SEATTLE (AP) — Julio UrĂas threw seven dominant innings of one-hit ball, striking out a career-high 11 and leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. Corey Seager drove in the only run with a two-out single in the third inning after AJ Pollock’s leadoff double. Those were the Dodgers’ only hits in the game. Seattle’s lone hit against UrĂas (3-0) was Mitch Haniger’s slow infield single with two outs in the third inning. Victor González worked the eighth, and Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save to complete the one-hittter. Gonzales (1-2) allowed two hits and struck out six. He retired the final 13 batters he faced. ATHLETICS 7, TWINS 0 OAKLAND, Calif. SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon needs Tommy John surgery, the team said Tuesday. Although no date has been set for the operation for the 22-year-old from Cuba, it will be performed by Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, head physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Morejon came out of his second start of the season, at Texas on April 11, after throwing just 16 pitches in 2/3 of an inning. He had no record and a 3.86 ERA in 4 2/3 innings. The Padres signed Morejon to an $11 million bonus in July 2016 as the top pitching prospect in the 2016-17 international class. He made his big league debut on July 21, 2019. He's made 16 appearances in three seasons, including eight starts, and is 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB |

CHICAGO (AP) — The New York Mets tweaked their rotation before their series against the Chicago Cubs, giving ace right-hander Jacob deGrom an extra day of rest. The 32-year-old deGrom was slated to start Thursday at Wrigley Field, but the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was moved back to Friday's home game against the Washington Nationals. The change puts Joey Lucchesi back on regular rest after the left-hander threw 55 pitches while working three innings during New York's 7-2 loss at Colorado in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mets won two of three against the Rockies over the weekend, and then were off Monday. Manager Luis Rojas said deGrom asked for the extra rest. “Jake this time wanted the extra day, and it keeps Lucchesi in line, too,” Rojas said before Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs. “So it just works well. He had the lesser amount of pitches in his outing, so we're going with him on Thursday and then Jake will pitch when we get back to New York.” DeGrom worked six innings in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, striking out 14 for the second straight outing and leading the Mets to a 4-3 victory. He is 1-1 with a sparkling 0.45 ERA over his first three starts. DeGrom's performance against the Rockies included nine straight strikeouts, one shy of Tom Seaver's major league record. He finished with 99 pitches, 67 for strikes. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports |

The scheduled opener of the series Monday was postponed, as were the Twins' final two games against the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend, because of the outbreak on the team. Left-hander Caleb Thielbar is also in quarantine because of contact tracing. Baldelli said Thielbar spent a significant amount of time around one of the positive players, but he expects the reliever may not miss as much time and “his specifics are a little bit different than the other guys.” Everyone who has tested positive is experiencing only mild symptoms, according to Baldelli. “All of them are quarantined in Anaheim at the hotel still and we’ll be keeping close contact with them and giving them everything they need,” Baldelli said. SEATTLE (AP) — Mookie Betts was out of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup on Tuesday after getting hit on the right forearm a night earlier, but manager Dave Roberts doesn’t expect it to be a long-term issue. Roberts said X-rays on Betts’ arm were negative after the former MVP took a fastball from Seattle closer Rafael Montero off the inside of his right forearm in the ninth inning of Monday’s 4-3 Mariners victory. Betts remained in the game after getting hit. Roberts said Betts was receiving treatment and that he was hoping to avoid using him in Tuesday’s game with the Dodgers having a day off on Wednesday before opening a four-game series with division rival San Diego on Thursday at Dodger Stadium. “I was hoping that it would be something soft tissue, as opposed to you know the wrist or the elbow or something like that,” Roberts said. “I guess best case scenario. There was an exhale once he wanted to stay in there. So that’s part of it, the soreness, but I think that we dodged a bullet there.” Betts is hitting .292 early in the season and already had one of the signature defensive moments of the season with his game-ending catch in the ninth inning last Saturday in a win over San Diego. Chris Taylor started in center field for the Dodgers. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports |

The annual survey of opening day baseball salaries by The Associated Press usually reveals something interesting about the state of the game, and this year’s version was even more interesting than most. Here’s a tidbit from it that borders on surprising: Despite all you hear and read about the game's huge salaries, a big percentage of major league baseball players aren’t millionaires. That’s not to say they won’t be by the time they’re done playing. Even those playing for minimum salary — assuming they are somewhat frugal with their money — will eventually end up with a pile of cash if their careers last long enough. And then, of course, there’s Trevor Bauer making $38 million in Los Angeles this season and Francisco Lindor’s staggering 10-year, $341 million contract with the New York Mets. But of the 902 players on opening-day rosters, 417 had salaries under $1 million. That included 316 — basically 1 of 3 players — making under $600,000. Equally startling in the annual study by AP Baseball... [ More] |

His coaches and a few players, including Gausman, came into his office and had a drink together to celebrate his 200th win. “Hopefully it was a good win for him coming back to Philly,” Gausman said. Gausman (1-0) allowed six hits, walked four and struck out five. He lowered his ERA to 2.45. “This was a battle for Gaus,” Kapler said. “This was one of the more impressive starts I’ve seen from him because he had to grind through... [ More] |
