Both Burgos and Matt Stites will return to the Arizona bullpen as rosters officially expand Tuesday. Burgos worked in 22 games for the Diamondbacks earlier this season, holding down a 5.14 ERA while allowing 13 earned runs over 21 innings. He's struggled a bit at the Triple-A level, allowing 10 earned runs and 12 walks in 15 innings (15 appearances).

Burgos was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

Burgos has seen relatively consistent work in the Arizona bullpen this season, but the team had endured enough after watching him allow four earned runs in his last two appearances. Matt Stites will take his spot in the pen for the time being, but Burgos will likely be back around before the end of the year.

Burgos picked up his first major league win Monday, pitching a scoreless eighth inning against the Dodgers, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Burgos has effective, but erratic this year for the D-backs, striking out 26 in 16.2 innings while walking nine. He throws hard (averaging 9.64 mph on his fastball) and if he harnesses his command he could be quite effective. Burgos has posted a 3.78 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while collecting two saves this year.

Burgos hit the disabled list at the end of May due to shoulder tendinitis, and he'll return to the team after a successful rehab stint at Double-A Mobile. The right-hander has appeared in 13 games for the Diamondbacks, notching two saves and posting a 4.61 ERA with 25 strikeouts over 13.2 innings. In a corresponding move, the team optioned Addison Reed to Triple-A Reno.

Before going down with shoulder tendinitis, Burgos was striking out batters at an impressive clip, mowing down 16.5 hitters per nine innings. Upon his return to the Diamondbacks, he should slot back into a middle relief role, but he could find himself in the closer mix down the road.

The 24-year-old has posted a 4.61 ERA and 1.46 WHIP thus far, but has 25 strikeouts in 13.2 innings and had gotten some save chances prior to his injury. He is an interesting arm in deep leagues and could be worth speculating on for saves when he shows that he's healthy.

Burgos may need a bit more than 15 days rest and will need a rehab assignment before returning. The hard-throwing rookie had a 4.61 ERA and 1.46 WHIP before going on the DL, but also had 16.46 K/9, one of the top marks in baseball. He could be in the mix for saves when he gets back, if he proves healthy.

Burgos faced just two hitters in Monday's game against the Cardinals before exiting with the injury. He has a 4.61 ERA and eight walks through 13.2 innings, but he has impressively struck out 25 of the 59 batters (42.4 percent) he's faced. If he can merely get his control to a respectable level, Burgos has the potential to be an effective closer. The Diamondbacks' current ninth-inning man, Brad Ziegler, is a solid but unspectacular ground-ball artist who most teams would prefer to use in a setup role.

Burgos is dealing with soreness in his right shoulder, The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reports.

Burgos struggled Saturday, then left Monday's game without getting an out. D-Backs manager Chip Hale said the team is going to consider a roster move, which could mean that Burgos hits the DL or that the team makes a move to bolster its short-term bullpen depth. In either case, consider Burgos -- who said his shoulder felt "heavy and sore" -- out for at least a few days, pending further news.

Burgos was charged with the loss Saturday against the Cubs, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits, including a home run, while striking out the side in his one inning of work.

Burgos was called on to work the top of the ninth in a tie game, but the three-run home run he gave up to Anthony Rizzo was the margin of victory in this one. While he has picked up two saves this week, and has an eye popping strikeout rate (43.9 percent), Burgos' lack of command (14 percent walk rate) could prevent him from becoming a trusted late inning option for Arizona. He's a flyer outside of deep leagues right now.

Burgos grabbed his second save Tuesday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning with a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts against the Marlins.

Burgos has picked up saves on consecutive nights for the D-Backs. Burgos clearly has strikeout stuff, but is also short on command, so it's not clear that he can take the closer job and run with it. Manager Chip Hale didn't anoint Burgos the closer after Tuesday's game, but he positive about his performance and it bears watching whether he will have the confidence to go to Burgos again the next time the D-Backs have a save chance.

Burgos earned his first save of the season Monday, tossing a shutout 13th inning against the Marlins.

Burgos got the nod for the save opportunity after both Brad Zeigler and Addison Reed had already been used in the extra-inning game. Burgos has been a strikeout machine since coming up to the Major Leagues and now owns a 3.86 ERA through 11.2 innings.
