The Golden State Warriors are considering making a run to sign center Anderson Varejao, who is scheduled to clear waivers Sunday after his trade from Cleveland to Portland.Sources told ESPN.com that the Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks are currently investigating the prospect of signing Varejao. The Warriors would have to open a spot on their 15-man roster to sign Varejao. The defending champions have a need inside given the recent loss for at least six weeks of key backup Festus Ezeli to knee surgery."I have not been notified of that but it makes perfect sense, right?" Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said Friday night of the possibility of signing Varejao. "I don't even know, am I allowed to even mention his name? I can get fined by the NBA. I don't even know what the rule is."Discussing Varejao would not be considered tampering since he currently is not on a team after the Trail Blazers placed him on waivers. The Cavaliers acquired forward Channing Frye from the Orlando Magic and sent Varejao to the Trail Blazers as part of a three-team trade at Thursday's trade deadline. After the deal was completed, the Blazers put Varejao on waivers. He is owed $9.7 million this year, $9.3 million in 2016-17 and $4.5 million from his partially guaranteed deal in 2017-18. Varejao has a 5 percent trade kicker that will be worth an extra $626,825. The Cavaliers saved more than $10 million in payroll and taxes this season by trading Varejao.Sources told ESPN that Varejao plans to take the weekend before seriously thinking about his next destination. The 6-foot-11, 273-pound Varejao has played only for the Cavaliers in his 12 NBA seasons, prompting the veteran to issue a thank you letter to Cleveland fans Friday."For the last 12 years, I have had the honor of representing the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers organization, and for that I will forever be grateful," Varejao wrote on Facebook. "No matter the product on the court one thing never changed ... The unwavering support from all of you, the fans."Whether you were watching on TV, listening on the radio, or in the Q screaming at the top of your lungs, we felt your energy and support. Cleveland fans are simply the best. Home is where the heart is, and my heart will forever be in Cleveland."Varejao appeared in 31 games this season for the Cavaliers. The 33-year-old native of Brazil has averaged 7.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in 591 games for Cleveland since joining the league in 2004-05.
