Sat Apr 21 201801:09Ross loses bid for Padres' first no-no in 8th vs. DBacks
PHOENIX (AP) — Tyson Ross lost his bid to pitch the first no-hitter in the history of the San Diego Padres when rookie center fielder Franchy Cordero appeared to misplay a ball with two outs in the eighth inning Friday night of a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Playing their 7,835th game since joining the majors in 1969, the Padres again came agonizingly close to their first no-no. They remain the only team in the big leagues that has never thrown a no-hitter.Ross had a 1-0 lead with two outs in the eighth when Christian Walker lined a drive to deep center. Cordero seemed to get a late break on the ball, then had it sail just over his outstretched glove for a double that made it 1-all. Ross was pulled after throwing a career-high 127 pitches. The right-hander, who turns 31 on Sunday, struck out 10 and walked three. He retired 18 straight after walking Jarrod Dyson in the first. Brad Hand (1-2) relieved Ross and got the last four outs — they combined on the 29th one-hitter in Padres'... [More]

Thu Apr 19 201817:48Reds fire manager Bryan Price after 3-15 start
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds' worst start since the Great Depression prompted a quick hook for Bryan Price.Cincinnati fired its fifth-year manager on Thursday because of a 3-15 start, the first managerial change in the major leagues this season. The Reds hadn't changed managers so early in a season since Tony Perez was fired after 44 games in 1993.It's the first time since 2002 that a manager has been fired in April, according to ESPN. Four managers were fired that April, including Phil Garner after an 0-6 start with the Tigers that matched the quickest hook in major league history.Price managed a rebuilding effort that relied on rookies more than any other team in the majors during his tenure. The Reds have lost at least 94 games in each of the last three seasons while finishing last in the NL Central.Although the Reds have been patient with their coaching staff during the rebuild, their worst start since 1931 prompted the change."We felt we had to act now, we couldn't afford to wait," general... Tue Apr 3 201820:37Storms prompt cancellation of Cubs-Reds game
CINCINNATI (AP) — Cubs manager Joe Maddon knew early Tuesday afternoon that the weather forecast was foreboding. He didn't mind at all. What better way to rest his overworked bullpen?Storms prompted Cincinnati to postpone its game scheduled for Tuesday night, the second time the Reds called off a game because of bad weather during their opening homestand. Following a wait of 1 hour and 24 minutes, the Reds announced it would be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, May 19.So now the 2-3 Cubs get back-to-back days off to rest their bullpen before starting a series in Milwaukee, followed by their 2018 debut at Wrigley Field."It's kind of crazy," Maddon said of the unpredictable weather. "I guess it might be snowing back in Chicago?"Nobody appreciated the day off more than the Cubs' relievers. Chicago played games of 17 innings and 10 innings while splitting a four-game series to open the season in Miami. The bullpen has thrown 26 innings in five games, a rough way to start... [More]
Thu Mar 29 201816:46Reds play catch between raindrops, await opener vs Nationals
CINCINNATI (AP) — Closer Raisel Iglesias skirted the tarp-covered infield along with the rest of the Cincinnati Reds pitchers, heading for the outfield and a quick game of catch before the rains returned. That's as good at it would get on this opening day in Cincinnati. The Reds and Nationals dodged raindrops at Great American Ball Park on Thursday instead of facing off to open the season. Their first game was pushed back to Friday because of the weather. While most other major league teams got after it, they wound up watching."Disappointed," Reds leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton said. "It's not opening day."The Reds had to call off an opener because of weather for the first time since 1966. It's already an unusual start to the season in the place where professional baseball began in 1869. The traditional opening day parade was pushed back to Monday because the sponsors are busy with their Easter weekend business. So the celebration of baseball's return will last a weekend instead of only one... Chris Sale and his fellow aces are having all sorts of trouble with these tuneup starts.Sale was knocked off the mound by a line drive Saturday and exited with a bruised left hip. He said the injury wasn't serious and wouldn't jeopardize his opening day start Thursday for the AL East champion Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay."I don't see anything lingering from this," Sale said. Fri Mar 23 201819:09Homer Bailey will start Reds' season opener vs Nationals
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Homer Bailey wasn't even thinking about opening day. After years of setbacks with his elbow, the Cincinnati Reds' highest-paid starter just wanted to get through spring training without an issue.Bailey accomplished his goal, and manager Bryan Price announced that the right-hander will make his first opening day start at home next Thursday against the Washington Nationals. He's getting the chance in part because Anthony DeSclafani is sidelined with another injury."Cool," Bailey said after pitching six innings against Colorado on Friday. "It is something I never really thought about. When you climb Mount Everest, no one ever talks about the first step. They talk about getting to the top. It is more throughout the course of the season that I look forward to than just the first one."The 31-year-old has been limited to 26 starts over the past three seasons because of injuries to his forearm and elbow. Thu Mar 22 201811:40Reds rotation in focus as they try to end 90-loss streak
CINCINNATI (AP) — The disappointment showed in manager Bryan Price's expression and his words. The Cincinnati Reds had just lost their top starter during spring training for the third year in a row, and that was only the half of it.Not only was Anthony DeSclafani headed to the disabled list with another oblique injury, left-hander Brandon Finnegan had to stop throwing because of a sore forearm. The Reds have lost 90 games and finished last in the NL Central each of the last three seasons as their rebuilding plods along, their worst such streak since the 1930s. The biggest problem is the rotation, which has been gutted by injuries the last two years. This season is starting ominously."I say that with nothing but frustration for Anthony and our club," Price said while revealing DeSclafani's injury. The injuries to DeSclafani and Finnegan left the Reds with one healthy veteran starter as the got ready to open the season — Homer Bailey, who missed time each of the last four seasons because of... Mon Mar 12 201801:23Jake Arrieta gets a deal he likes, ace set to join Phillies
Jake Arrieta finally found a deal he liked. The free agent ace and the Philadelphia Phillies have reached agreement on a three-year contract, two people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because the deal, reportedly worth $75 million, is pending a physical. Arrieta is joining the Phillies just 2 ½ weeks before opening day.The 32-year-old Arrieta was among several top free agents who didn't get a contract for six or seven seasons in a changing market. The Phillies, who have plenty of money to spend, waited until the price was right for them.Arrieta won the 2015 NL Cy Young Award with the Chicago Cubs and helped them win the World Series the next season. The right-hander was 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA last year. The Phillies went 66-96 and finished last in the NL East, and haven't had a winning season since 2011.
