Fri Mar 809:13Jack Flaherty Roughed Up
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty got roughed up in his third outing of the Grapefruit League against the New York Yankees. Over 1 2/3 innings, the offseason addition allowed three hits, four runs, three walks and struck out three. The 28-year-old was once one the better starting pitchers in the league, but injuries have derailed his career over the past three seasons. The move to Comerica Park should benefit the righty, but he still has a lot to prove to earn a spot in most formats at the moment. For now, he is watch-list candidate and that's solely based on previous success in the big leagues.

Mon Feb 2614:44Jack Flaherty Tosses Perfect Inning In Spring Debut
Detroit Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty worked a perfect inning in his spring debut with the team on Monday versus the Houston Astros. The veteran was brought into Detroit on a one-year, $14 million deal this offseason after he struggled between the Cardinals and Orioles in the 2023 campaign. The 28-year-old posted a 4.99 ERA across 29 outings (27 starts) but struggled mightily following a trade-deadline deal to the O's where he posted a 6.75 ERA in 34 2/3 innings of work. However, the 2023 season was also his healthiest full campaign since 2019, and he will get a shot at taking the ball every fifth day with the Tigers in 2024. He could be a solid late-round sleeper as he posted a 3.22 ERA as recently as the 2021 season and is coming off his first healthy offseason in some time.

Thu Dec 14 202321:01Jack Flaherty Goes To Tigers On One-Year Deal
Free-agent right-hander Jack Flaherty agreed on a one-year, $14 million with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Flaherty was in the National League Cy Young race in 2019 with the St. Louis Cardinals but was limited by injuries several years later and hasn't quite been the same since with ERAs over 4.00 each of the last two years. In 2023 with the Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles, Flaherty was pretty hittable, posting a 4.99 ERA (4.36 FIP) and 1.58 WHIP with a career-high 66 walks and 148 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings covering 29 appearances (27 starts). The 28-year-old did have a 25.5 percent strikeout rate and only a 7.3% walk rate last year, though, so he will have some bounce-back potential as a late-round flier in deep leagues in one of the best divisions for pitchers in the American League Central.

Mon Dec 11 202314:48Michael Wacha, Jack Flaherty Being Eyed By Royals
The Kansas City Royals are casting a wide net in search of starting pitching this offseason and have shown interest in right-handers Michael Wacha and Jack Flaherty. The two veterans aren't the only starters linked to the club as Marcus Stroman, Lucas Giolito, and Seth Lugo have also reportedly been on the club's radar. Wacha enjoyed a fine season in 2023 as he posted a 3.22 ERA across 24 starts with the Padres one season after working to a similar 3.32 ERA in 23 outings with the Red Sox. Unsurprisingly, he opted out of a $6.5 million player option following the season. On the flip side, Flaherty largely struggled between the Cardinals and Orioles a season ago, tossing a 4.99 ERA across 144 1/3 innings, including a 6.75 ERA in 34 2/3 frames following a trade-deadline deal to Baltimore.

Mon Dec 4 202314:26Pirates Checking In On Jack Flaherty
Free-agent pitcher Jack Flaherty is being eyed by the Pittsburgh Pirates for a short-term deal should he be unable to land a longer deal on the open market. The right-hander burst onto the scene with a 3.34 ERA across 28 starts as a 22-year-old in the 2018 season, but injuries and underperformance have been constant in recent seasons. He split the 2023 campaign between the Cardinals and Orioles, working to a 4.99 ERA across 29 appearances (27 starts) but was also tattooed for a 6.75 ERA across seven starts and nine appearances following a trade-deadline deal from St. Louis to Baltimore. Still just 28 years old and with a nice track record of success earlier in his career, Flaherty should have a solid market in free agency, whether it be for the short or long term.

Tue Sep 19 202322:48Jack Flaherty Being Moved To Bullpen
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty is being moved to the bullpen for at least the short term and he will be available in relief on Tuesday against the Houston Astros, according to manager Brandon Hyde. The skipper wouldn't rule out a potential return to the starting rotation for Flaherty down the road, possibly in the postseason. The former St. Louis Cardinals starter just hasn't been good in his seven starts for the O's after being acquired in a trade from St. Louis, as he's gone 1-3 in those seven starts while allowing 26 runs (25 earned) on 41 hits (seven homers) while walking 12 and striking out 38 in 31 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old will now lose what little fantasy value he had left to close out 2023.

Sat Aug 26 202321:48Jack Flaherty Expected To Start Sunday Versus Colorado
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty (general soreness) will start Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. He was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday versus the Blue Jays due to general soreness. The 27-year-old was rocked for seven runs over three innings in his previous start. He owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and a 125:62 K: BB across 123 2/3 innings in 2023. Flaherty has struggled recently by posting a 7.07 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP over his last three starts. Despite his recent struggles, Flaherty can be used as a streamer in a plus matchup against the Rockies.

Wed Aug 23 202316:57Jack Flaherty Dealing With "General Soreness"
Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that right-hander Jack Flaherty is dealing with "general soreness" that occurs between starts, which is why he didn't make his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hyde said the team is taking a precaution, but it remains to be seen if Flaherty will be able to make his next start. If the 27-year-old is able to make his next start, fantasy managers should be hesitant to rely on him. In his three starts with Baltimore since coming over at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals, he's allowed 11 earned runs on 14 hits (two homers) while walking and fanning 19 in 14 innings against the Jays, Astros and Padres.

Wed Aug 23 202316:40Jack Flaherty Dealing With Undisclosed Issue
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty (undisclosed) said he didn't make his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays because of an undisclosed issue. "Sometimes you just don't bounce back the way you want to," Flaherty said. In his last start against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 15, Flaherty was hit hard to the tune of seven earned runs in just three innings in his third start with the O's. Apparently he isn't feeling that great after that outing, and he's unsure when he'll make his next start for the team. Flaherty has also allowed 11 runs in 14 innings in his three starts since Baltimore acquired him at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Wed Aug 23 202312:21Dean Kremer Replaces Jack Flaherty On Wednesday
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer is replacing right-hander Jack Flaherty for the start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. There wasn't a reason given for the move to Kremer, so stay tuned for more information on Flaherty's status for the rest of the week. The Orioles are listing Thursday's starter as TBA for now. In Flaherty's last outing on Aug. 15 against the San Diego Padres on the road, he was blasted for seven runs in three innings, so perhaps the O's want to give him some extra rest before his next start. Kremer has been pretty solid in his last five starts dating back to July 24, allowing 11 earned runs on 23 hits (three homers) while walking 12 and striking out 23 in 29 1/3 innings.

Wed Aug 2 202319:21Jack Flaherty To Make Orioles Debut Thursday
Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his debut with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday when he faces off against the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. The Orioles acquired Flaherty at the trade deadline on Tuesday for prospects Cesar Prieto and Drew Rom. The 27-year-old will try to help the O's make the postseason in 2023. The move to Baltimore isn't the best landing spot for Flaherty in a hitter's ballpark and in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. On top of that, he'll have an avoidable matchup for fantasy purposes on the road against the Blue Jays on Thursday. Flaherty went 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA (4.22 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 54 walks and 106 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings over 20 starts for the Cardinals before getting traded.

Tue Aug 1 202319:16Orioles Acquire Jack Flaherty
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. The O's needed to make a move to improve their rotation and getting Flaherty should help them. He has registered a 4.43 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, with a 106/54 K/BB ratio across 20 starts this season. In exchange, the Cardinals will receive infielder Cesar Prieto and left-hander Drew Rom from the O's. Flaherty is set to become a free agent after this season, so he'll be a short term rental for the Orioles playoff push.

Sat Jul 1 202312:20Jack Flaherty To Start Game 1 Against Yankees
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty (hip) will start Game 1 of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees on Saturday, with left-hander Matthew Liberatore set to go in Game 2. Flaherty had his last turn in the starting rotation skipped last weekend in London against the division-rival Chicago Cubs due to hip discomfort. The 27-year-old has struggled in 2023 to the tune of a 4.95 ERA (4.20 FIP), 1.60 WHIP, 44 walks, 80 strikeouts and a league-high eight hit by pitches in 80 innings over his 15 starts. However, he'll be on plenty of rest and is facing a Yankees lineup without All-Star slugger Aaron Judge (toe).

Sat Jun 24 202312:14Jack Flaherty Scratched From Sunday Start
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty (hip) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday in London against the division-rival Chicago Cubs due to right-hip tightness, according to manager Oliver Marmol. It's unclear if the injury will force the 27-year-old to the injured list, so fantasy managers will need to check back for more updates on Flaherty in the coming days. The Cardinals haven't announced a replacement to start on Sunday. Perhaps the hip injury explains why Flaherty has allowed 12 runs on 20 hits while walking four and striking out eight in his last two starts against the Giants and Nationals to raise his season ERA to 4.95 (4.20 FIP) over 15 starts (80 innings).

Tue Jun 20 202315:07Jack Flaherty Roughed Up For Six Runs, Wins Anyway
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty threw 6 1/3 innings in Monday's 8-6 victory over the Washington Nationals. The 27-year-old struck out five during his fourth win, but he was lifted by the offense in this one. It was Flaherty's second straight outing allowing 10 hits and six runs, not exactly something he'll want to keep a habit of. Most of the right-hander's work to rebuild his ERA after a 10-run bruising versus the Los Angeles Angels on May 4 has been erased with these setbacks. A 2023 post-hype sleeper candidate, the oft-injured Flaherty hasn't been up to snuff in consummating that status. It's fair to wonder at this point if the Cardinals explore trade opportunities with their former ace on an expiring deal. Flaherty carries an unreliable 4.95 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 80:44 K:BB into a shy-away matchup with the Houston Astros next Tuesday.

Wed Jun 14 202300:16Jack Flaherty Struggles Again In Tuesday Loss
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty fell to 3-5 in Tuesday's 11-3 loss to the Giants. Flaherty pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and three walks with three strikeouts. He also hit a batter. The 27-year-old has been highly inconsistent this season, showcasing strikeout potential but also a serious lack of command. He now owns a 4.64 ERA with a 9.16 K/9 rate and a 5.25 BB/9 rate through 14 starts. His next start should be a favorable one in theory at the Nationals, but fantasy managers should be hesitant to start him until he can show more consistency, particularly in roto leagues.

Sun May 21 202309:33Jack Flaherty Aims To Build On Best Start Of 2023
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty is coming off of his most dominant effort of the season as he does battle with the hard-hitting Los Angeles Dodgers lineup on Sunday. In the 27-year-old's previous start on May 15 against the Milwaukee Brewers, he missed a season-high 10 bats and lasted seven innings for the first time this year en route to his third victory. Flaherty struggled against the Dodgers earlier this campaign, but he still owns a superb 2.34 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with 52 strikeouts across 34 2/3 career innings versus Los Angeles. The right-hander constitutes as a very intriguing DFS play who may not garner a ton of ownership on Sunday's slate.

Thu May 4 202314:38Jack Flaherty Leaves Early Thursday Following Comebacker
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty left Thursday's contest with the Angels after being hit on the hand by a comebacker. The right-hander was struggling mightily prior to departing and ended up being charged with 10 earned runs on nine hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch while striking out three across just 2 1/3 innings pitched. After yielding just three earned runs over his first three starts of the season, the 27-year-old has surrendered 21 runs over his last four outings spanning 19 innings of work. Flaherty's season-long ERA now sits at an elevated 6.29 while it's not clear whether or not he will be able to make his next scheduled start on Tuesday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

Tue Apr 18 202300:46Jack Flaherty Walks Three, Takes Loss Monday
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty fell to 1-2 in Monday's 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. Flaherty pitched six innings, allowing four runs on four hits (including a solo home run) and three walks with four strikeouts. While his overall numbers look good, walks have been a major issue for the 27-year-old. He now has a 2.95 ERA, 7.17 K/9 rate, and 7.17 BB/9 rate. Fantasy managers have probably gotten away with starting Flaherty in points leagues, but having as many walks as strikeouts is not a recipe for success in roto leagues. He will look to wrangle his control in his next start at the Mariners.

Mon Mar 6 202312:15Jack Flaherty Starting Against Astros Monday
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty (calf, illness) is making the Grapefruit League start on Monday against the Houston Astros. Flaherty has been dealing with a minor calf issue and was scratched from his scheduled spring debut on Sunday with flu-like symptoms. The 27-year-old starter is expected to go around three innings in his first Grapefruit League appearance. Flaherty should have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day, but fantasy managers probably aren't chomping at the bit to draft him in 2023 after made just nine appearances (eight starts) for the Red Birds in 2022 due to injuries. There's a good chance he'll face innings restrictions this year after throwing only 190 2/3 frames in the last three years combined.
