RHP Roberto Hernandez earned his first win in more than a year Saturday night, benefitting from a big early lead and his team's season-high 13 runs. Hernandez lasted five-plus innings, allowing six hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeouts. He retired seven in a row in one stretch, not allowing a ball out of the infield in that span, and could get another start Thursday in Milwaukee.

RHP Roberto Hernandez will be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday night to start the series' second game in St. Louis. Hernandez, known as Fausto Carmona when he won 19 games for the 2007 Cleveland Indians, has spent the season in the International League, going 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 16 starts between Buffalo and Gwinnett. He was signed by Atlanta on July 15.

Hernandez was placed on release waivers Friday and is seeking another big league job, the Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich reports.

His time with the Astros is over, and while Hernandez is seeking a big league opportunity, his 4.36 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 84.2 innings this season probably won't entice other teams to come calling.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Hernandez has "done everything we've asked." This move makes a roster space for Jed Lowrie to return from the 60-day disabled list to start in Thursday's game.

Hernandez will face a difficult test for his next start Sunday at Detroit.

Hernandez gave up five hits and five runs, with only one earned run. He struck out two batters while walking four. When Brett Oberholtzer returns from a finger injury, Hernandez's position in the rotation could be in jeopardy.

The Astros officially called up Hernandez on Saturday.

He'll open the year in the rotation with Brett Oberholtzer on the 15-day DL. He got the nod over Dan Straily, who was optioned last week, and Alex White, who was designated for assignment Saturday.

Hernandez will start either the third, fourth, or fifth game for Houston this season, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Hernandez has been added to Houston's rotation ahead of Opening Day, but his spot in the rotation is yet to be determined.
