Sat Mar 2 201916:07Ilitch says Tigers building the right way
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — As the Detroit Tigers prepare for what could be another tough season, Chris Ilitch can look back on a couple success stories from the Motor City's recent past."I've had a wonderful opportunity, having lived through building a four-time Stanley Cup champion in the Detroit Red Wings, and championship teams with the Detroit Tigers, and World Series participants," Ilitch said. "I think as you look back on how those clubs were built, they were built in large part, exactly the way we're building this club."Ilitch, the CEO of both the Tigers and Red Wings, was at spring training Saturday and took some questions from reporters in the dugout. Detroit lost 98 games in each of the past two seasons and remains in a rebuilding mode, but Ilitch said he's optimistic about the future. He also said he understands that fans want this process to pay dividends as quickly as possible."I'm a fan, first and foremost. I want to see our team be a great team, a playoff team, and ultimately... [More]

Wed Dec 19 201810:24Mercer the latest quiet addition for busy Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (AP) — Jordy Mercer found out quickly that the Tigers had him on their radar."They were one of the first clubs that we had talks with," Detroit's new shortstop said Tuesday. "It was early on in the process, so I know they were interested. They didn't back down."The rebuilding Tigers aren't a team likely to turn many heads this offseason, but they've wasted little time in pursuing their objectives, making three quiet free agent signings already. Mercer reached a one-year deal with Detroit, and so did pitchers Matt Moore and Tyson Ross. Those moves don't figure to shift the balance of power in the AL Central, but after two straight 98-loss seasons, the Tigers have been content to give out short-term contracts while waiting for some of their top prospects to reach the majors. While other teams have proceeded more slowly this offseason — perhaps waiting to see how the bidding goes for stars like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado — the Tigers have moved fast. So have the Texas Rangers, who... [More]

Mon Oct 1 201818:20Tigers still waiting on top prospects after 98 more losses
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers avoided some of their worst-case scenarios this season. They didn't finish last, or all that close to it.In the end, however, they had the same record as in 2017, and the franchise still seems a long way from contention."Not everything is going to go perfect. As you know, some things are going to turn out good, some not," general manager Al Avila said. "I feel we had a good year for the first year of our rebuild. We played with a lot of players that made their major league debuts. We saw some good performances and we saw some that were not as good."Detroit went 64-98, the same record the Tigers had last year, when they ended up tied for the worst record in baseball. There were a few teams worse than that this season, which may have contributed to the sense that Detroit was exceeding expectations. The Tigers are hoping some of the prospects in their system turn into players they can build around. In that respect, 2018 has been inconclusive. Detroit hasn't... [More]
