Tue Jun 6 202301:11Gary Sanchez Goes Deep In Win Over The Cubs
San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk, and a strikeout in a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Sanchez took Kyle Hendricks deep with Manny Machado aboard for his third long ball of the season in the bottom of the second inning. The 30-year-old slugger is slashing .259/.300/.593 to go along with three home runs and seven RBI across 27 at-bats so far this season. He isn't playing every day but Sanchez definitely has some fantasy appeal in deeper mixed and two-catcher leagues.

Thu Jun 1 202319:15Gary Sanchez Goes Yard In Consecutive Games
San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored in Thursday's easy 10-1 win over the Miami Marlins. The 30-year-old is hitting .294 (5-for-17) with two long balls and five RBI in six games this year. It's been quite some time since the once-heralded New York Yankees prodigy has been a fantasy beast, but Sanchez has at least produced in very limited 2023 action. The former Silver Slugger's lack of defensive acumen behind the plate is no secret, but San Diego is in search of an everyday option at designated hitter with neither veteran Nelson Cruz nor Matt Carpenter catching lightning in a bottle. Fantasy managers should keep Sanchez on the back end of their watchlists to see if the two-time All-Star carves out a semi-regular role in the star-studded Friars lineup.

Tue May 30 202315:22Brett Sullivan Optioned To Clear Space For Gary Sanchez
San Diego Padres catcher Brett Sullivan has been optioned to Triple-A to make space for fellow backstop Gary Sanchez, who was signed by the club Monday night. Needless to say, it was a tough go for Sullivan in his first taste of big-league action this season. The 29-year-old hit just .170 with one homer and a .482 OPS across a rather small sample size of 49 plate appearances on the campaign. Unfortunately for the Padres, Sullivan isn't their only struggling catcher, as Austin Nola is hitting a putrid .131 with one homer and a .434 OPS across his 118 trips to the plate. All told, Padres catchers have combined to produce an MLB-worst .218 wOBA this season, hence the flier on Sanchez despite his own struggles in recent seasons.

Mon May 29 202318:41Gary Sanchez Claimed Off Waivers By Padres
The San Diego Padres have claimed veteran catcher Gary Sanchez off waivers from the New York Mets after he was designated for assignment last Thursday. The former Yankees backstop made just seven trips to the plate for the Mets, going 1-for-17 with an RBI in that time. It's been a rough stretch for a player who burst onto the scene with 20 home runs in just 53 games as a rookie in the 2016 season. Sanchez hit just .205 with 16 home runs and a .659 OPS with the Twins last season before struggling to find a home on the open market this winter. He was signed by the Giants but didn't appear in a big-league game before eventually landing with the Mets for three game appearances. He'll get an opportunity to contribute for a Padres team that ranks dead last with a .218 wOBA from their catchers this season.

Thu May 25 202319:45Tomas Nido Reinstated From Injured List, Gary Sanchez DFA'd
The New York Mets reinstated catcher Tomas Nido (eye) from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and designated catcher Gary Sanchez for assignment in a corresponding move. Nido missed some time with vision issues, but apparently he's fixed them and is ready face big-league pitching again. Omar Narvaez (calf) is nearing a return from his injured-list stint as well, so for now, Nido will split playing time behind the plate in Queens with youngster Francisco Alvarez. The 29-year-old Nido offers very little fantasy-wise in the deepest of leagues with a .213 career average and only 13 home runs in seven big-league seasons. Sanchez is likely to join Triple-A Syracuse after going 1-for-6 with an RBI and three strikeouts in three games played for the Mets.

Thu May 18 202323:43Mets Calling Up Gary Sanchez
The New York Mets are calling up catcher Gary Sanchez from the minors, according to sources, and he'll be on the team's active roster on Friday. Sanchez has an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract for Friday, so the team apparently doesn't want to let him go just yet. The 30-year-old former New York Yankee backstop was hitting .208 16-for-77 with a home run and 13 RBI with Triple-A Syracuse and Triple-A Sacramento in 23 games this year, but he had gone 7-for-22 (.318) with a homer and five RBI for Syracuse before the Mets called him up. Although Francisco Alvarez was apparently dinged up in Wednesday's extra-inning game, New York also has Michael Perez. Unless Alvarez requires a trip to the injured list, Sanchez probably won't see much playing time.

Tue May 9 202308:59Mets, Gary Sanchez Agree To A Minor-League Deal Tuesday
The New York Mets and catcher Gary Sanchez agreed to a minor-league contract on Tuesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. The 30-year-old backstop hasn't appeared in the Majors this season but played with the San Francisco Giants Triple-A team for 16 games before opting out. Sanchez will provide the Mets with some reassurance behind the plate, as Francisco Alvarez has struggled to hit big-league pitching, and Tomas Nido is having the worst offensive campaign of his career. In 2022, the former New York Yankee slashed .205/.282/.377 with 16 bombs, 42 runs, 61 RBI, and two stolen bases across 128 games as a member of the Minnesota Twins. Fantasy managers should leave Sanchez on the waiver wire unless he replaces Alvarez as the starting catcher later this season.

Tue May 2 202318:25Gary Sanchez Opts Out Of Contract
San Francisco Giants catcher Gary Sanchez has decided to opt-out of his contract with the team. The 30-year-old signed with the team following spring training, but had an opt-out clause if he wasn't promoted to the big league roster by May 1. Unsurprisingly, Sanchez has decided to move on from the Giants and attempt to catch on elsewhere. He slashed a rough .164/.319/.182 with no homers, eight RBI during his time in Triple-A. He might be able to find another organization, but it's unlikely he has fantasy value given his stats in the minors so far.

Fri Mar 31 202314:47Giants Sign Gary Sanchez
The San Francisco Giants have signed free-agent catcher Gary Sanchez to a minor-league deal. The 30-year-old didn't have much of a market this offseason, but he has finally found a home. Sanchez will report to the team's spring training complex in Arizona before joining a minor league affiliate. It's worth noting that his deal does include an opt-out if he's not promoted to the active roster by May 1. The Giants are already carrying three catchers in Joey Bart, Roberto Perez, and Blake Sabol. Possibly, the Giants are looking for extra depth or a designated hitter. Sanchez hit .205/.282/.377 with 16 homers and 61 RBI with the Minnesota Twins last season. It's hard to imagine him having much fantasy value this season.

Thu Feb 9 202318:40Gary Sanchez To Play In World Baseball Classic
Free-agent catcher Gary Sanchez remains unsigned after playing for the Minnesota Twins in 2022, but he will play for the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Sanchez should eventually latch on with a team before Opening Day, and competing in the WBC could be a nice way to showcase his skills if he plays well. The 30-year-old backstop hit just .205/.282/.377 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 128 games for Minnesota last year after spending the first seven years of his career with the New York Yankees. The two-time All-Star doesn't make a ton of consistent contact, but he does have nice power at the position and has improved defensively. Sanchez will probably share catching duties no matter where he ends up, but a move to a more hitter-friendly park could help him bounce back.

Wed Jan 11 202300:25Giants Showing Interest In Gary Sanchez
The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Tuesday that the San Francisco Giants are showing interest in free-agent catcher Gary Sanchez. The 30-year-old had another disappointing season at the plate with the Minnesota Twins, slashing .205/.282/.377 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 471 plate appearances in 2022. If he did join the Giants, Sanchez would bring solid defense behind the plate in tandem with Joey Bart, whose defensive skills are not as strong. Sanchez does provide some power at a weak fantasy position, but he hasn't offered much else over the past several seasons.

Thu Jun 9 202214:16Twins Avoid Arbitration With Gary Sanchez
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez agreed on a one-year, $9 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration, according to sources. Sanchez has been Minnesota's primary catcher in 2022 after being acquired from the New York Yankees in the offseason. He will never hit for a high average because of his swing-and-miss tendencies, but Sanchez has plenty of power at a weak fantasy position. In his first 44 games with the Twins, he's slashing .224/.282/.435 with seven home runs, 27 RBI, 16 runs scored and one stolen base in 177 plate appearances.

Sat Jun 4 202212:16Gary Sanchez Taking The Day Off
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Sanchez will get a day to rest after he went 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in his last three games to drop his season line to .225/.287/.430. The former Yankee has six home runs, 25 RBI, 14 runs scored and one stolen base in his first 41 games for the Twins this year. Ryan Jeffers is behind the plate and is batting eighth on Saturday, while Byron Buxton is serving as the designated hitter and batting second against Jays right-hander Jose Berrios. Buxton is a must-start anytime he's in the lineup, but Jeffers is a desperation DFS option at catcher, as he's batting just .178 (21-for-118) on the season with three homers and 14 RBI.

Wed May 25 202202:04Gary Sanchez Strikes Out Twice In Tuesday's Win
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez has been somewhat of a disappointment for fantasy managers who betted on the power potential on the draft day. Despite his unattractive .221/.286/.442 slash line, he has the most RBI among catchers in the league. He will continue to hit in the middle of the Twins lineup, at least for now. As long as he is a cleanup hitter with catcher eligibility, hes worth a spot on fantasy rosters.
Thu Apr 28 202211:24Gary Sanchez Sidelined Again Thursday
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez (abdomen) remains out of the starting lineup on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers. Sanchez will miss his seventh straight game while dealing with abdominal tightness. The 29-year-old backstop did some work on the field before Wednesday's game, though, so hopefully he'll be able to return this weekend. Ryan Jeffers is behind the plate again on Thursday and is hitting seventh against Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal. The 24-year-old isn't much of an offensive force, but he does have two home runs and four RBI in 47 plate appearances for the Twins to begin the season. Sanchez is off to a slow start in his first year in Minnesota, hitting .216 (8-for-37) with one homer and eight RBI in 10 games played.

Wed Apr 27 202216:13Gary Sanchez Out Again On Wednesday
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez (abdomen) will miss his sixth straight game on Wednesday when the team takes on Michael Pineda and the Detroit Tigers. Ryan Jeffers is getting his second straight start behind the plate for the game. Sanchez has been dealing with abdominal tightness for the past week. Over this past weekend, he received an MRI that showed "minimal signal," according to manager Rocco Baldelli. Overall, the team seems optimistic that he will be back soon and that a stint on the injured list won't be necessary, despite the fact he's been out for a full week now.

Sat Apr 23 202222:12MRI Reveals No Significant Injury For Gary Sanchez
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez (abdomen) underwent an MRI, which showed "minimal signal," per manager Rocco Baldelli. He's missed the last two games due to abdominal tightness. "We're going to give it a little bit of time, and he seems to be doing OK. He said there's some improvement going into today," said Baldelli.Ryan Jefferswould see an uptick in playing time until Sanchez returns. Sanchez remains day-to-day and should be stashed in two-catcher and deep-league formats.

Sat Apr 23 202213:10Gary Sanchez Remains Out On Saturday
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez (abdomen) is out of the starting lineup once again on Saturday for Game 2 of the team's series against the Chicago White Sox. This will be his second consecutive missed game due to abdominal tightness. Reese McGuire is making his second straight start at catcher for the game. There's no word yet as to the severity of Sanchez's injury, so we don't know if a stint on the injured list could be coming. For now, he should be considered day-to-day.

Sat Apr 23 202208:37Gary Sanchez Dealing With Abdominal Tightness
Minnesota Twins catcher Gary Sanchez (abdomen) was a late scratch from Friday's starting lineup due to abdominal tightness. According to Twins beat writer Betsy Helfand, Sanchez had an MRI on Friday. The team should have a better idea of what Sanchez is dealing with after the MRI results come in on Saturday. Reese McGuire got the start at catcher for Friday's game and he will continue to serve as the team's primary catcher if Sanchez misses additional time.

Sat Apr 16 202211:22Byron Buxton, Gary Sanchez Out Saturday
Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) and catcher Gary Sanchez are not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox. Buxton left the game on Friday due to right knee soreness and is undergoing further tests to rule out a significant injury. It doesn't seem like the 28-year-old's injury is that serious, but Buxton has proven to be extremely fragile in his career, so his fantasy managers should still be holding their breath. Nick Gordon is in center field and is hitting seventh on Saturday against Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck. Ryan Jeffers is doing the catching for Sanchez and is batting ninth. Sanchez has started six of the team's first seven games, so he was due for a day off.
