Red Sox purchased the contract of C Gustavo Molina from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Molina, no relation to the other Molinas, will be the primary backup catcher to Jason Varitek while Victor Martinez is on the disabled list. The 28-year-old had a .239/.292/.418 batting line to go along with three homers and seven RBI in 67 at-bats with the PawSox. He hasn't appeared in the major leagues since playing two games with the Mets during the 2008 season.
