OF Hector Olivera, arrested during a Braves road trip to Washington in April, was found guilty Thursday of misdemeanor domestic assault and sentenced to 90 days in jail, but 80 days of his sentence were suspended. The 30-year-old native of Cuba was suspended 82 days by MLB and sent to San Diego by the Braves in exchange for OF Matt Kemp. Olivera was released by the Padres without playing a game and is a free agent.

Olivera will play about six weeks in a Winter League over the offseason, Kevin McAlpin of Sports Radio 680 The Fan reports.

Olivera made his big league debut after a midseason trade to the Braves, ending his rookie campaign slashing .253/.310/.405 with two homers in 24 games. With the Braves turning their focus to 2016, it seems likely that Olivera will sit out the second game of the doubleheader as well. While Olivera has been deployed as a platoon player in recent weeks, sitting against most left-handers (even though he bats right), he's fully expected to a lineup regular either at third base or in left field next season. That was the expectation all along, after the Braves gave up the likes of Jose Peraza and Alex Wood in order to land Olivera at the trade deadline. Olivera hasn't exactly excelled since his promotion (.669 OPS), but the Braves expect him to be much improved after winter ball and a full spring training.
