Thu Aug 26 202121:36Hyun-Jin Ryu Lit Up By White Sox
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was touched up for seven runs over 3 2/3 IP versus the White Sox on Thursday as his club went on to a 10-7 loss. The left-hander gave up three home runs on his seven hits while walking one and striking out four in the abbreviated outing, dropping his record to 12-7 on the campaign. It's been a rough month of August for Ryu who has pitched to a 6.51 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in five starts as he's now up over the 140 IP plateau for just the second time since 2014. Durability may be to blame for his second half struggles, but he'll have a chance to rebound next week versus the Orioles.

Sat Aug 21 202121:15Hyun-Jin Ryu Earns 12th Win
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was excellent on Saturday, tossing seven-shutout frames in the club's 3-0 win over the Tigers. The veteran southpaw allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out five in the 105-pitch effort, improving his record to 12-6 on the campaign. Ryu recorded all of his outs on the ground or at the plate, including getting the Tigers batters to ground into three double plays. He now sits with a 3.54 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, although we'd like to see a little more than 111 K through 140 IP on the year. Overall it's still been a solid year for Ryu who will look to keep his momentum into his next start versus the White Sox.

Sun Aug 15 202109:15Hyun-Jin Ryu Suffers The Loss Versus Seattle
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu took the loss on Saturday to drop his record to 11-6 as his club was defeated by the Mariners 9-3. Other than serving up a two-run homer to Ty France in the first, the veteran was solid throughout the game until he put a couple runners on in the seventh before getting the hook. Trevor Richards subsequently allowed a home run, so Ryu was credited with four earned runs on the night on three hits, two walks, and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 IP. He now owns a 3.72 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 106 K in 133 IP as he looks ahead to his next matchup at home versus the Tigers,

Sun Aug 8 202117:26Hyun-Jin Ryu Roughed Up By Red Sox
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was roughed up by the Red Sox on Sunday, allowing seven earned runs over 3 2/3 IP. The veteran southpaw wasn't at his sharpest by surrendering 10 hits and a walk while recording just one strikeout, but his offense bailed him out late to give him a no-decision. Ryu still holds a respectable 3.62 ERA and 1.18 WHIP on the year, but with 103 K in 126 2/3 IP, his inability to miss bats makes him prone to outings like this one if his pitch mix isn't on point. He'll look to rebound in his next scheduled start versus the Mariners.

Thu Jul 29 202122:37Hyun-Jin Ryu Earns 10th Win
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed six scoreless innings on Thursday as his club rolled to a 13-1 victory over the Red Sox. The veteran southpaw struck out five and surrendered just two hits with no walks in the impressive 87-pitch outing to lower his ERA to 3.26 on the year. Ryu was handed a four-run lead early and the offense kept piling on the runs all night, giving him plenty of comfort on the mound to earn his 10th win of the year. The 34-year-old hasn't pitched all that consistently over the past few weeks, but he should be in starting lineups in his next tilt versus the Indians.

Sun Jul 18 202103:01LEADING OFF: Pads-Nats resume after shooting outside DC park
A look at what’s happening around the majors today: SUSPENSION AFTER SHOOTING The San Diego Padres and Washington will resume their game after it was suspended because of a shooting outside Nationals Park. The game Saturday night was halted in the sixth inning with the Padres ahead 8-4. The shooting caused echoes of gunfire inside the stadium and prompted many fans to clear the seats and sent some scrambling for safety in the San Diego dugout. The shooting, an exchange of gunfire between people in two cars, left three people injured, according to Ashan Benedict, the Metropolitan Police Department’s executive assistant police chief. One of the people who was shot was a woman who was attending the game and who was struck while she was outside the stadium, he said. Her injuries weren’t considered life-threatening. Two people who were in one of the cars later walked into a local hospital with gunshot wounds and were being questioned by investigators, Benedict said, and the extent of their injuries... [More]

Sat Jul 17 202122:21LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Padres again, Bassitt's streak
A look at what’s happening around the majors Sunday: ANOTHER CHANCE Washington ace Max Scherzer gets another look at Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres when the Nationals close out a weekend series against San Diego. Scherzer was hit hard by the Padres on July 8, giving up a grand slam to reliever Daniel Camarena during Washington's 9-8 loss. Scherzer (7-4, 2.66 ERA) had been pitching well before that no-decision, going 6-2 with a 1.68 ERA in his previous 11 outings. He started the All-Star Game for the National League on Tuesday and tossed a perfect inning. Joe Musgrove (5-7, 2.93) takes the ball for San Diego. A-OK Athletics All-Star Chris Bassitt (10-2, 3.28 ERA) takes a 10-game winning streak into a matchup with Cleveland at the Coliseum. The 32-year-old righty dropped his first two starts of the year and hasn’t lost in 17 outings since. Bassitt’s streak is the longest by an Oakland pitcher since Mike Fiers won 12 straight in 2019. Indians right-hander Zach Plesac (4-3, 4.11) has won... [More]

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The game between the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday was postponed because of rain. Toronto entered Saturday in third place in the AL East, eight games behind first-place Boston. Texas has lost seven of 10 and is last in the AL West. The Blue Jays on Friday received approval from the Canadian government for an exemption on border restrictions that would allow them to return to Canada for a homestand that begins on July 30. TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays were given approval from the Canadian government on Friday for an exemption on border restrictions that would allow them to play in Canada later this month. The Blue Jays had asked the federal government to allow them to play at Rogers Centre starting July 30 and wanted a response by Friday. “We haven’t had a home game in 650-some days. It’s definitely going to be an energy boost the minute we walk out there. I’m so excited to just hear that national anthem,” Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Borucki said. The Blue Jays played home games during the shortened 2020 season in Buffalo, New York, and started this season in Dunedin, Florida, before moving to Buffalo. The Canadian government didn’t allow the team to play in Toronto because of the risk of spreading COVID-19, citing frequent travel required in the U.S. during a baseball season. “We’re the Toronto Blue Jays, so it will be great to be home and show this team to the city and the nation,” manager Charlie Montoyo... TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays won't find out by this weekend whether they will get permission from the federal government to play in Canada soon, a government official familiar with the talks told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
