Fri Oct 1215:49Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees star shortstop Didi Gregorius needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow after injuring himself making a throw in Boston during the AL Division Series, and there's no telling exactly when he'll be able to play again.General manager Brian Cashman said Friday that Gregorius will be out "until sometime next summer." Cashman said the team will have a better idea about his return after surgery, which hasn't yet been scheduled. The surprise announcement at Yankee Stadium led to immediate speculation the team might eventually make a big move to fill the void — pursuit of All-Star infielder and free agent-to-be Manny Machado, now in the NL playoffs with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the meantime, second baseman Gleyber Torres is the Yankees' top internal solution at shortstop, Cashman said."The best option is Didi," Cashman said. "We'll wait on him."The 28-year-old Gregorius is the anchor of the Yankees' infield, popular with his teammates and a fan favorite.Gregorius ... [More]

Wed Oct 1018:31Yankees in danger of decade without World Series
NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees are in danger of going an entire decade without reaching a World Series for the first time since the 1910s.Aaron Boone's rookie season as a manager ended in failure when New York fizzled in the AL Division Series against Boston and was eliminated in four games."You're always chasing utopia," Boone said after the Yankees' final rally of the season fell short Tuesday night.A year after losing in the AL Championship Series was perceived as success, elimination by Boston left a feeling of failure for the title-worshipping Yankees.New York went 100-62 for its best record since its last World Series championship in 2009, yet finished eight games back of the Red Sox. The Yankees have gone six straight seasons without a first-place finish. They're set to retool around the young core of Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar and Luis Severino, plus in-prime regulars Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks. The Yankees got the power but w... [More]
Wed Oct 1003:20Out at home: Yankees eliminated by rival Red Sox in ALDS
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees couldn't wait to get back home. Now, that's exactly where they're staying.CC Sabathia became the latest pitcher to put New York in an early hole as rookie manager Aaron Boone again stuck with his starter too long, and the Yankees fell just short of extending their season Tuesday night with a 4-3 loss to the rival Boston Red Sox in Game 4 of their AL Division Series."That's the one team that you don't want to lose to," outfielder Brett Gardner said. "We hate losing to them and we love beating them. Obviously, they just had our number this year."New York mounted a last-ditch rally against wild closer Craig Kimbrel, scoring twice in the ninth inning . But the Yankees' comeback stalled when Gary Sanchez's bases-loaded sacrifice fly was caught on the left-field warning track , and rookie Gleyber Torres grounded out with two on to end it — sort of.The play at first base was close, so both teams and a sellout crowd held their breath duri... NEW YORK (AP) — Angel Hernandez hit .250 in Game 3 of the AL Division Series. Sat Sep 2918:09Heads Up! Strong-armed fan hits Yanks' Stanton with HR ball
BOSTON (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton has been plunked plenty of times. But by his own home run ball? The New York Yankees star homered over the Green Monster during Saturday's 8-5 win, connecting in the seventh inning against the Boston Red Sox. Stanton then got quite a surprise from a strong-armed fan while rounding second base at Fenway Park.A man wearing a black T-shirt heaved the souvenir from his first-row seat on top of the left-field wall, and the ball took a hop and bounced off Stanton."I wouldn't have thought it got to me that fast with a fan throwing it," Stanton said. "I've never seen it happen before, so that wasn't my first thought."The slugger continued his home run trot, but turned his head, smiled and appeared to tip his cap to the fan."He got it that far, got his target, he got in trouble for it," Stanton said. "I think it's fine on both sides."The game was briefly halted as umpires gathered near the third-base line to point out the fan to stadium security officials."You s... [More]
