Pirates released C Wyatt Toregas.

Toregas was inked to a minor league deal in November after not playing in 2012, but the Pirates have decided to cut him loose. He'll now try to latch on elsewhere.

Toregas was out of baseball last season, but appeared in four games with the Pirates in 2011. He'll serve as an emergency catcher at Triple-A Indianapolis.

He'll share playing time with Dusty Brown while Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit are sidelined with injuries. Toregas hasn't appeared in the big leagues since the 2009 season, when he batted .176 over 51 at-bats with the Indians. The 28-year-old backstop can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

The Tribe designated Toregas for assignment last weekend when they decided that Mike Redmond would be a more suitable backup to starter Lou Marson. Toregas cleared waivers Thursday along with Anderson Hernandez.
