Sun Mar 2412:05Ian Happ's Recovery Has Plateaued
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ's (hamstring) recovery from a left-hamstring strain has plateaued, according to manager Craig Counsell. Happ hasn't played in a Cactus League game in three days and won't be in the spring lineup until Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals. He is focusing on exerted running. Counsell said Happ still isn't in danger of missing Opening Day next Thursday. "Goal is to put it behind him and it's not quite behind him," Counsell said. The 29-year-old could still avoid an injured list stint to begin the year, but fantasy managers shouldn't feel great about the possibility of Happ starting the year hot offensively, as he's also slashing just .111/.158/.167 with one RBI in 18 Cactus League at-bats. Happ was targeted as a No. 3 outfielder in fantasy drafts this spring.

Tue Mar 1918:59Ian Happ Playing Left Field Tuesday
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is back in left field and is batting sixth in the lineup for Tuesday night's Cactus League game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's Happ's first game back on defense since straining his hamstring in spring training on Feb. 29, although he had returned to game action on Sunday as the designated hitter. The 29-year-old will be fine for Opening Day on March 28 and will be Chicago's regular left fielder after hitting .248/.360/.431 with 21 home runs 84 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 158 games a year ago. The former ninth overall pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati made his first career All-Star appearance in 2022 and offers a solid floor as a No. 3 outfielder for fantasy managers. Happ has cleared the fences 20-plus times in two of the last three seasons.

Sun Mar 1712:34Ian Happ Back In Cactus League Lineup
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is serving as the designated hitter and batting leadoff in the team's Cactus League game on Sunday versus the Texas Rangers. It will be Happ's first time in a spring game since Feb. 29 after he was held out for over two weeks due to a right-hamstring strain. Barring a setback with his hamstring, the 29-year-old outfielder should return to playing defense by late next week and should be ready to go for Opening Day on March 28. The Cubs' starting left fielder, a former first-round pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati, had a solid year in 2023 after earning his first All-Star selection in 2022, slashing .248/.360/.431 with 21 homers, 84 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 691 plate appearances over 158 games. Happ doesn't do anything elite in any one category for fantasy managers, but he's a solid high-floor No. 3 fantasy outfielder.

Wed Mar 1316:01Ian Happ "On Track For Opening Day"
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said on Wednesday that outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is "on track for Opening Day." Happ is recovering from a left-hamstring strain in camp, but he's trending in the right direction and was able to face live pitching at spring training last week. Before the 29-year-old is allowed to get back into a Cactus League game, he's probably going to need to show the coaching staff that he can run at full speed without any setbacks. The switch-hitting outfielder was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and delivered another strong year in 2023, slashing .248/.360/.431 while setting career-highs in RBI (84), stolen bases (14) and runs scored (86) while also clubbing 21 home runs. Happ doesn't stand out in any one category for fantasy managers, but he makes for a solid No. 3 outfielder.

Wed Mar 615:20Ian Happ Taking Batting Practice Wednesday
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is taking batting practice in camp on Wednesday, which is a promising sign. Happ is recovering from a left-hamstring strain in spring training and is slowly working his way back. The Cubs are optimistic that the 29-year-old outfielder will still be ready for Opening Day on March 28, though, so fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried. The former first-round pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and slashed .248/.360/.431 with 21 home runs, 35 doubles, four triples, a career-high 84 RBI, a career-high 14 stolen bases and a career-high 86 runs scored in 158 games for the Cubbies in 2023. It was a good sign that Happ was more patient last year, and although he's not a standout in any fantasy categories, he makes for a solid No. 3 outfielder.

Sat Mar 213:28Ian Happ Dealing With Hamstring Strain
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is dealing with a mild left-hamstring strain in camp and won't get into Cactus League games for a bit, according to manager Craig Counsell. However, the Cubs remain optimistic that Happ will be ready for Opening Day at the end of March. The switch-hitting outfielder followed up his first All-Star campaign in 2022 with a .248/.360/.431 slash line, 21 home runs, 35 doubles, four triples, a career-high 84 RBI, a career-high 14 stolen bases and a career-high 86 runs scored in 691 trips to the plate over 158 games in 2023. Not only did Happ clear 20 homers for the third time in his career, but he also took more walks. The 29-year-old is solid across the board and has a solid floor as a No. 3 outfielder for fantasy managers.

Mon Jul 31 202318:20Ian Happ Rejoins Starting Lineup Monday
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is back in the starting lineup Monday versus the Cincinnati Reds and left-hander Andrew Abbott. Happ got a rare breather in Sunday's series finale against the rival Cardinals but he will get right back to it against another NL Central opponent on Monday. It's been another rock-solid season at the plate for the reliable veteran. Happ enters Monday's contest hitting .248 with 10 home runs, nine stolen bases, a massive 16.5% BB%, and a .776 OPS across 102 appearances on the season. He will be turned around to hit from the right side against the left-handed Abbott while manning left field out of the three-hole Monday night in Chicago.

Wed Jul 19 202300:17Ian Happ Exits Early Tuesday
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (undisclosed) exited Tuesday's 17-3 win over the Nationals in the seventh inning with an undisclosed injury, per Chicago Tribune's Meghan Montemurro. Manager David Ross said after the game, "Everybody's got a little something going on I would say to that extent." He also said the team would provide further updates on Wednesday. It sounds as though Happ is day-to-day for now, who went 2-for-3 with a single, a double, an RBI, a walk, a strikeout, and a stolen base before exiting. He has had a middling season to this point, slashing .248/.375/.393 with eight home runs, 42 RBI, and eight stolen bases.

Sat Jun 24 202316:33Ian Happ Launches Two Homers In Win
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ came ready to play for the London Series versus the St. Louis Cardinals. He blasted a home run off veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright in the second inning. He smacked another big fly a couple of innings later to record his 11th career multi-homer performance. The 28-year-old has a .268/.386/.430 slash line with seven home runs and 37 RBI this season. His performance here was certainly a big help in the Cubs 9-1 victory.

Fri Jun 16 202312:20Ian Happ Receives Rest Day
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ will be given the day off on Friday as the team faces the Baltimore Orioles and left-hander Cole Irvin. The Cubs will give Happ a day off against a southpaw after he went 5-for-12 with a home run, eight RBI and five runs scored in the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. The 28-year-old switch-hitter is only hitting .222 (10-for-45) this month, though, with a double, triple, homer and nine RBI in 13 games played. Happ has been much better from the left side of the plate against righties, too, with all five of his homers this year coming against them. With Happ starting on the bench Friday, Patrick Wisdom will start in left field and bat seventh in the lineup against Irvin.

Wed Jun 14 202316:57Ian Happ Back In Action Against Pirates
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (calf) is back in the team's starting lineup on Tuesday against the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Osvaldo Bido, who will be making his major-league debut. Happ is serving as the designated hitter and batting cleanup for the Cubbies. The 28-year-old left early on Tuesday with an injury to his right calf, but it obviously wasn't very serious at all, as he's back in there a day later. Happ hasn't been great so far in the month of June, going 6-for-35 (.171) with a homer, five RBI and nine strikeouts in 11 games, but he should be returned to starting lineups in single-year formats against a rookie pitcher. Overall, Happ is hitting .262 (60-for-229) with five homers, 27 RBI and five stolen bases in 2023.

Wed Jun 14 202309:24Ian Happ Dealing With Calf Injury
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (calf) was removed from Tuesday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates early after his right calf "grabbed on him," according to manager David Ross. The 28-year-old should be considered day-to-day, and Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that they will continue to see how he's doing Wednesday. Happ's putting together an all-around strong campaign through 65 games, batting .265 with five homers, 23 runs, 27 RBI, and five steals. If the former ninth-overall draft pick is forced to miss some action, expect Christopher Morel to see more playing time. The 23-year-old has gone deep 11 times already over 26 games while batting .267, so he looks like a solid waiver-wire option if he's still available.

Tue Jun 6 202301:29Ian Happ Reaches Three Times in Defeat
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks in a 5-0 shutout loss to the San Diego Padres on Monday. Offense was at a premium for the Cubbies on Monday as they had no answers for Blake Snell and company. Happ was the only Cub to reach three times but he never came close to scoring in this one. The 28-year-old has been quietly productive this season, slashing .271/.389/.401 to go along with four home runs, 23 RBI, and five stolen bases over 207 at-bats. He's slowed down at the dish lately and fantasy managers would like to see more in the way of home runs and RBI but the high on-base percentage and five thefts will certainly play.

Sat May 13 202302:49Ian Happ Smashes Three Hits Versus Minnesota

The 28-year-old outfielder has been finding his groove recently, maintaining a batting average of .357 across his last seven games. Looking at his overall season stats, Happ has been a consistent offensive contributor. He boasts a solid batting average of .321, four home runs, 18 RBI, and four stolen bases in the 36 games he has played thus far.

Mon May 1 202316:15Ian Happ Absent On Monday
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Washington Nationals. The switch-hitting outfielder will get a routine rest day here. It's a well deserved off day considering he's only sat out twice this season. Nelson Velazquez will cover left field and bat eighth against lefty MacKenzie Gore on Monday. Velazquez has been solid in his few at-bats this season, but probably not enough of a sample size to trust him in fantasy formats.

Tue Mar 7 202300:29Ian Happ "Would Love To Stay" With Cubs In 2024
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ said Monday that he "would love to stay" with the Cubs following the 2023 season. The 28-year-old agreed to a one-year, $10.85 million deal entering his final year of arbitration. Happ has had an up-and-down career with his bat but had a solid 2022 season, slashing .271/.342/.440 with 17 home runs, 72 RBI, and nine stolen bases. He could be one of baseball's more attractive free agents should he not agree to an extension with the Cubs. Happ offers power and speed for fantasy managers with the potential for a decent to slightly above-average batting average.

Sat Jan 14 202312:15Cubs, Ian Happ Avoid Salary Arbitration
The Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year, $10.85 million deal with outfielder Ian Happ on Friday to avoid salary arbitration. Happ is in the final year of arbitration and will be eligible to become a free agent after the 2023 season. The 28-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2022 in his sixth season with the Cubbies, and he hit .271/.342/.440 with a .781 OPS, 17 home runs, a career-high 72 RBI, career-high 72 runs scored and a career-high-tying nine stolen bases in 641 plate appearances and 158 games played. Happ should remain a solid source of power and on-base percentage as a starting outfielder for Chicago yet again in 2023. RotoBaller has him ranked just inside the top-50 fantasy outfield options.
