Tue Dec 3 201900:40Nats 1B Zimmerman plans to be back with champs _ or retired
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman figures he’ll either find himself back with the World Series champions next season — or out of baseball.“I think I’ve made my intentions pretty clear,” Zimmerman said Monday night, when he attended the premiere of a documentary about last season’s title. “It’s either play some more here or play more golf.”The 35-year-old Zimmerman is the only player who has appeared for the Nationals in all 15 of their seasons since the franchise moved to the nation’s capital from Montreal in 2005. He was the team’s first pick in the amateur draft that year. The club declined its $18 million option for next season on Zimmerman, who received a $2 million buyout and became a free agent. But he expects to return to Washington.“Both sides want something to happen. So it’s just a matter of getting something done,” he said. “We’ll see what happens, but I’m not too worried about it.”Zimmerman, who has earned more than $125 million in his big league... [More]

Fri Apr 26 201917:48Nationals Carter Kieboom for big league debut
WASHINGTON (AP) — Carter Kieboom's rapid rise through the Washington Nationals' minor league system is complete, and perhaps no one is more amazed than the infielder himself. The 28th overall pick in the 2016 amateur draft was set to make his major league debut against San Diego on Friday night, batting ninth and playing shortstop."This whole thing's crazy to me," Kieboom said. "I was in high school three years ago doing art projects and stuff. It's hard to even describe it. I think it's going to really set in when I take the field for the first time and get my first hit, get my first out on defense. There's going to be a lot of firsts out there, and they're all going to feel really good."Washington opted not to bring Kieboom up when incumbent shortstop Trea Turner suffered a broken right index finger on April 2. At the time, Kieboom had yet to play above Double A.Kieboom hit .379 with three home runs and 18 RBIs with Triple-A Fresno, leading the Pacific Coast League with 16 walks. He was... [More]

Tue Mar 27 201819:00Zimmerman sits out yet again in Nats' last exhibition game
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ryan Zimmerman fielded his position in a drizzle before the Washington Nationals' last exhibition game. Then he joined teammates for batting practice. Even took some trips around the basepaths, expending enough energy in the chill to redden his face. And then, when it was time for what became reigning NL East champion Washington's 3-1 loss against the Minnesota Twins to begin Tuesday, Zimmerman did what he so often did during spring training this year: He sat out.Taking an unusual approach to February and March, Zimmerman hit on back fields and faced pitchers destined for the minor leagues instead of playing in Grapefruit League games. He finished with two official at-bats. The 33-year-old first baseman insists he's healthy, insists he's ready for the regular season and insists — as does Nationals manager Dave Martinez — that he will play on opening day."I practiced. I did BP every day with the team. It's not like I was sitting in the clubhouse watching TV. I did all the... [More]
