RHP Mayckol Guiape, who made 26 appearances with the Mariners over the past two seasons but was pitching in Triple-A, was released Thursday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Seattle made a flurry of moves Thursday afternoon, with Guiape being the odd man out. He had a 5.29 ERA during several call-ups in 2015 and 2016.

RHP Mayckol Guaipe was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to make room for RHP Joaquin Benoit. Guaipe made five appearances this season for the Mariners, allowing eight hits and six runs (four earned runs) in 7.1 innings pitched (4.91 ERA) after being recalled April 25. Guaipe also had three saves with a 2.16 ERA (2 ER, 8.1 IP) with six strikeouts in six games with Triple-A Tacoma.

Given the expanded rosters on tap come Monday, it wouldn't be surprising if the 25-year-old remains with the team the remainder of the season in a middle relief role.

Guaipe will return to the minors 10 days after being recalled. The 24-year-old is 0-3 with the Mariners this season with a 6.97 ERA, but will now look to build on his 3.02 ERA he has posted in Triple-A this season.

Guaipe made two appearances after being called up Saturday. He struggled Monday against Detroit, allowing three earned runs without recording an out, and he conceded one earned run on three hits in Wednesday's loss, also to Detroit.

Guaipe, who will receive his second career cup of coffee, has put together five saves, a 3.94 ERA, a 1.404 WHIP, and a 25:7 K:BB in 29.2 innings at Tacoma this season.

Guaipe, who made his major league debut Monday, pitched 2.1 innings in the win over New York, striking out two while not allowing a hit. He'll return to Tacoma as Mike Montgomery comes up to start Tuesday's contest.

Guaipe's numbers at Triple-A haven't been stellar - 0-2, 4.58 ERA - but he's stuck out 18 batters in 19.2 total innings while issuing only three walks. He'll primarily provide depth to the Seattle bullpen and will take the roster spot of Chris Taylor, who was optioned to Tacoma on Monday.

Guaipe, who has 18 strikeouts in 18.2 innings at Triple-A TAcoma, could be called up when the Mariners need another reliever, the Seattle Times reports.

The Mariners are carrying six relievers and likely will need an extra arm soon. Guaipe was added to the 40-man roster last fall. He really improved his control the last couple years, posting a 1.45 BB/9 in 56 innings at Double-A Jackson last season and a 1.48 BB/9 this year at Triple-A Tacoma.
