Fri Feb 14 201414:26Jake Westbrook announces his retirement
Jake Westbrook has announced his retirement from baseball.
Westbrook, 36, made the decision after failing to draw much interest over the winter. "The interest that I was getting wasn't significant enough for me to go through the grind of another year and be away from my family," Westbrook said. "I was kind of 50-50 on whether I wanted to play anyway. I'm good with the decision." The sinkerballer finishes his career with a 105-103 record and 4.32 ERA across parts of 13 seasons. He'll now be able to spend more time with his wife and four children.

Tue Dec 31 201318:06Indians not interested in Jake Westbrook
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians have "no interest" in Jake Westbrook.
Hoynes reported in October that the Tribe could be interested in a reunion with the right-hander, but apparently that ship has sailed. Westbrook has generated zero buzz on the market this winter after the Cardinals declined his $9.5 million option for 2014. The sinkerballer posted a 4.63 ERA and ugly 44/50 K/BB ratio over 116 2/3 innings this season but still seems likely to crack someone's Opening Day rotation in 2014.

Thu Oct 31 201316:17Cards decline Westbrook's option for 2014
Cardinals declined RHP Jake Westbrook's $9.5 million mutual option for 2014.
Westbrook will receive a $1 million buyout and hit free agency. It was an easy call for the Cardinals after the veteran right-hander posted a 4.63 ERA and 44/50 K/BB ratio over 116 2/3 innings this season while dealing with multiple injuries. The 36-year-old indicated in September that he was thinking about retirement.

Sun Oct 27 201316:14Indians may have interest in Jake Westbrook
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes that the Indians could be interested in a reunion with Jake Westbrook.
Westbrook, who spent nine years from 2001-2010 with the Indians, hasn't yet decided whether he'll retire or attempt to pitch again in 2014. He's coming off a disappointing season in which he registered a 4.63 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 44/50 K/BB ratio over 116 2/3 innings. The Cardinals are expected to decline their $9.5 million mutual option on the 36-year-old right-hander.

Mon Sep 30 201322:41Jake Westbrook unsure about 2014
Jake Westbrook indicated Sunday that he was unsure if he'll return in 2014 or retire.
"Whatever happens, who knows?" he said. Westbrook said earlier this season that he planned to continue his career, but the 36-year-old's struggles with performance and health apparently have him re-thinking things. He and the Cardinals have a $9.5 million mutual option for 2014, but the Cards will decline it.

Sat Sep 28 201314:46Westbrook will start for Cardinals on Sunday
Jake Westbrook will start for the Cardinals in Sunday's regular season finale against the Cubs.
It's a nice gesture by the Cardinals to recognize the contributions that the veteran right-hander has made to the team over the years. Sunday's previously scheduled starter, Joe Kelly, will work in relief after Westbrook.

Fri Sep 6 201312:54Jake Westbrook activated from disabled list
Cardinals activated RHP Jake Westbrook from the 15-day disabled list.
Westbrook missed the minimum 15 days with a lower back strain. He's expected to be used in a long relief role for now, but it's possible he could be an option to replace the struggling Lance Lynn.

Sat Aug 31 201308:38Westbrook (back) throws bullpen session
Jake Westbrook (back) threw a bullpen session Friday.
Westbrook hasn't had any issues with his lower back strain and hopes to be activated when first eligible. He'll likely be used in long relief when he returns.

Fri Aug 23 201312:05Cards put Westbrook on DL, recall Martinez
Cardinals placed RHP Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 22, with a lower back strain.
It's probably a phantom injury, as Westbrook was poised to lose his rotation spot, anyway. He'll likely be used in long relief when he returns next month. Carlos Martinez has been recalled to take Westbrook's roster spot and will also likely assume his spot in the rotation.

Fri Aug 23 201311:48Jake Westbrook (back) expected to go on DL
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said during an interview on CBS Sports 920 in St. Louis Friday that he expects Jake Westbrook (back) to go on the disabled list.
It's debatable whether or not Westbrook is really injured, but either way the Cards are going to need a starter on Monday. Mozeliak said that Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Tyler Lyons are all options but a decision had not yet been made. It's worth noting that Wacha appeared in relief Thursday, so he'd be going on three days' rest Monday. Martinez is currently scheduled to start Friday at Triple-A Memphis, so if he ends up getting scratched he will likely be the choice to take Westbrook's spot.

Thu Aug 22 201317:55Westbrook dealing with back stiffness
Jake Westbrook is currently dealing with back stiffness.
That's the reason why he didn't take batting practice with the other starting pitchers Thursday. However, it's unclear whether it will prevent him from making his next start. Injury or not, he doesn't deserve a rotation spot at the moment.

Thu Aug 22 201317:42Westbrook not removed from rotation yet
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny isn't ready to say whether Jake Westbrook will start against the Reds next week.
Westbrook allowed five runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings against the Brewers on Wednesday and owns an ugly 9.69 ERA and 11/16 K/BB ratio over his last 26 innings of work. With the Cardinals jockeying for position in the NL Central, it's time for them to consider other options. For what it's worth, Westbrook didn't hit with the other starters on Thursday and merely watched, so one could take this as a hint about their future plans.

Wed Aug 21 201318:06Jake Westbrook gives up five runs in Brewers
Jake Westbrook was pulled after allowing five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Brewers.
Westbrook was given a big early lead -- seven runs in the first two innings -- but he was on the verge of letting it slip away when he was replaced by Kevin Siegrist in the fifth. Siegrist was able to get out of the jam, protecting the 7-5 lead and Westbrook's ERA. This really needs to be the end of Westbrook's time in the rotation, at least for a little while. Maybe Carlos Martinez will come up and replace him next week.

Sun Aug 18 201310:54Matheny: Westbrook will remain in rotation
Jake Westbrook will remain in the Cardinals' rotation and make his scheduled start on Wednesday in Milwaukee, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.
Westbrook has allowed 24 earned runs over his last 21 1/3 innings. The veteran has allowed nine runs in the first inning of his last two starts. "I know it's frustrating for him," Matheny said. "And baffling to us to try to put it all together. But, physically he feels good and, after you get past that first inning, he looks good." Westbrook's ERA has bloated from 2.95 to 4.35 since July 24.

Fri Aug 16 201320:16Jake Westbrook gets roughed up by Cubs
Jake Westbrook struggled through 6 2/3 innings on Friday, giving up seven runs -- six earned -- and walking five against the Cubs.
One of the walks was intentional, but even so, that still makes four unintentional walks for Westbrook in two of his last three outings. He's lost four straight starts and hasn't looked very good in any of them. The Cardinals have too many alternatives to keep giving him the ball while he's struggling like this. Maybe they'll go to Michael Wacha or Carlos Martinez next.

Sun Aug 11 201310:19Jake Westbrook won't start until Friday
Jake Westbrook won't make his next start until Friday in Chicago.
Westbrook threw over 100 pitches on three days' rest after relieving an injured Shelby Miller last Wednesday, so the Cardinals are giving him some extra rest. The sinkerballer holds an 11.05 ERA over his last 14 2/3 innings.

Sat Aug 3 201322:18Westbrook loses control in loss against Reds
Jake Westbrook allowed five runs in five innings in a loss to the Reds on Saturday.
Westbrook wasn't sharp from the outset, and he finished with five walks and four hits allowed. He moved to 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA on the year, as he's come down quickly in his last two starts after beginning the season strong. The right-hander will look to get back on track against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Wed Jul 24 201323:29Westbrook allows three runs but Cards win
Jake Westbrook yielded three runs in seven innings but the Cardinals beat the Phillies on Wednesday.
St. Louis' offense exploded for 11 runs and Westbrook simply threw strikes, yielding nine hits but no walks. The veteran sinkerballer will carry a 2.95 ERA into his next start Monday in Pittsburgh. He doesn't strike out many batters, but the ERA and potential for wins keep him somewhat relevant in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

Fri Jul 19 201323:33Westbrook hurls 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball
Jake Westbrook hurled 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball on eight hits in a win over the Padres on Friday.
He struck out just one and walked three. The veteran right-hander has notched three consecutive quality starts, the first consistency he's shown since returning from the disabled list in mid-June. Westbrook improves to 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA.

Fri Jul 5 201323:51Westbrook gives up one run in win vs. Marlins
Jake Westbrook spun seven innings of one-run ball in 4-1 win over the Marlins on Friday.
Westbrook failed to register a strikeout, but he limited the Marlins to just three hits and didn't walk a batter. The veteran right-hander also induced 19 ground balls. The only run scored on a solo homer by Logan Morrison in the second inning. Westbrook has an impressive 2.78 ERA on the season, but he has been hit-or-miss since returning from the disabled list and his 27/26 K/BB ratio indicates that more regression is likely on the way. Don't get carried away in fantasy leagues.
