RHP Brandon Cunniff allowed a home run to Justin Upton Friday. It snapped a streak of 62 1/3 homerless innings by the Atlanta bullpen, dating back to Sept. 11. The Atlanta bullpen allowed a major-league low two home runs in September.

He appeared in 38 combined games with Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi and was 3-4 with a 3.68 ERA, striking out 42 in 49 1/3 innings. Cunniff pitched for Gwinnett on Tuesday and struck out four of the six batters he faced.

He has a 4.23 ERA in 27.2 relief innings for the Braves this year, so while he strikes out just over a batter per inning, there isn't much fantasy value to be extracted in most formats. Sugar Ray Marimon was recalled as a corresponding move.

Cunniff (2-2) took the loss in extra innings Thursday against the Padres, giving up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over two frames.

He did strike out a pair -- in fact, Cunniff has been an asset as far as that goes, with 25 punchouts in 24.1 innings. After a couple rocky outings in late May and early June, he'd settled down with five consecutive scoreless appearances before letting the Padres rally for a pair of runs in the 11th inning of Thursday's game. Cunniff pitched the eighth inning Wednesday, but will likely more typically occupy a lower-leverage role thanks to his extreme lefty-righty splits; right-handed hitters came into Thursday hitting just .077 against him, while lefty bats are at .292. It was the switch-hitting Yangervis Solarte -- batting lefty, of course -- who knocked home the game-winning runs.

The right-hander will get another opportunity in the major league bullpen with lefty Donnie Veal designated for assignment. Cunniff turned in a 2.00 ERA over 10 appearances with the big club to start the year despite issuing six walks in his nine innings, thanks to a .056 opponents' BABIP.

He was used frequently out of the bullpen during his stay with the Braves, and leaves with a 2.00 ERA and a 0.780 WHIP. There's a solid chance he will be recalled again in the not-so-distant future.
