Smith was claimed off waivers by the Marlins on Friday.

He had a 9.72 ERA in 8.1 innings at Triple-A with the Angels but had a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 innings at Triple-A as part of Oakland's organization earlier in the year. Smith will offer organizational bullpen depth for the Marlins, but does not figure to be deployed in high-leverage spots if he gets called up to the big leagues.

The right-hander did allow just three runs in 11.2 innings with Triple-A Nashville to begin the year, though that was with a lackluster 7:5 K:BB and .277 BAA. He will provide depth in the minors for the time being.

Smith gave up five runs in 1.1 innings for the A's, and he received a swift demotion. He will now go through the waiver process, potentially ending up at Triple-A Nashville if he goes unclaimed. Fernando Rodriguez was called up to take his place in the A's bullpen.

Smith owns a 2.31 ERA over eight appearances for the sounds this season, but is only 2-for-4 in save opportunities for the sounds. He'll provide depth in the bullpen for the Athletics, who demoted the struggling Ryan Cook in a corresponding move.

He may be hard-pressed to earn a spot in the A's bullpen to start the year, but Smith figures to be one of the top options to come up when the club needs a fresh arm.
