Fri Oct 13 202312:19Matt Strahm Secures First Postseason Save
Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Matt Strahm was called upon to close the door on the division-rival Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Thursday night and he got the job done, pitching a scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout for his first career postseason save. The Phillies used primary closer Craig Kimbrel in the eighth inning for the hold against the Braves best hitters. Strahm hasn't been great in his career in the playoffs dating back to 2020, but he's been excellent for the Phillies so far this year in three relief appearances, going 2 1/3 shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out one. It's unlikely he'll be in line for another save chance the rest of the way as Philly heads into the NLCS against the upstart Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tue May 23 202309:20Matt Strahm Starting Tuesday's Contest
Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm is taking the hill to start Tuesday's matchup with Ryne Nelson and the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. The versatile pitcher began 2023 in the rotation but moved to the bullpen following his May 2 start. Strahm's pitched to excellent numbers, posting a 2.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 36.2% strikeout rate, and 7.7% walk rate with four wins and a save. The Phillies don't expect the 31-year-old to pitch far into the game, as Dylan Covey is scheduled to get the bulk of the innings in relief. Since Strahm's exit from the rotation, his fantasy value has been very limited, and it should remain that way unless he finds himself back as a regular starting pitcher.

Mon May 8 202302:22Matt Strahm Records First Save
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm recorded his first save of the season on Sunday, pitching two scoreless innings in a 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. The lefty came into this one with a 4-1 lead, and when the Phillies added runs, they let Strahm finish it. This was his first relief appearance since being removed from the starting rotation after his last start, and the good news is that the Phillies seem to want to use him in high-leverage situations. They haven't gotten great pitching from their high-leverage arms, so Strahm could see his share of holds and even the occasional save or two if he continues to pitch well, making him an option in save-plus-holds leagues.

Thu Apr 27 202318:53Matt Strahm Hurls A Gem Thursday
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm tossed a gem in a winning effort over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon. The left-hander worked 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball while allowing just two hits and zero walks against five strikeouts on the afternoon. He evened his season record to 2-2 despite receiving just one run of support in a tight 1-0 victory over the visiting Mariners. Strahm had yielded six earned runs on the back of two homers and five walks across eight innings over his last two starts despite striking out a hefty 17 batters in that time. The southpaw lowered his ERA to a tidy 2.31 mark following Thursday's outing as he looks to keep up the good work in his next scheduled start Tuesday in Los Angeles against a tough Dodgers lineup.

Fri Apr 21 202308:42Matt Strahm Tagged With Thursday's Loss
Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Matt Strahm took the loss Thursday when the Colorado Rockies defeated his club 5-0. The 31-year-old gave up three runs over 5.1 innings while walking two. But fantasy managers have to be impressed with his start, as Strahm punched out 11 batters during the contest. He now owns a 3.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 38.0% strikeout rate, and a 9.9% walk rate across four starts. It's Strahm's first year as a starting pitcher since 2019 when he started 16 games with the San Diego Padres. It isn't certain who'll be the odd man out once Ranger Suarez (forearm) returns, but for now, the former 21st-round draft pick is a must roster.

Sun Mar 26 202318:22Matt Strahm To Begin Season As Starter
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm will begin the season as the fifth starter, according to manager Rob Thompson. It was reported earlier in the spring that Strahm was going to be a multi-inning reliever this season. However, the injury to Ranger Suarez (forearm) has changed the Phillies plans for Strahm. He's expected to throw around 65-70 pitches during his first outing as a starter. The expectation is that Strahm will head back to the bullpen once Suarez is back. It's unlikely that Strahm pitches deep into games considering he's not stretched out to start. He'll be a risky streaming option in his first start against the New York Yankees.

Thu Mar 16 202320:02Matt Strahm To Be Multi-Inning Reliever
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm is expected to have a multi-inning role to begin the season. The left-hander signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Phillies over the offseason. It sounds like the team is going their value out of Strahm by making him a multiple inning option. Manager Rob Thompson mentioned he wants Strahm to be built up to three innings by the end of spring training. There won't be a ton of fantasy value here considering Strahm probably won't be starting or closing in Philly. There could be spot starts mixed in, but that would likely be the only time that Strahm is only to have fantasy value in Philly.

Fri Dec 9 202213:37Phillies Officially Sign Matt Strahm
The Philadelphia Phillies officially signed free-agent left-hander Matt Strahm to a two-year deal on Friday, according to president of baseball operations David Dombrowski. Strahm will make $15 million on the two-year deal. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever will make an improving Phillies bullpen better in 2023. He posted a 3.83 ERA (3.72 FIP), a 1.23 WHIP, his first four career saves and 52 strikeouts in 44 2/3 relief innings over 50 appearances for the Boston Red Sox last season. Strahm could have some appeal in holds leagues as a setup man in Philadelphia, but he's unlikely to see many save chances, if any at all over the course of the season. Strahm has a career 3.81 ERA (4.03 FIP), a 1.21 WHIP and a 25.3 percent strikeout rate in seven big-league seasons.

Wed Dec 7 202200:26Phillies Reportedly Close To Deal With Matt Strahm
The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly close to a two-year, $15 million deal with free-agent relief pitcher Matt Strahm, the Athletic's Matt Gelb reported Tuesday. The left-hander had a successful 2022 season out of the bullpen for the Red Sox, posting a 3.83 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 26.9% strikeout rate with 12 holds and four saves in 50 appearances. While the Phillies did cycle through several options at closer last season, it seems unlikely that Strahm would fill a significant high-leverage role, limiting his fantasy value.

Fri Aug 19 202216:31Matt Strahm Reinstated From Injured List
The Boston Red Sox reinstated left-hander Matt Strahm (wrist) from the 15-day injured list on Friday and optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Strahm missed over a month with a bruised left wrist after he was hit by a comebacker. Before his injury, the 30-year-old southpaw had a 3.58 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and a 32:7 K:BB in 27 2/3 relief innings. Strahm also has three saves on the season, and he could be part of the team's closer-by-committee situation down the stretch along with names like Garrett Whitlock, John Schreiber and Matt Barnes.

Thu Aug 18 202216:39Matt Strahm Expected To Return Friday
Boston Red Sox reliever Matt Strahm (wrist) will likely be activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Baltimore Orioles, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. The 30-year-old lefty has been sidelined since taking a comebacker off his wrist on July 12. He made a rehab outing on Tuesday in Triple-A and retired all three batters he faced. Strahm will look to pick up right where he left off, which includes a 3.58 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and .248 OBA along with an impressive 10.41 K/9 and 2.28 BB/9.

Sun Aug 7 202211:35Matt Strahm Expected To Throw Bullpen Tuesday
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that left-handed reliever Matt Strahm (wrist) is playing catch and "there's a good chance he'll throw a bullpen on Aug. 9." Strahm was hit on the left wrist by a line drive on July 12 against the Tampa Bay Rays, but X-rays came back negative. It remains unclear if the Red Sox will send the 30-year-old southpaw on a minor league rehab assignment, but either way, he's nearing a return to Boston's big-league bullpen. Although Strahm does have three saves this year, there's not a ton of fantasy value in his left arm. He's sporting a 3.58 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 32 strikeouts and seven walks in 27 2/3 innings pitched this year.

Thu Jun 9 202211:45Matt Strahm Picks Up Third Save Wednesday
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Strahm picked up his third save of the season on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. John Schreiber opened the ninth inning for Boston, but they turned to Strahm after he picked up his second save of the year on Tuesday. Meanwhile, skipper Alex Cora confirmed that reliever Tanner Houck will be used in one- and two-inning situations, similar to how they used Garrett Whitlock last season. Boston's closing situation is still very unclear, but Strahm now has now locked down back-to-back save chances and appears to be emerging as the favorite for ninth-inning duties alongside Houck, Schreiber and Jake Diekman.

Tue May 17 202212:50Matt Strahm Earns Win In Relief Monday
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Strahm earned the win in Monday night's 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. He allowed one hit. Strahm has been the strongest member of the Boston bullpen so far this year, recording a 2.13 ERA and 0.71 WHIP with 14 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings. With the closer situation heavily in flux, Strahm could stand to inherit the role at some point. He already has one save and three holds to his name in 15 appearances, and manager Alex Cora seems bound to recognize that Strahm might just be his best ninth-inning option, though Hansel Robles earned the save in this one.

Sun Mar 13 202210:47Matt Strahm Joins Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent relief pitcher Matt Strahm to a $3 million deal on Sunday. Strahm had a rough 2021 campaign, throwing only 6 2/3 innings due to right knee inflammation while allowing six earned runs in six outings for the San Diego Padres. The 30-year-old southpaw was much better in 2020, posting a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP while striking out 15 and walking four in 20 2/3 innings. Injuries have been an issue for Strahm the last two years, but when he's healthy, he can be a strong lefty bullpen arm. He has a career 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 260 innings over 157 outings (25 starts) for the Padres and Kansas City Royals in six major league seasons. Strahm won't carry any fantasy value to Boston.

Wed Aug 18 202113:54Matt Strahm Lands On Injured List
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Matt Strahm (knee) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. He has been banged up all season long, but did serve as the opener on Tuesday. Veteran right-hander Jake Arrieta will take over his spot in the rotation and make the start against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. This is not a favorable matchup for Arrieta who has 6.88 ERA in 20 starts with the Chicago Cubs. Fantasy managers can stay far away from Arrieta right now.

Tue Aug 3 202115:42Matt Strahm To Be Activated On Tuesday
San Diego Padres reliever Matt Strahm (knee) is expected to be activated from the IL before Tuesday's tilt with the Oakland Athletics. After undergoing offseason knee surgery, the left-hander had fanned seven over 3 frames in a rehab assignment at Triple-A. With a starting rotation in flux, Strahm's return will bolster the Friars pitching depth and he should assume various roles in high leverage and long relief. The 29-year-old has been a stalwart for the Friars the past three seasons, appearing in 106 games while registering a 3.66 ERA and 9.2 K/9. He's a flyer pickup in holds formats for ratio support and a handful of rogue victories, but isn't a fantasy option in standard leagues.
