Thu Apr 1800:15Chad Green Managing Shoulder Soreness
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green (shoulder) was unavailable during Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the division-rival New York Yankees due to shoulder soreness he felt following Monday's appearance against the Yankees. Manager John Schneider hopes Green is good to go by Friday for the start of a three-game weekend set on the road against the San Diego Padres. The 32-year-old right-hander picked up two saves and helped bridge the gap until Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson were able to rejoin Toronto's bullpen on Tuesday, and he has a strong 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out seven batters and walking two over 7 2/3 innings during the 2024 regular season. With that said, Green doesn't hold a whole lot of fantasy appeal at the moment outside of leagues that weigh holds.

Wed Apr 1009:14Chad Green Locks Down Second Save
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green picked up his second save of the season on Tuesday versus the Seattle Mariners. The veteran tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed a walk with one strikeout. Green has now appeared in five games and allowed two runs, but has been perfect in two save opportunities. It's encouraging to see Green in a high leverage role after dealing with injuries the past couple of seasons, but his time as a closer is nearing its end with closer Jordan Romano (elbow) and eighth inning arm Erik Swanson (forearm) both on their rehab assignments and nearing their returns. Regardless, Green can still have value in leagues that count holds.

Sat Apr 600:46Chad Green Nabs Save Against Former Team
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green secured Friday's save in the 3-0 win over the division-rival New York Yankees, yielding two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. Friday was technically Toronto's first save situation of the season, but Green notched a win in Tuesday's victory over the Houston Astros after working the ninth frame. His usage suggests he's first in line for save situations until the Jays get star closer Jordan Romano (elbow) and setup man Erik Swanson (forearm) back from the injured list, making Green worth a fantasy add as a short-term source of saves for the time being. The 32-year-old right-hander missed most of 2023 in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he's given up only one run with one strikeout over 3 1/3 frames to begin the year. He's not worth a sizable chunk of fantasy managers' FAABs with Romano's return appearing not far off, though.

Wed Mar 2719:31Chad Green To Lead Closer Committee In Toronto?
TSN's Scott Mitchell writes that the Toronto Blue Jays will use a closer-by-committee setup and matchup-based choices to open the season with relievers Jordan Romano (elbow) and Erik Swanson (forearm) starting the year on the injured list. Mitchell says that his pecking order for saves would be Chad Green first, followed by Yimi Garcia and Tim Mayza. Green, 32, has 11 career saves in eight big-league seasons and posted a career-worst 5.25 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, four walks and 16 K's in just 12 innings last year in Toronto in his return from Tommy John surgery. He struck out 11 hitters in 7 2/3 Grapefruit League innings this spring but also allowed seven runs. While Green might get first crack at saves in Toronto to open the year, the fact that both Garcia and Mayza could also be involved means that fantasy managers shouldn't invest much in any of these three names off the waiver wire.

Wed Mar 2019:48Chad Green, Yimi Garcia Could Be Options For Saves Early On
With both Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers Jordan Romano (elbow) and Erik Swanson (forearm) dealing with injuries with Opening Day right around the corner next week, Chad Green and Yimi Garcia are two clear candidates to fill in for the closer role if Romano and Swanson aren't ready or are eased back in. Nate Pearson could also be a candidate to make the Opening Day roster if one or both of Romano and/or Swanson are on the injured list. Green has just 11 career saves, but he has enough high-leverage experience to know the ropes. Garcia saved 15 games for the Marlins in 2021 and stepped into the role a few times in Toronto last year when Romano was available, making him the best one to speculate on in deep fantasy leagues.

Mon Nov 6 202318:16Blue Jays Pick Up Chad Green's Two-Year Option
The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Monday that they exercised their $21 million two-year option on relief pitcher Chad Green. The 32-year-old veteran right-hander only tossed 12 innings in 12 appearances out of the bullpen in 2023 after debuting in September in his return from Tommy John surgery he had in June of 2022. Unsurprisingly, Green wasn't all that effective, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits while walking four and striking out 16. He has 11 career saves in his eight big-league seasons and could be a valuable late-inning bullpen piece for Toronto the next two years if he can stay healthy. Green has a career 3.24 ERA (3.27 FIP) and 1.03 WHIP with a 6.4 percent walk rate and 32.4 percent strikeout rate in 395 2/3 innings pitched.

Fri Sep 1 202320:01Chad Green Activated From Injured List
The Toronto Blue Jays activated right-hander Chad Green (elbow) from the 60-day injured list and first baseman Spencer Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday and moved pitcher Hagen Danner (oblique) to the 60-day injured list to make room for Green on the active roster. Green will be making his 2023 and team debut after coming back from Tommy John surgery. The 32-year-old veteran reliever looked good in the minors and will give Toronto's bullpen more length as they try to secure a wild-card spot in the American League. Green could become an option for those in deep holds leagues down the stretch. Horwitz, the club's No. 17 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will return to the big leagues after playing in three games for Toronto earlier this year. He'll serve as first base depth with rosters expanding.

Mon Aug 28 202312:33Chad Green To Be Activated Soon
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green (elbow, head), who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery in May of 2022, was hit in the head by a throw from his catcher in a minor-league rehab game with Triple-A Buffalo on Aug. 8. He cleared the concussion protocol and returned to the mound on Aug. 16. Green is finally reaching the final days of a long rehab process. He was scheduled to pitch on back-to-back days over the weekend before being activated from the injured list on Sept. 1, at the latest. The 32-year-old will be making his 2023 debut when he gets into a game for the Blue Jays and will give Toronto some more bullpen depth down the stretch as they attempt to get into the postseason.

Thu Aug 17 202308:54Chad Green Rehabbing Again
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chad Green (elbow, head) resumed his rehab assignment on Wednesday, going 1 1/3 innings and should need just a couple more appearances before returning to the big leagues. The 32-year-old is trying to recover from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in May of last season. During his first rehab stint, though, Green was hit in the head with a thrown ball but recently cleared concussion protocol. For his career, he owns a 3.17 ERA, 32.5% strikeout rate, and 1.02 WHIP with 11 saves across seven seasons and could find himself in a late-inning role once he's back.

Tue Aug 8 202321:48Chad Green Leaves Rehab Game With Head Injury
Toronto Blue Jays reliever Chad Green (elbow, head) was in the middle of a rehab game with Triple-A Buffalo before getting hit in the head from a throw, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. He left the game under his own power, but he's day-to-day for now. Green has been on the injured list all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. Over his seven-year career, the right-hander owns a 3.17 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 32.5% strikeout rate with 11 saves. It's unclear what role the club uses Green in, but there's a chance he can pitch in some-high leverage situations, giving him some value in hold leagues when he eventually returns to the big leagues.

Tue Jun 20 202309:26Chad Green Facing Live Hitters Again On Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chad Green (elbow) is set to throw a live bullpen session on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The 32-year-old began tossing to hitters on May 30 and continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery that has kept him out of action since May of last season. Green owns a career 3.17 ERA, 32.5% strikeout rate, and 1.20 WHIP with 11 saves and 52 holds. The team expects the former 11th-rounder to be back at some point in the second half of the season, and though he won't get many save opportunities, he should pitch his way into a high-leverage role.

Tue Jan 31 202315:20Blue Jays Sign Chad Green
The Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly signed free-agent relief pitcher Chad Green to a multi-year deal, per a tweet from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday. Rosenthal tweeted the following: "Source confirms: Free-agent reliever Chad Green to Blue Jays on 2-year, $8.5M deal. Second year is conditional player option that Green can exercise if Jays decline 3-year club option. If both decline, Jays get 2-year club option at higher AAV. First: @MarinoMLB, @ShiDavidi." Green appeared in 14 games for the New York Yankees this past season, pitching to a 3.00 ERA, a 2.85 FIP, 16 strikeouts, and five walks in 15 innings of work, logging a save, three holds, and a pitcher win in the process. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery early this past summer. For his career, the 31-year-old has logged a 3.17 ERA, a 3.37 FIP, 494 strikeouts, and 96 walks in 383.2 Major League innings to go along with 11 saves and 52 holds.

Sun May 22 202213:14Chad Green To Undergo Tommy John Surgery
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. The 30-year-old had been undergoing tests on his elbow over the past few days, and the team had been speculating that Green was likely to miss extended time. Green racked up three holds and a save this year while pitching to a 3.00 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. His presence will be missed in the Yankees' bullpen. Expect to see relievers such as Jonathan Loaisiga and Michael King take on bigger roles with Green out.

Sat May 21 202209:32Chad Green Placed On Injured List With Elbow Strain
The New York Yankees have placed relief pitcher Chad Green (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain. Fellow right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio was called up from Triple-A to take his roster spot. Green has had some tests run on his arm over the past few days. The Yankees haven't released any specifics in regards to what the tests have revealed, but the expectation is that Green is facing an extended absence. The 30-year-old has appeared in 14 games this year and he's pitched to a 3.00 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP while racking up three holds and a save. Luckily for the Bronx Bombers, the team has a loaded bullpen that should be able to capably manage high-leverage innings even with Green out.

Thu May 19 202215:46Chad Green Injured Thursday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green (forearm) left the game early on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles with right forearm discomfort, according to the team. Green threw just 11 pitches before exiting the contest with a trainer, and he will be re-evaluated on Friday. The 30-year-old right-hander came into Thursday's affair with a 3.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, one save, five walks and 15 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings over 13 relief appearances for the Yankees. He has served in a middle-relief role alongside Michael King, Wandy Peralta and Miguel Castro in New York's bullpen. Check back on Friday, when we should have a better idea of how serious Green's forearm injury is.

Tue May 3 202200:07Chad Green Earns Second Save Of Season Monday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green picked up his second save of the season in Monday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays. Green came in to pitch the ninth inning up by a run and shut the door, pitching a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. The 30-year-old has now converted two of four save opportunities with a win, two holds, and a 3.48 ERA this season. He is second on the team in save opportunities but is clearly being Aroldis Chapman, who has seen six save opportunities and picked up saves in the team's previous two games. As such, Green holds limited fantasy value at this time except perhaps in deeper roto leagues.

Fri Oct 1 202110:49Chad Green Strikes Out Three In Relief
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green spun a scoreless frame in relief in a victory over the Blue Jays Thursday. Green allowed one hit but struck out three batters, generating an impressive six whiffs, all of them on his fastball. The veteran has been outstanding lately- as he's pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a row while racking up nine punchouts to just one walk. Green should continue to be a solid reliever for both the Yankees and fantasy managers.

Fri Aug 20 202113:14Chad Green Locks Down Sixth Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green locked down his sixth save of the year Thursday night, allowing one run on one hit in an inning of work. The run came via a solo home run by Miguel Sano, and Green struck out two batters in the outing. Even with Aroldis Chapman back from the injured list, Green looks to be the Yankee reliever to roster. He's received the majority of opportunities of late, and Chapman faltered in his first appearance Wednesday. Green has a 3.13 ERA, a 0.85 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings this season.

Wed Aug 18 202101:44Chad Green Earns Fifth Save In Nightcap
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green earned his fifth save of the year Tuesday, closing out the second game of the doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox. Green didn't allow a baserunner, striking out one batter in his inning of work. Green appears to be the primary closer option for manager Aaron Boone with Aroldis Chapman injured, but fellow reliever Jonathan Loaisiga is seeing opportunities as well. Green also has 15 holds to his name this year, making him a better investment in leagues that reward the statistic, but he has some short-term value in traditional leagues as well.

Wed Aug 11 202118:59Chad Green Fans Three In Sixth Victory
New York Yankees relief pitcher Chad Green earned his sixth win of the season Wednesday against the Royals. Green looked sharp, firing 24 of 31 pitches for strikes en route to two scoreless frames, including three strikeouts. He generated six swinging strikes, four of them coming on his curveball, which has a whiff rate of 33.6 percent this year- and an opponent batting average of just .197. The Yankees haven't utilized Green in the closer role yet sans Aroldis Chapman (elbow), though the former has excelled no matter the situation, pitching to a 3.05 ERA with a 66:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 59 innings while picking up 15 holds and three saves.
