Thu Jun 8 202316:12Daulton Varsho Getting A Breather ThursdayDaulton VarshoC/CFDiamondbacksFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho is taking the day off on Thursday against the Houston Astros with left-hander Framber Valdez on the mound. Varsho snapped a 10-game hitting streak on Wednesday, but he's gone 7-for-23 (.304) with three home runs and four RBI in seven games since the calendar flipped to June. The 26-year-old has actually hit for a better average against southpaws (.250) than against righties (.216) this year, but he's yet to go deep against a lefty. Overall, he's hitting just .222 (51-for-230) in his first year in Toronto with 11 home runs, 26 RBI and eight stolen bases for fantasy managers. Whit Merrifield is starting in left field and hitting seventh on Thursday, while Santiago Espinal is at the keystone and batting eighth against Valdez.

Thu Jun 8 202316:05Pete Alonso Sitting On Thursday Against AtlantaPete Alonso1BMetsFree Agent
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (wrist) is not in the team's starting lineup on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves. Alonso was forced from Wednesday's contest early after being hit in the wrist by a fastball in the first inning, but thankfully, X-rays came back negative and he's day-to-day with a contusion. The 28-year-old right-handed slugger dodged a bullet and could be back in the lineup as early as Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his absence Thursday, Mark Vientos is getting the start at the cold corner and is hitting ninth in the batting order against Braves right-hander Spencer Strider. Alonso is a must-start in fantasy lineups when he's active, as he currently leads baseball with 22 home runs and 49 RBI in 261 trips to the plate over 62 games played.

Thu Jun 8 202316:00Jorge Polanco Pulled Early With Hamstring TightnessJorge Polanco2B/SSTwinsFree Agent
Minnesota Twins second baseman Jorge Polanco (hamstring) was forced from Thursday's game early against the Tampa Bay Rays with left-hamstring tightness. Polanco injured his hamstring running the bases in the first inning after going 0-for-1. It's the same hamstring that caused him to land on the injured list recently, too, so there's a chance that he'll need to go right back on the IL. That would be a pretty disappointing blow for both the Twins and fantasy managers. The 29-year-old Dominican switch-hitter has only played in 30 games so far this year due to injuries, and he entered Thursday's contest hitting .252 (30-for-119) with nine doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored. Check back for updates on the severity of Polanco's hamstring injury.

Thu Jun 8 202315:00Jose Berrios Aims To Keep Cruising On ThursdayJosé BerríosSPBlue JaysFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios will look to continue his recent dominance Thursday when he takes on the visiting Houston Astros. The veteran right-hander has surrendered just a pair of earned runs over his last three starts spanning 18 2/3 innings of work. He's allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last six starts and two earned runs or fewer in five of those six outings. The excellent stretch has lowered the 29-year-old's season-long ERA to 3.66 while he also sports a 3.71 FIP and 4.04 SIERA while limiting walks to just 7.5% of the hitters he's faced. He'll have his hands full against an Astros lineup that had heated up of late, ranking ninth with a .339 wOBA over the last two weeks.

Thu Jun 8 202314:39Jake Burger Back In The Lineup ThursdayJake Burger3BWhite SoxFree Agent
Chicago White Sox third baseman/designated hitter Jake Burger is back in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader with the New York Yankees and right-hander Luis Severino. Burger should be well rested for Thursday's contest as he last saw game action on Sunday when he hit a walk-off grand slam against the Detroit Tigers. The White Sox were off on Monday and had Wednesday night's game canceled due to poor air quality stemming from the Canadian wildfires. At any rate, Burger has flexed plenty of muscle this season with 12 home runs, seven doubles, and a triple, good for a massive .341 isolated power and a .923 OPS across 145 trips to the plate.

Thu Jun 8 202314:27Billy McKinney Making Season Debut ThursdayBilly McKinneyLF/PH/RFDodgersFree Agent
New York Yankees outfielder Billy McKinney is making his season debut for the big club in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader versus Lance Lynn and the visiting Chicago White Sox. McKinney had his contract selected and signed a major league contract on Thursday at the same time the club placed Aaron Judge on the IL with a big toe sprain. The second go around for McKinney with the Yankees as he spent a number of seasons in their minor-league system before appearing in two big-league games with the club in the 2018 campaign. The 28-year-old hit .274 with nine homers, three stolen bases, and an .899 OPS across 160 trips to the plate with Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

Thu Jun 8 202314:20Willie Calhoun Hitting Leadoff ThursdayWillie CalhounDH/LFRangersFree Agent
New York Yankees outfielder/designated hitter Willie Calhoun has been moved up to the leadoff spot for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Lance Lynn. It's the first start of the season out of the leadoff spot for Calhoun who is being moved up in an effort to stretch out the lineup in the absence of superstar Aaron Judge who is on the IL with a big toe sprain. Following a slow start. Calhoun posted an .805 OPS, .346 wOBA, and a 122 wRC+ in the month of May, mostly as the DH with Giancarlo Stanton sidelined for much of the month. He makes for a nice streaming option Thursday as Lynn has scuffled to a 6.55 ERA and 2.00 HR/9 in 12 starts this season.

Thu Jun 8 202314:10Sean Murphy Sitting Out On ThursdaySean MurphyCAthleticsFree Agent
Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy is not in the starting lineup Thursday night against New York Mets right-hander Justin Verlander. Murphy connected on his 12th home run of the season in Wednesday's victory but will hit the bench to begin Thursday's series finale. For the season, the 28-year-old has erupted for a .287 average alongside those 12 HR alongside a .941 OPS across 211 trips to the plate. Only once in his last 15 starts has Murphy failed to notch at least one hit while he's driven in four runs over his last two contests. Travis d'Arnaud will take over behind the plate and hit cleanup against Verlander Thursday night in Atlanta.

Thu Jun 8 202312:52Yonny Chirinos Called Up To Start ThursdayYonny ChirinosSPRaysFree Agent
The Tampa Bay Rays recalled right-hander Yonny Chirinos from Triple-A Durham on Thursday and optioned pitcher Cooper Criswell to the minors in a corresponding move. Chirinos will make the start on Thursday in the series finale against the Minnesota Twins, pushing Tyler Glasnow back to Friday against the Texas Rangers. Chirinos has been very solid for the Rays this year, going 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA (4.67 FIP), 0.97 WHIP, 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 29 innings over seven appearances (one start). However, the 29-year-old Venezuelan hurler has been a bit lucky and allowed three runs while walking four in 5 1/3 innings in his lone start on May 5 against the New York Yankees. Chirinos will be a poor streaming option that probably won't provide much length.

Thu Jun 8 202312:38Tyler Glasnow Pushed Back To FridayTyler GlasnowSPRaysFree Agent
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow is having his next start pushed back to Friday against the Texas Rangers. Glasnow was originally scheduled to toe the rubber in the series finale on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins, but the Rays have elected to go with Yonny Chirinos instead. Glasnow will get a tougher assignment in the hot-hitting Rangers, but the 29-year-old remains a must-start in fantasy lineups. There's been no indications that Glasnow is dealing with any sort of injury. The hard-throwing right-hander got a late start to the 2023 season due to injury, and he's made only two starts, allowing four runs on nine hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out 14 in 9 2/3 frames.

Thu Jun 8 202312:30Justin Lawrence Blows Save, Takes LossJustin LawrenceSPRockiesFree Agent
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Justin Lawrence blew a save and was saddled with a loss on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants when he allowed two runs on one hit while walking one and striking out two in two innings of work. It was a hiccup in an otherwise solid season to this point for Lawrence, who had picked up the team's last two saves in their last series with the Kansas City Royals. The 28-year-old right-hander should still be considered the favorite for saves in Colorado despite Wednesday's blown save and loss. Overall, Lawrence is sporting a 3.41 ERA (2.73 FIP), 1.08 WHIP, two saves, 13 walks and 37 strikeouts in 34 1/3 relief innings in 2023.

Thu Jun 8 202312:17Willi Castro Hitting Leadoff Against RaysWilli Castro2B/SSTigersFree Agent
Minnesota Twins infielder Willi Castro is starting at second base and is batting leadoff for the team on Thursday against Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Yonny Chirinos. Castro is starting for the sixth straight game for Minnesota, but he'll be bumped up to the top spot in the order for this one. Jorge Polanco will serve as the designated hitter and bat third in the order. Castro has gone 3-for-19 (.158) with a homer, two RBI and eight strikeouts in six games so far in the month of June, so it's not exactly like he's tearing the cover off the baseball of late. He'll have some sleeper DFS appeal in the leadoff spot, but he doesn't have much upside for anything besides stolen bases. The 26-year-old Puerto Rican is hitting .256 (32-for-125) with five homers, 12 RBI and 11 steals on the season.

Thu Jun 8 202312:11Yandy Diaz Dealing With Minor Hip InjuryYandy Díaz1B/3BRaysFree Agent
Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yandy Diaz (hip) will miss another game on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins because he's being bothered by his left hip. However, he'll be available off the bench on Thursday and expects to return to the starting lineup on Friday against the Texas Rangers. The 31-year-old is missing his second straight game because of the hip injury, but he should be available again to fantasy managers this weekend against Texas. Luke Raley is getting the nod at first base on Thursday and is batting cleanup against Twins right-hander Bailey Ober. Diaz has been a must-start in all fantasy leagues this year when he's been in the lineups, as he's hitting an impressive .316 (62-for-196) with 13 doubles, 12 home runs, 34 RBI and 41 runs scored in 52 games. He's only two homers away from tying his career-high of 14 homers set in 2019.

Thu Jun 8 202312:00Dodgers Put Noah Syndergaard On Injured ListNoah SyndergaardSPMetsFree Agent
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with a blister on his right index finger. Manager Dave Roberts said the team will build Syndergaard back up slowly once his blister heals. The Dodgers are in no hurry to rush the 30-year-old right-hander back out there after he has gone 1-4 with an ugly 7.16 ERA (5.55 FIP), 1.45 WHIP, nine walks and only 38 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings over his 12 starts for the Blue so far in 2023. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can send Thor to the waiver wire, and there's a chance he won't even have a rotation spot available to him once he's healthy enough and stretched out for a return to the big leagues.

Thu Jun 8 202309:59Bailey Ober Toeing The Rubber ThursdayBailey OberSPTwinsFree Agent
Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober will get the ball for Thursday's matchup with Yonny Chirinos and the Tampa Bay Rays. The 27-year-old has done well after stepping into the rotation on April 23, posting a 3-2 record, 2.33 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 22.5% strikeout rate. The Rays will be a tough opponent, with their league-leading .816 OPS, so fantasy managers in shallow leagues may want to leave Ober on their bench, especially considering his lack of strikeouts.

Thu Jun 8 202309:42Trayce Thompson To Miss More Than A MonthTrayce ThompsonCFCubsFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson (oblique) will miss more than a month of action due to the oblique strain he suffered on June 3, according to manager Dave Roberts. He should return before the season ends, though he hasn't offered much fantasy value over 36 games. Before going on the shelf, Thompson was hitting a lowly .151 with five homers, 12 runs, and 14 RBI. James Outman will likely continue to get most of the reps in center. After starting the season hot, the 26-year-old has struggled lately and is now slashing .230/.319/.454 with nine homers, seven steals, 29 runs, and 30 RBI.

Thu Jun 8 202309:28Danny Jansen Aiming For Weekend Rehab AssignmentDanny JansenCBlue JaysFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays backstop Danny Jansen (groin) has ramped up his baseball activities lately and will likely join Triple-A Buffalo on Friday to begin a rehab assignment, according to MLB.com. If everything goes well, the 28-year-old could rejoin the Blue Jays on June 13 for their series against the Baltimore Orioles. Jansen's been on the injured list since May 26 after straining his left groin during a game on May 24. Before that, the former prospect was hitting just .207 with six bombs, 16 runs, and 26 RBI over 36 games. Jansen's value is limited in roto leagues due to his career .221 batting average, but he's a solid bat in points formats, thanks to a .477 slugging percentage since 2021.

Thu Jun 8 202309:17Alex Cobb Taking On The Rockies ThursdayAlex CobbSPAngelsFree Agent
San Francisco Giants right-hander Alex Cobb is scheduled for Thursday's start against the Colorado Rockies, according to MLB.com. The 35-year-old has been solid once again in 2023, posting a 2.71 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 21.8% strikeout rate with a 5-2 record across 12 starts. Cobb's value has been limited this year in shallow leagues due to his strikeout numbers, but he's a must-roster in deeper formats. Although Cobb will be pitching in Colorado, fantasy managers may want to keep him in their lineup, as the Rockies are running a meager .722 OPS as a team and are just 26-37.

Thu Jun 8 202309:12Ryan Helsley Earns His Seventh Save WednesdayRyan HelsleyRPCardinalsFree Agent
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley picked up save No. 7 on Wednesday when his club defeated the Texas Rangers 1-0. He pitched the ninth inning, recording a pair of strikeouts without giving up any hits or walks. Helsley has been dominant once again, pitching to a 3.24 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with a 32.0% strikeout rate across 25 innings. The saves haven't been there yet for the right-hander, as the Cardinals have gone 26-37 to begin 2023, but more should come and he should continue to lead the team's bullpen.

Thu Jun 8 202309:05A.J. Minter Records His Eighth Save On WednesdayA.J. MinterRPBravesFree Agent
Atlanta Braves left-hander A.J. Minter registered his eighth save of the season after closing out Wednesday's 7-5 win over the New York Mets. He went one inning, allowing no baserunners while striking out one. Minter is now sporting a 6.04 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 30.4% strikeout rate with a pair of holds over 28.1 innings. The 29-year-old began the year as the closer, but after Raisel Iglesias returned from the injured list, he moved to a set-up role. Despite his numbers, fantasy managers should expect Minter to back up Iglesias for save opportunities while picking up a fair share of holds.
