Mon Mar 1111:07Frankie Montas Named Opening Day Starter
Manager David Bell announced on Sunday that Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas will be the team's Opening Day starter. This is a bit of a surprise with young 2017 first-round draft pick Hunter Greene in the mix, but Greene hasn't made a statement this spring that he's ready to be the guy, continuing to walk too many batters (seven walks in three spring starts). Montas' numbers aren't exactly dazzling this spring either, but he's shown to be a leader and mentor for the young staff, and now he's been awarded with the honor of starting on Opening Day. The 30-year-old missed basically all of last season, but in 2022 the righty posted a 4.05 ERA, 3.77 SIERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a K-BB% of 16.3%. While he may be the Reds' "ace" right now, for typical 12-team roto leagues he's not a draftable asset at this point, ranked 391 overall at RotoBaller.

Sat Dec 30 202313:55Frankie Montas Signs With The Reds
Free-agent starting pitcher Frankie Montas has signed a deal with the Cincinnati Reds, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The terms of the deal have not been released yet, but it's likely to be a short-term deal, considering Montas' recent injury history. The 30-year-old hurler went from the Athletics to the Yankees at the 2022 trade deadline but produced a 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP) over 39 2/3 innings with New York in the second half of that season. A shoulder injury, which eventually led to surgery, limited him to just one appearance in 2023 with the Yankees as well. There's no doubt that the shoulder injury limited Montas in the second half of 2022, so his struggles should be taken with a grain of salt. Across eight major-league seasons, he has a 3.90 ERA, 1.294 WHIP, and 612:197 K:BB over 593 2/3 innings. He is an interesting bounce-back candidate from a fantasy perspective in 2024.

Thu Dec 14 202322:33Frankie Montas A Realistic Target For Twins
The Athletic's Aaron Gleeman believes a player like right-handed free-agent Frankie Montas is a realistic free-agent target for the Minnesota Twins this offseason coming off an injury. The Twins also had interest in Montas at the 2022 trade deadline when the New York Yankees acquired him from the Oakland Athletics. Left-hander James Paxton is another perennial reclamation project coming off an injury that the Twins could have interest in. The 30-year-old Montas has been hurt since the trade, making just nine appearances (41 innings) in his time with New York -- he pitched in just one game in 2023. Montas is going to need to prove he's healthy first before fantasy managers invest in him, but Minnesota would be a solid landing spot as he looks to bounce back.

Wed Dec 6 202314:56Frankie Montas Fully Healthy
Free-agent pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) is "fully healthy" and "in great demand," according to his agent Scott Boras. The Yankees are among the clubs who have reached out to the right-hander. A shoulder injury limited the 30-year-old to just one outing and 1 1/3 innings of work in the 2023 season while he walked one and struck out one in that time. The Yankees originally acquired him in a 2022 trade-deadline deal with the Oakland A's, and he made eight starts for the club down the stretch but struggled to a 6.35 ERA in that time. Montas broke out with a 2.63 ERA in the 2019 season and put forth a 3.37 ERA as recently as the 2021 season before shoulder issues limited him the last couple of seasons.

Sat Nov 25 202313:04Yankees Still Interested In Frankie Montas
The New York Yankees remain interested in re-signing right-hander Frankie Montas this offseason. The Yankees are very much in the starting pitching market this winter and are also eyeing Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery, among others. The Yankees acquired Montas from the Oakland Athletics in the second half of the 2022 season, but he made just eight starts for them that year and required arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The 30-year-old then managed to pitch in one game in relief in 2023. New York must think Montas has the potential to return to his 2021 form with better health, when he went 13-9 with a 3.37 ERA and career-high 207 strikeouts in 187 innings (32 starts).

Sat Sep 30 202317:38Frankie Montas Activated On Saturday
New York Yankees pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) has been activated from the 60-day injured list on Saturday. The right-hander has missed the entire season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He'll make his return on Saturday and is expected to work in relief at some point this weekend. The 30-year-old is set to become a free agent after the season. That being said, Montas will get a chance to show both the Yankees and possible other suitors what he has to offer over the final few games of the regular season.

Mon Sep 25 202312:33Frankie Montas Could Return In Final Week
New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) isn't being ruled out for a potential return to the team for the final week of the 2023 season. Montas has been on the 60-day injured list all year after shoulder surgery this spring, but he's been working hard to make an appearance before the season ends. He's made two starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the last week, including two scoreless innings and 25 total pitches on Saturday. It would be a positive step for Montas, but he's also set to become a free agent this winter and is unlikely to return to the Bronx in 2024. His acquisition from the Oakland Athletics last summer at the trade deadline will go down as one of the worst blockbuster deals in general manager Brian Cashman's tenure.

Fri Aug 11 202320:20Frankie Montas Not Expected To Return This Year
New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) remains in a throwing program at the team's minor-league complex in Florida, and it doesn't sound as though he's going to make it back to the big leagues in 2023. Montas hasn't made any significant progress since having arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder way back in February. His setback earlier this summer was likely the final nail in the coffin for him being able to make it back this year. Even if the 30-year-old was able to return, he wouldn't be an option for fantasy lineups in the final month of the regular season. In his six starts for the Yanks last year after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics, he put up a rough 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP), 1.54 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings pitched.

Sun Jul 16 202310:15Frankie Montas Recently Shut Down For A Brief Period
New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) required a brief throwing shutdown recently after experiencing soreness in his right shoulder. The 30-year-old has been shelved all season following right shoulder surgery stemming from inflammation last fall. While playing catch and throwing is certainly a step in the right direction on his long recovery road, Montas is still yet to toss off a mound. With his return unlikely until September, fantasy managers should probably not be expecting much fantasy relevance out of the right-hander in 2023.

Wed Mar 8 202315:24Frankie Montas Expects To Pitch This Year
New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) said that he "for sure" expects to pitch for the team in 2023. He doesn't have a target date set yet, and he will resume playing catch in around nine to 10 weeks after having right shoulder surgery on Feb. 21. Perhaps the 29-year-old right-hander will be able to help the Yankees down the stretch, but there's little chance that he'll do much for fantasy managers in 2023. Montas admitted he wasn't 100 percent healthy after the Yankees acquired him from the Oakland Athletics at last year's trade deadline. In his eight starts for the Yankees in the second half, he had a 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP), 1.54 WHIP, 15 walks and 33 strikeouts in 39 2/3 frames.

Wed Feb 22 202315:18Frankie Montas Undergoes Shoulder Surgery Wednesday
New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) underwent surgery to clean up his right labrum on Wednesday. The good news is that doctors didn't have to touch his rotator cuff, so Montas is expected to begin a throwing program in 12 weeks. The 29-year-old right-hander and the Yankees are hoping that he will be cleared to resume throwing in late May or early June, but there's a good chance that he'll miss all of the first half of the 2023 season. Montas will eventually be placed on the 60-day injured list to kick off the campaign. The Dominican hurler's fantasy value obviously takes a massive hit due to the injury, especially coming off a rough eight-start stretch in the Bronx in 2022 in which he had a 6.35 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 39 2/3 innings.

Wed Feb 15 202314:07Frankie Montas Will Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Could Miss Season
New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) will reportedly undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday, per a tweet from ESPN's Jeff Passan. Per Passan's tweet, New York manager Aaron Boone said the surgery "could cause him to miss the season." Montas made 27 starts last season, throwing 144.1 innings combined between the Oakland Athletics and Yankees. He logged five pitcher wins in those 144.1 innings while pitching to a 4.05 ERA and a 3.78 FIP to go along with 142 strikeouts and 43 walks allowed. As of now, the American League East club's other starting pitching options include Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, Domingo German, and Clarke Schmidt.

Wed Feb 15 202312:25Surgery On The Table For Frankie Montas
New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) continues to be evaluated, and a surgical option is "on the table," according to pitching coach Matt Blake. However, surgery would "not necessarily" be season-ending. The Yankees are doing their due diligence with Montas' shoulder injury with spring training starting for pitchers and catchers this week. The 29-year-old is expected to miss at least the first month of the season, and he'll likely miss most of the year if surgery is needed, although an exact timetable probably wouldn't be known until after he has surgery. The bottom line is that Montas is an extremely risky fantasy pick this year until we know more about whether or not he'll need to go under the knife. The Dominican starter had a 6.35 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in his eight starts for the Yanks in 2022 after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics.

Sat Jan 14 202313:55Frankie Montas To Miss First Month Of Season
New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) is expected to miss the first month of the regular season in 2023 due to shoulder inflammation that he dealt with at the end of 2022, according to sources. Montas is eight to 10 weeks behind in his offseason training. The 29-year-old missed two weeks with the Oakland Athletics last year and then landed on the injured list on Sept. 20 with the Yankees after eight lackluster outings in pinstripes. The Yanks sent left-handers JP Sears and Ken Waldichuk, along with two minor-leaguers, to acquire Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the A's at last year's trade deadline. Montas had a 6.35 ERA in 39 2/3 innings in his eight starts for New York in 2022, but they're hoping he'll be an important part of their rotation in 2023 once he returns from his shoulder issues.

Fri Jan 13 202321:03Frankie Montas Gets $7.5 Million From Yankees
The New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million deal with starting pitcher Frankie Montas to avoid salary arbitration on Friday. The Yankees acquired Montas at the trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics last August to beef up their rotation, but the only made eight starts in pinstripes and dealt with a right shoulder issue. He had an ERA over 6.00 in the Bronx and finished 2022 with a combined 5-12 record, 4.05 ERA (3.78 FIP), 1.25 WHIP and 23.4 percent strikeout rate in 144 1/3 innings over 27 starts. With better health in 2023, the 29-year-old right-hander could bounce back for the Yankees and fantasy managers, but it will admittedly be much tougher pitching in Yankee Stadium and the tough American League East for a full season.

Wed Oct 19 202214:54Frankie Montas Is On Yankees ALCS Roster
New York Yankees pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) is on the team's roster for the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros. The starter made eight starts for the American League East club after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics at the trade deadline. The veteran pitched to a 6.35 ERA and a 4.93 FIP in 39.2 innings for New York down the stretch in the regular season. Overall, Montas logged a 4.05 ERA and a 3.79 FIP in 144.1 total innings this season between Oakland and New York. He'll give the team another rotation option alongside the likes of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jameson Taillon, and Luis Severino.

Fri Oct 14 202214:06Frankie Montas Could Be Available In ALCS
New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) has thrown twice from bullpen mounds and will travel to Tampa to begin throwing live batting practice. The Yankees view him as an opener/relief option if they advance to the American League Championship Series next week. Montas is dealing with right shoulder inflammation and hasn't pitched since late September, so he won't be able to go very deep for the Yankees if he starts any games in the ALCS should the team advance past the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Division Series this weekend. The 29-year-old starter wasn't very good in his eight starts for New York after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics, going 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP), a 1.54 WHIP and a 33:15 K:BB in 39 2/3 frames, but injuries may have been to blame.

Mon Sep 26 202209:49Frankie Montas Hasn't Resumed Throwing
New York Yankees pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) has yet to resume a throwing program. According to manager Aaron Boone, Montas probably won't be built up beyond 40 pitches by the first of the playoffs. The 29-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday due to shoulder inflammation. He hasn't resumed throwing and likely won't return during the regular season. Montas owns a 5-12 record, a 4.05 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a 142:43 K: BB across 144 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues can move on from Montas as he most likely won't return to the Yankees' rotation before the season ends.

Tue Sep 20 202216:22Frankie Montas Goes On Injured List
The New York Yankees placed right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. Montas' MRI exam showed only inflammation in his right shoulder, but he will be shut down from throwing for a couple of days. The issue is similar to the first time it cropped up this year when he was with the Oakland Athletics, and it cost him over two weeks. The 29-year-old received a cortisone shot and is hoping to make one more start before the regular season ends. Fantasy managers shouldn't be holding out hope that that happens. Expect Domingo German to take Montas' spot in the starting rotation the rest of the way. Montas has struggled since being acquired from the A's, going 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP), a 1.54 WHIP, 33 K's and 15 walks in 39 2/3 innings over eight starts in pinstripes.

Tue Sep 20 202211:01Frankie Montas' MRI Exam Brings Good News
New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) received some positive news from his MRI results after it didn't show anything significant, according to sources. Montas could still get some extra rest due to the right shoulder soreness that caused him to get the MRI exam on Sunday following his latest poor outing against the Milwaukee Brewers. In eight starts since being acquired from the Oakland Athletics, Montas has a rough 6.35 ERA, and he allowed four runs in just 3 1/3 innings in his most recent outing against Milwaukee. He also sat out for over two weeks in July while with the A's due to shoulder inflammation, so the Yankees aren't rushing him back out there. Don't be surprised if the Yankees turn to Domingo German to take Montas' next turn in the rotation.
