Sat Mar 3000:59Aaron Civale Cruises To Win Friday
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Aaron Civale turned in a successful 2024 debut in Friday's 8-2 victory over the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays, hurling six one-run innings on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. George Springer blasted a home run during the third frame, but Civale mostly cruised to the win in his opening showing of the year. Acquired by the Rays in a trade deadline deal last season, the 28-year-old right-hander struggled to the tune of a 5.36 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 45 1/3 innings in Tampa during 2023 but got off on the right foot on Friday. With a whopping five members of the pitching staff unavailable for the Rays across various intervals of the campaign, Civale is going to be a big part of their rotation this year. He's slated to face the defending-champion Texas Rangers on Wednesday, where Civale will be a dicey fantasy option.

Sat Mar 2318:49Aaron Civale Picks Up First Spring Win On Saturday
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Aaron Civale (1-1) allowed one run on three hits while striking out six over six innings in Saturday's 5-2 spring victory over the Atlanta Braves. He picked up his first spring win of the season. It was the 28-year-old's best spring training start, lowering his ERA to 5.25 and 1.08 WHIP over 12 innings. Civale was limited to 122 innings in 2023 due to an oblique strain. He was traded to the Rays for Kyle Manzardo during last year's deadline. Civale posted a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 116:33 K: BB over 122 1/3 innings between the Guardians and Rays in 2023. ATC projects similar numbers for Civale in 2024, with the right-hander to go (9-8) with a 4.05 ERA and 133 K across 144 innings. With an ADP of 240.7, Civale is likely only to be a depth option in most league formats heading into 2024 drafts.

Fri Jan 1214:41Rays, Aaron Civale Settle At One-Year, $4.9 Million
The Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Aaron Civale have settled on a one-year, $4.9 million pact for the 2024 season, avoiding arbitration in the process. The right-hander was acquired by the Rays mid-season from the Cleveland Guardians and posted a healthy 3.46 ERA in 23 starts between the two clubs, although he limped to a 5.36 ERA across 10 starts after being acquired by Tampa Bay. The veteran's bread-and-butter lies within his control as he sports a 6.1% BB% for his career in which he has posted a 3.92 ERA across 86 appearances, all of which have been starts. Capped by a career 22% K%, Civale's fantasy value is middling, especially with his 23 starts in 2023 representing a career-high.

Fri Aug 11 202308:50Aaron Civale Ready To Start Friday
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Aaron Civale is set to start Friday's game against Xzavion Curry and the Cleveland Guardians. It will be the right-hander's second start with the Rays after he was moved at the trade deadline. Over 81 1/3 innings this season, Civale owns a 2.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 18.9% strikeout rate with five victories. The 28-year-old is a fine option in deeper formats and should be able to handle his former team, as they've posted a combined .689 OPS.

Mon Jul 31 202316:48Rays Acquire Aaron Civale From Guardians
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Cleveland Guardians on Monday in exchange for first base prospect Kyle Manzardo. The Rays are bolstering their starting rotation as they attempt to get back atop the American League East division and make another deep playoff run in 2023. They had to give up one of their top overall prospects in order to do so, though. Civale represents a significant pickup, especially since he's under club control through the 2025 season. The 28-year-old has been a must-start in fantasy since returning from an injured-list stint earlier this year, posting a 2.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 20 walks and 50 strikeouts in 11 starts (64 1/3 innings) since June 2. Civale has plenty of swing-and-miss stuff, but he could be headed for some regression to finish the year, especially with the move to the much-tougher AL East.

Mon Jul 31 202312:11Guardians Considering Dealing Aaron Civale
The Cleveland Guardians have kicked around the idea of trading right-hander Aaron Civale at this year's trade deadline, according to multiple industry sources. Civale's stock has never been higher, as he's sporting a 2.34 ERA on the year and a 1.45 ERA in his six July starts in which he's held the opposition to a .176/.229/.229 slash line. He also has two and a half years of team control. On the flip side, the Guardians are in desperate need of starting pitching with Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie and Cal Quantrill all currently out with injuries. Civale tossed six scoreless innings on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox and is looking extremely intriguing at the trade deadline for contending teams. He has allowed two runs or fewer in six straight starts since July 2.

Tue May 30 202317:59Aaron Civale To Return On Friday
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale (oblique) will make his return to the mound for Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The right-hander has been sidelined since early April due to a left oblique strain. He posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with eight strikeouts during his two starts before landing on the injured list. He looked good during his recent minor league rehab appearances. Civale should give a boost to the Guardians rotation, but his fantasy value isn't too great due to his lack of strikeouts. He'll be worth looking at in deeper leagues.

Fri May 19 202309:49Aaron Civale Goes Three Innings In His First Rehab Start
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale (oblique) began his rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Columbus and pitched three innings. The righty gave up a pair of hits with no walks and four strikeouts in a successful appearance. It's unclear how many games Civale needs before returning to the Majors, but there's a chance he returns before the calendar flips to June. Before going down with a left oblique strain following his April 7 start, the 27-year-old posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with eight punchouts over 12.2 innings. Civale isn't the most exciting arm, but he can offer decent value in every category as a deeper league option.

Mon May 8 202309:22Aaron Civale Ready For A Live Bullpen
Cleveland Guardians righty Aaron Civale (oblique) will go to the team's Spring Training facility on Monday before throwing a live bullpen on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. If the bullpen goes well, president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti told reporters that they'll clear the 27-year-old for a simulated game. Fantasy managers should assume Civale will need a couple of rehab starts before returning to the Guardians, so he likely won't be back until early June. He hit the injured list with a left oblique strain in early April, but before the ailment, the former third-rounder was 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA, 16% strikeout rate, and 1.04 WHIP over two starts and 12.2 innings. Civale can be dropped if there's limited injured list room, especially in shallow formats.

Mon Apr 10 202315:32Aaron Civale Placed On The 15-Day Injured List
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain. This comes as a bit of a surprise as Civale started against the Mariners just three days ago and didn't appear to injure himself, although he didn't pitch very well. The team hasn't provided an update on Civale's injury yet but oblique issues can be tricky so fantasy managers should expect a multi-week absence, at the minimum. Peyton Battenfield has been recalled and will take his place in the starting rotation. Civale has registered a 2.84 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 8:2 K/BB ratio across 12 2/3 innings (two starts) so far this year.

Tue Oct 18 202200:09Terry Francona Says Aaron Civale Will Start Tuesday
Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona said Monday afternoon that starting pitcher Aaron Civale would start against the Yankees in the American League Division Series Game 5 even if it were pushed back a day, per the Athletic's Zack Meisel. This will be the case, as Monday's scheduled game was postponed due to rain. The 27-year-old put together a lackluster 4.92 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 20 starts this season and would be opposed by Nestor Cortes if he were to pitch Tuesday. The postponement does open the potential for the Guardians to start Shane Bieber, who had a stellar 2.88 ERA through 31 regular-season starts and has a 2.03 ERA through two 2022 post-season starts. It remains to be seen if Francona will stick to his word, but it does look like Bieber would give the Guardians the best shot of advancing to the American League Championship Series.

Sun Oct 16 202218:44Aaron Civale To Start Game 5 If Needed
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale has been named the Game 5 starter for the team. The Guardians will play Game 4 versus the New York Yankees on Sunday. They will obviously look to put away the Yankees here, but Civale is set to pitch in Game 5, assuming it gets that far. The 27-year-old has been better lately, but is posting a 4.92 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 98/22 K/BB ratio this season. It's worth noting that Game 5 would be on the road where Civale has a 5.88 ERA this season. The Guardians are hopeful to win on Sunday, so Civale might not be needed.

Fri Sep 16 202221:37Aaron Civale To Be Activated For Tuesday Start
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Aaron Civale (forearm) will be activated from the injured list to make a start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Civale landed on the injured list with inflammation in his right forearm. The veteran hurler has mostly struggled in 2022, although he had started to pitch better before getting sidelined by the injury. Overall, Civale has a 2-6 record, 5.40 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts over 75 innings of work.

Fri Sep 16 202216:17Aaron Civale To Return Tuesday
The plan is for Cleveland Guardians right-hander Aaron Civale (forearm) to return to the starting rotation and pitch against the Chicago White Sox next Tuesday, according to manager Terry Francona. Civale surrendered four earned runs and allowed two home runs in 2 2/3 innings in his minor league rehab start on Thursday, but the Guardians feel he's ready to return to their rotation next week. The 27-year-old hasn't pitched well in the big leagues this year either, going 2-6 with a 5.40 ERA (3.92 FIP), a 1.31 WHIP, 75 strikeouts and 20 walks in 75 innings over his 16 starts. Civale won't particularly be an attractive streaming option for fantasy managers in his first start back, though he could be a two-start pitcher next week.

Fri Sep 2 202216:01Zach Plesac, Aaron Civale Placed On Injured List
The Cleveland Guardians placed starting pitchers Zach Plesac (hand) and Aaron Civale (forearm) on the injured list on Friday and added Xzavion Curry and Kirk McCarty to the active roster in corresponding moves. Plesac was scratched from his start on Friday against the Seattle Mariners with a right hand fracture, while Civale is dealing with right forearm inflammation. Pitching prospect Cody Morris will make his major league debut on Friday against Seattle and will be a risky streamer for fantasy managers. There's a chance that both Plesac and Civale won't pitch for the Guardians again in 2022. Plesac has gone 3-11 with a 4.39 ERA (4.50 FIP), 1.31 WHIP and 99 K's in 127 innings (23 starts). Civale has a 5.40 ERA (3.94 FIP), 1.31 WHIP and 75 strikeouts in 75 innings (16 starts).

Fri Jul 29 202221:58Aaron Civale To Throw Off Mound Sunday
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Aaron Civale (wrist) is scheduled to throw off of a mound on Sunday. Civale has been sidelined since July 13 after he sprained his right wrist but he has reportedly responded well to an anti-inflammatory injection. The 27-year-old could be ramping up for a rehab assignment assuming his mound work on Sunday goes smoothly. He has struggled in 2022, posting a 2-5 record, 6.17 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 52 strikeouts over 54 innings of work.

Wed Jul 13 202220:09Aaron Civale Departs Early With Wrist Soreness
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale (wrist) left his start early on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox due to right wrist soreness. Civale only made it through one scoreless inning, allowing two hits while walking none and striking out one batter. It's unknown if this injury will keep the 27-year-old right-hander from taking his first turn in the rotation to begin the second half of the season, but we'll update you when we have more information. Civale hasn't been of much use in fantasy in 2022, as he entered Wednesday's start with a 2-5 record, 6.28 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 51 strikeouts and 15 walks in 53 innings pitched over his 11 starts.

Sat Jul 9 202213:24Aaron Civale Goes Seven Strong
Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Aaron Civale through seven strong innings Friday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks to the Kansas City Royals. He struck out six batters and was left with a no-decision in the contest. This is perhaps Civale's best start of the season in what has been a difficult campaign for the 27-year-old. Civale has recorded a career-worst 6.28 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 11 starts and 53 innings. Fantasy managers can keep an eye on Civale, but he's no more than a desperation fill-in in strong matchups at this point.

Fri Jul 1 202221:52Aaron Civale Likely To Start Saturday After Friday Postponement
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Aaron Civale had his Friday start against the New York Yankees postponed due to inclement weather. The Guardians and Yankees will now play a doubleheader in Cleveland on Saturday. Cleveland has yet to officially announce their pitching plans for Saturday, but expect that Civale will start one of the two games. Civale has struggled through an up-and-down season and will not be a recommended fantasy option in a tough matchup against the Yankees offense.

Tue Jun 21 202216:33Aaron Civale Activated Ahead Of Tuesday's Start
The Cleveland Guardians have activated starting pitcher Aaron Civale (glute) from the injured list. He will be the team's starting pitcher for Tuesday night's game against the Minnesota Twins. Civale had been on the shelf since May 20 due to a left glute injury. The 27-year-old has yet to find his groove on the mound this year. Over seven starts, he's gone 2-3 with a 7.84 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. He's been victimized by a 10.9% barrel rate (13th percentile) and a 90.1 mph average exit velocity (22nd percentile) so far this year.
