He has walked just four batters struck out 17 and limited batters to a .147 batting average. A native or Urbana, Ill., Patton is 2-1 with a 6.75 career ERA in 36 career big league outings.

RHP Spencer Patton was traded by the Rangers to the Cubs on Nov. 20 in exchange for 2B Frandy De La Rosa. Patton, 27, went 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 27 relief appearances for Texas this year. In 26 relief outings for Triple-A Round Rock, he went 11-for-11 in save opportunities and posted a 2-0 record with a 1.67 ERA.

The Rangers are likely just looking for some reinforcement in the bullpen after the team burned through eight relievers in Saturday's 11-10 loss to the Angels. Patton supplied a 9.00 ERA and 28:12 K:BB ratio over 24 innings with the Rangers earlier this season.

After giving up five runs while failing to record an out in Wednesday's game, Patton was swiftly sent down the organizational ladder. Nick Martinez was recalled and figures to take Patton's spot in the big league bullpen.

Patton was brought up to add an extra reliever to the bullpen with at least two bullpen members likely unavailable Thursday. Patton, who appeared in two games with the Rangers earlier this season, figures to work in middle relief.

Patton, who made two appearances with the Rangers during an earlier stint with the big club, owns a minuscule 0.53 ERA to complement a 22:7 K:BB ratio over 17 innings at Round Rock. At least initially, he's expected to see low-leverage work out of the bullpen, but could quickly enter the conversation for setup duties if he should continue to perform well in the majors.

After spending a week-and-a-half with the Rangers, Patton will head back to Round Rock, where he's made eight appearances this season, allowing eight hits and one earned run over 9.1 innings. Patton failed to make the big league team out of spring training, but will get a chance now after a great start to the season in the minors. In eight appearances with Triple-A Round Rock this season, Patton has worked to a 0.96 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 9.1 innings, and will slot into a relief role in the majors.

Patton entered spring training in the mix for a bullpen spot after making his major league debut last season, but he'll begin the year with Triple-A instead. The 27-year-old posted a 3.38 ERA in 16 games at Round Rock after a midseason trade from the Royals, and could work his way back up to the majors at some point this season.
