SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon needs Tommy John surgery, the team said Tuesday. Although no date has been set for the operation for the 22-year-old from Cuba, it will be performed by Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, head physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Morejon came out of his second start of the season, at Texas on April 11, after throwing just 16 pitches in 2/3 of an inning. He had no record and a 3.86 ERA in 4 2/3 innings. The Padres signed Morejon to an $11 million bonus in July 2016 as the top pitching prospect in the 2016-17 international class. He made his big league debut on July 21, 2019. CHICAGO (AP) — The New York Mets tweaked their rotation before their series against the Chicago Cubs, giving ace right-hander Jacob deGrom an extra day of rest. The 32-year-old deGrom was slated to start Thursday at Wrigley Field, but the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was moved back to Friday's home game against the Washington Nationals. The change puts Joey Lucchesi back on regular rest after the left-hander threw 55 pitches while working three innings during New York's 7-2 loss at Colorado in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mets won two of three against the Rockies over the weekend, and then were off Monday. Manager Luis Rojas said deGrom asked for the extra rest. “Jake this time wanted the extra day, and it keeps Lucchesi in line, too,” Rojas said before Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs. “So it just works well. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Minnesota Twins right fielder Max Kepler is among the club's positive cases for the coronavirus. Manager Rocco Baldelli announced Kepler's absence with COVID-19 ahead of a doubleheader Tuesday against the Athletics. The scheduled opener of the series Monday was postponed, as were the Twins' final two games against the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend, because of the outbreak on the team. Left-hander Caleb Thielbar is also in quarantine because of contact tracing. SEATTLE (AP) — Mookie Betts was out of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup on Tuesday after getting hit on the right forearm a night earlier, but manager Dave Roberts doesn’t expect it to be a long-term issue. Roberts said X-rays on Betts’ arm were negative after the former MVP took a fastball from Seattle closer Rafael Montero off the inside of his right forearm in the ninth inning of Monday’s 4-3 Mariners victory. Betts remained in the game after getting hit. Roberts said Betts was receiving treatment and that he was hoping to avoid using him in Tuesday’s game with the Dodgers having a day off on Wednesday before opening a four-game series with division rival San Diego on Thursday at Dodger Stadium. “I was hoping that it would be something soft tissue, as opposed to you know the wrist or the elbow or something like that,” Roberts said. “I guess best case scenario. The annual survey of opening day baseball salaries by The Associated Press usually reveals something interesting about the state of the game, and this year’s version was even more interesting than most. Here’s a tidbit from it that borders on surprising: Despite all you hear and read about the game's huge salaries, a big percentage of major league baseball players aren’t millionaires. That’s not to say they won’t be by the time they’re done playing. Even those playing for minimum salary — assuming they are somewhat frugal with their money — will eventually end up with a pile of cash if their careers last long enough. And then, of course, there’s Trevor Bauer making $38 million in Los Angeles this season and Francisco Lindor’s staggering 10-year, $341 million contract with the New York Mets.
