 games, but he does have 11 long balls and 39 RBI.
