Thu Jul 25 201901:40Rays beat Red Sox 3-2 as Boston files protest over lineup
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Charlie Morton struck out 11 over seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep by beating David Price and Boston 3-2 in a game that the Red Sox protested on Wednesday.Confusion reigned in the top of the eighth when a series of defensive changes involving reliever Adam Kolarek prompted Boston manager Alex Cora to protest the game due to the placement of subs into the Rays lineup after the designated hitter was removed.Kolarek replaced Morton and retired pinch-hitter Sam Travis on a pop fly. The left-hander then shifted to first base when Rays manager Kevin Cash brought in reliever Chaz Roe, who got a fly ball from Mookie Betts. After Kolarek then returned to the mound and Nate Lowe entered to play first base, Cora met with the umpires, which prompted around a 15-minute stoppage as the umpires discussed the matter. After the protest was made and the game resumed, Kolarek got a first-pitch grounder from Rafael Devers. An unhappy Cora again talked... Sun Jul 21 201922:40Phils win in Pittsburgh on Hoskins' HR; fan walks to plate
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A fan casually walked to home plate and approached Philadelphia hitter Brad Miller for a handshake before being apprehended, and the Phillies later beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Sunday on Rhys Hoskins' home run in the 11th inning.Moments after Bryce Harper argued a called third strike and Hoskins spiked his bat after being hit by a pitch, things turned bizarre in the sixth inning at PNC Park. That's when a man carrying a cellphone came out of the crowd and strolled toward Miller in the batter's box. Miller backed away and the man kept walking, leisurely getting near the Phillies' dugout on the first base side, where he was handcuffed by security personnel and led away.Miller then grounded into an inning-ending double play.Hoskins hit his 21st home run, connecting off Chris Stratton (1-3). The drive came right after Harper again seemed displeased with plate umpire Ben May when striking out looking to start the inning.Phillies reliever Ranger Suárez (3-0) got Starling Marte... [More]

Fri Jul 19 201901:19Boone dubs Yanks 'savages' during rant in 6-2 win over Rays
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees manager Aaron Boone got fired up at a rookie umpire in a profane rant, and New York awoke from a sleepy start to rally past the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 in a doubleheader opener Thursday.New York rallied to win the second game 5-1 and reopen an eight-game AL East lead over the second-place Rays. Luke Voit tied the score in the fifth with his first home run since June 14, and catcher Mike Zunino caused Charlie Morton to balk home the tiebreaking run in a four-run sixth that included Didi Gregorius' two-run single. The Yankees won three straight after wasting a ninth-inning lead in the series opener and improved to 34-11 against the AL East, including 12-5 against Tampa Bay.After Domingo Germán (12-2) gave up solo homers to his first two batters in the first game, Gio Urshela hit a tying home run in the second off Yonny Chirinos (9-5), and Gary Sánchez smashed a go-ahead 110 mph single off the glove of third baseman Yandy Díaz during a three-run fifth. Díaz had helped the... [More]

Diamondbacks executive Tony La Russa said Sunday that Lopez's issues with elbow tightness aren't considered serious, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. "More precautionary than anything else," La Russa said, regarding Lopez's injury.
Lopez has been out since Aug. 9 with the injury and is currently listed on the 7-day DL at Double-A Mobile. The 22-year-old has appeared in 10 games and covered 48 innings at Mobile this season, going 1-6 with a 4.69 ERA and 34 strikeouts. There's a chance he could return to the mound for Mobile later in September, but the Diamondbacks may be of mind to shut him down the rest of the way.

Lopez is on the Double-A Mobile disabled list with right elbow tightness, the Arizona Republic reports.
The Cuba defector has had a disappointing season with a 4.69 ERA and 32:24 K:BB ratio in 48 innings at Double-A. If this injury is serious it would likely end his minor league season.
Tue Jul 28 201510:07Lopez expected to resume pitching at Double-A Mobile on Thursday
Lopez is expected to resume pitching at Double-A Mobile on Thursday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Lopez has missed the last several weeks of action due to what the Diamondbacks have labeled as "personal reasons." He was back on the field at the team's spring training facility to toss a simulated game, so it appears he's ready to get his development back on track. The Cuban import has a 3.34 ERA and 24:15 K:BB ratio over 35 innings at Mobile this season.

Lopez, 22, has a 3.34 ERA and 24:15 K:BB ratio through 35 innings for Double-A Mobile.
Lopez spent about a month on the Disabled List due to a blood blister, and was racked in his first start back at this level on June 28. Still, he has pitched in only eight games in the minors thus far, so there still could be a learning curve for the Cuban emigre.
Wed Jun 10 201519:05Lopez on minor league disabled list with blood blister
Lopez is on the minor league disabled list with a blood blister, but should be ready to go again soon, the Arizona Republic's Zach Buchanan reports.
Lopez has not pitched since May 19 due to the blister, but the Diamondbacks would understandably not want to rush him back. He was consistently sitting in the low 90s with his fastball and was incorporating a complete four-pitch mix with Double-A Mobile prior to the setback. The 6-foot-3 Cuban righty has a 2.30 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 31.1 innings so far after the aggressive first full-season assignment to Double-A, more than confirming Arizona's faith in his abilities.

Lopez, 22, has a 2.95 ERA and 18:4 K:BB ratio through 18.1 innings for Double-A Mobile.
Lopez has been stellar during his first three starts as a professional despite an 0-2 record. Opposing batters are hitting only .235 against him, though he has yielded three home runs over that span. If he can keep the ball down, Lopez could have an extremely bright future ahead of him.
