"It's always nice to have a third catcher," manager Bob Melvin said. "We felt like the bullpen was in good enough shape to get another position player here."

McBride, who has mashed at the Triple-A level the last few seasons but has produced much more modestly at the major-league level, will occupy the smaller portion of a timeshare at first base with Ben Paulsen and left field with Kyle Parker.

McBride's .328/.380/549 batting line with 12 home runs and 49 RBI has earned him another shot at the big leagues. He's had a couple other stints with the Rockies as well, but neither turned out well. At the age of 30, McBride will receive another shot, but seems unlikely to receive consistent playing time.

McBride is batting a sizzling .350/.394/.588 with 11 homers and 56 RBI over 282 plate appearances for Triple-A Albuquerque this season.

We've seen this kind of performance before from McBride, who has been a fixture at the Triple-A level in the Rockies organization for the last four seasons. However, because he's 30 years old and doesn't offer much defensive flexibility as a first base/corner outfield type, McBride seems to be the quintessential "Quad-A" player. He doesn't have a spot on the 40-man roster, so it would likely take a couple of injuries before McBride would receive the chance to see reserve action with the big club.

McBride was reassigned to minor league camp Wednesday, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.

Despite logging 34 plate appearances in the majors last season, McBride won't make the final 25-man roster cut. With the Colorado outfield currently healthy, there's little need for the services of the 29-year-old at this time.

McBride will likely be assigned to Triple-A. In 21 games with the Rockies in 2014, McBride hit just .226/.294/.484 with two home runs and six RBI.

McBride parked his second homer of the season on Saturday against the Diamondbacks as he went 1-for-3 while scoring a run and driving in one RBI on the night.

With the Rockies injuries of late, the 29-year old McBride is getting a chance to play. He's had less than 20 at-bats to this point in the season, but should get more opportunities down the line in a lost season for the Rockies.

McBride was the hero Wednesday, hitting his first career grand slam as part of a 2-for-3 effort to beat the Royals.

McBride was starting for Justin Morneau at first base against left-handed Royals starter Danny Duffy. It was McBride's first start of the year after being called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday.

McBride's contract was purchased from Triple-A on Tuesday, and he was activated from the DL, the Denver Post's Nick Groke reports.

He broke his foot while jogging the bases during a home run trot at Triple-A Colorado Springs in April, but he's now fully recovered and will offer depth at first base and in the outfield at the big league level. He slashed .305/.345/.487 with seven home runs in 51 games this year at Triple-A and could offer power to daily leaguers when he gets in the lineup.

He was an offensive juggernaut compared to the rest of his teammates, as the Rockies scratched out just two singles in the ballgame. The 28-year-old is hitting .333 on the spring (8-for-24) as he attempts to latch on as a utility player. Should he make the team, his potential eligibility at catcher makes him an interesting late-round gamble in deep mixed leagues.
