Hernandez was expected to come off the DL earlier this week and replenish the Pirates' outfield depth, but with the team adding a few players to the 25-man roster via trade, there was no longer any room for him. The 27-year-old will have to wait until injuries decimate the Pirates' outfield depth before he gets another turn with the big club.

Hernandez (shoulder) was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.

Hernandez hit the DL over the weekend with discomfort in his left shoulder, but it's certainly encouraging to see him embarking on a rehab assignment relatively quickly. He's eligible to come off the DL on Tuesday, and at this point it's unclear if he'll require more than the mandatory 15 days.

Hernandez (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to July 13.

Hernandez, a young defensive specialist, had seen just five at-bats at the Major League level so far this season. Even when he does return, it's difficult to imagine him making a major fantasy impact.

Hernandez went hitless in three at-bats Sunday against the Braves.

The outfielder offers stellar defensive skill but little in the way of offense. Hernandez got the start in part because Pittsburgh rested Gregory Polanco with a righthander on the mound. The Bucs are expected to face just one righty in Week 14, likely limiting Hernandez to pinch-running and defensive replacement opportunities.
