Wed Jul 26 202319:24Mariners Acquire Trent Thornton From Blue Jays
The Seattle Mariners acquired right-handed reliever Trent Thornton from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy, according to sources. The move comes after the Blue Jays designated Thornton for assignment last week when Toronto acquired reliever Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old hard-throwing right-hander came up as a starting-pitching prospect for the Jays, but he's worked mostly in relief since 2021. He pitched in just 5 1/3 innings at the big-league level for Toronto this year and he has a 4.77 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 98 walks and 249 strikeouts in 260 1/3 major-league innings in the last five years over 108 appearances (35 starts). Thornton won't suddenly have any fantasy value with the move to the American League West.
